Obesity a Major Cause of Early Death in Women: Study (HealthDay)
TUESDAY, June 28 (HealthDay News) -- Obesity is a major risk factor for death among obese women who don't smoke, particularly low-income women, a new study finds.
It included more than 3,600 women aged 45 to 64 in Scotland who never smoked and were followed for 28 years. During that time, half the women died, including 916 (51 percent) from cardiovascular disease and 487 (27 percent) from cancer.
Researchers found that low-income women were more likely to be severely obese than women who were better off financially.
The study also found that those who were severely obese had the highest death rates, while non-smoking women who were not obese have relatively low death rates regardless of their socioeconomic status, according to the study, published June 28 online in the British Medical Journal.
Though women with low-income jobs were more likely than those with higher paying jobs to die of cardiovascular disease, the same didn't hold true for cancer.
Researchers also found that women who never smoked were much more likely to be overweight or obese than those who smoked. This suggests that high smoking rates a few decades ago may have obscured the extent of obesity in non-smoking women, and that recent declines in smoking rates may have contributed to the increase in overweight and obesity, the researchers said in a journal news release.
Despite the risks posed by obesity, "it is important not to forget that smoking is a much stronger risk factor for (death) than most other risk factors, including obesity," Professor Johan Mackenbach, of Erasmus Medical Center Rotterdam in the Netherlands, wrote in an accompanying editorial.

Budget and debt talks move to the White House (AP)
WASHINGTON ? Efforts to work out a deal for cutting government spending while at the same time raising the debt limit move into a new phase with President Barack Obama meeting at the White House with Senate leaders.
Obama is set to meet Monday morning with the Democratic leader, Sen. Harry Reid, and then in the afternoon with the Republican leader, Sen. Mitch McConnell.
Talks between congressional leaders of the House and the Senate reached an impasse last week over the question of federal revenue. Democrats say they want to close loopholes and scale back tax breaks for big corporations and wealthy taxpayers. Republicans want to focus on cutting spending and have waved off tax increases.
McConnell told ABC's "This Week" on Sunday that proposals seeking more tax revenue won't pass Congress.

Pakistan coalition partner quits government: party (AFP)
KARACHI (AFP) ? The Pakistan government's main coalition partner said Monday it had quit the beleaguered administration, citing the "dictatorial" and "brutal" approach of the ruling Pakistan People's Party.
The departure of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leaves the PPP with 207 seats in parliament and a slender majority.
"The MQM leadership and workers have reached the conclusion it is difficult to go along with the Pakistan People's Party, keeping in view its democratic and dictatorial attitude," senior party official Farooq Sattar told reporters.
"The PPP was unwilling to mend its ways leaving us with no option but to quit the coalition government," Sattar said, adding that MQM lawmakers in federal and provincial assemblies would sit on opposition benches.
A spokesman for the governor of the southern Sindh province, of which Karachi is the capital, confirmed the governor, also a Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) loyalist, had sent his resignation to the president.
"Governor Ishratul Ibad Khan has resigned from his post and sent the resignation to the president's house in Islamabad for approval," spokesman Syed Wajahat Ali told AFP.
Sattar accused the PPP of "forcing" the MQM to withdraw from elections in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
"When we refused to change our stance, the PPP got the elections for Kashmiri migrants residing in Karachi cancelled on the pretext of security issues," Sattar said.
"It is not possible for us to partner with the PPP any further because of its brutal, ruthless and disloyal character to its partners," said Sattar as hundreds of party workers loudly chanted party slogans.
"Our resignations are ready and will be sent soon to the authorities."
It is second time this year that the MQM has quit the government. In January it left only to rejoin the coalition in the space of a week, following a compromise by the PPP to save its government.
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani promised not to introduce a contentious general sales tax, which the United States and other donors had welcomed, on grounds that it would affect ordinary people more than the rich.
The Pakistan Muslim League (Quaid-e-Azam) has since joined the coalition, shoring up the PPP's position with its 52 MPs.
The PPP said it hoped to persuade its alienated ally to reverse its decision.
"The issues can be settled with dialogue. We'll go for dialogue again to keep our coalition as intact as ever," Sharjeel Memon, provincial information minister from the ruling Pakistan People's Party told AFP.
Political analysts said the MQM's departure from the coalition would strengthen the military establishment at the government's cost.
"This move is very serious to Pakistan's fragile democracy. It could lead to further political upheaval in Pakistan, disrupt the financial capital Karachi and strengthen the military establishment's grip on power," Tauseef Ahmed Khan, a professor at Federal Urdu University in Karachi, told AFP.
Pakistan is fighting Taliban militancy in its tribal badlands in the northwest. It has a weak economy, with a minimal growth rate and devalued rupee currency.
The International Monetary Fund has suspended a $11.3 billion stand-by arrangement arranged in 2008 to rescue Pakistan from bankruptcy amid a failure by the government to pursue a slew of economic reforms.
"Karachi is already plagued by political violence. Any further bickering would destabilise this financial engine and weaken the country's economy," economist A.B. Shahid said.
Karachi is riven by killings sparked by political and ethnic tensions as well as crime, but violence by Islamist militants is also rising in the city of 16 million people whose port is a hub for NATO supplies bound for Afghanistan.
Last month, it took the navy 17 hours to fight off a handful of militants who killed 10 security officials and destroyed two US-made aircraft at the only naval air base in Karachi.
In 2010, political violence in Karachi was dominated by flare-ups in August after an MQM lawmaker was shot dead and in October on the eve of the election for his successor.

Latex with not stick to oil base. when I tried I ended up with a peeling mess and had to strip and start over. I prefer latex. It goes on easier and is easier to clean up.

The country still mourns Grace, who died in a car crash nearly 30 years ago, but Monegasques are eagerly awaiting their new princess. Though 53-year-old Albert has been romantically linked to some of Europe's most eligible bachelorettes over the years, he long resisted marriage, and the upcoming wedding will be his first trip down the aisle.
It's to be a grand affair.
It will be held over not one but two days in the princely palace ? a fortress-turned-Italian Renaissance residence, where members of the ruling Grimaldi dynasty have lived since the 15th century. And the guest list reads like a who's who of Europe's rich and powerful. Several heads of state are expected, along with royals from Spain to Sweden, top names in the sporting and music worlds and the celebrated couturier to the stars, Chanel's Karl Lagerfeld.
A civil ceremony will be held on July 1 in the palace's throne room, the red silk damask-draped hall where Grace wed the late Prince Rainier 55 years ago. The religious ceremony will take place the following day in the palace's marble courtyard, before some 3,500 seated guests. Access to Monaco's old town will be limited during the event, but the principality's 7,600 citizens are to be allowed in to watch the ceremony on giant screens set up outside the palace.
World famous chef Alain Ducasse will be serving up a multi-course gala dinner for about 500 guests. Ducasse ? who holds an astonishing 19 Michelin stars ? hasn't revealed what exactly is on the menu but says it will be local and sustainable, with everything besides the Champagne and South African wines sourced from a six-mile (10-kilometer) radius from Monaco.
A fireworks display over the azure waters of Monaco Bay will cap the festivities, which were so long in coming many Monegasques feared they might never come to pass.
"We've been waiting impatiently for my lord's marriage for a very long time," said Carine Dick, who runs a souvenir shop near "le rocher," the giant rocky outcropping crowned by the palace. "We were getting kind of worried there, but in the end it's better to wait and find the right person than get it wrong."
The Grimaldis ? one of Europe's oldest dynasties ? have been beset by romantic scandals. Princess Caroline, the eldest of Grace and Rainier's three children, was divorced after an unhappy two-year marriage to French playboy Philippe Junot, and after her second husband was killed in a boating accident, remarried a German prince known for his explosive temper. Albert's younger sister, Princess Stephanie, has had three children out of wedlock, including two with her former bodyguard, and was also briefly married to a Portuguese circus acrobat.
Wittstock and Albert cut a dashing figure together, the balding prince looking dashing but affable in dark suits and glasses while his fiancee ? 20 year his junior ? exudes a relaxed, understated chic.
Wittstock was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, in 1978, but the family relocated to neighboring South Africa when she was 12. Her father, Michael, works as a sales manager while her mother, Lynette, is a retired swimming coach. Under her mother's tutelage, Wittstock rose to Olympic levels, swimming for South Africa in the summer games in Sydney in 2000.
That same year, she won the gold medal for backstroke at a meet in Monaco, where she caught the prince's eye. Albert ? himself an Olympic bobsledder ? has told interviewers it was Wittstock's athletic drive that attracted him to her, though her slim silhouette and shapely swimmer's arms and shoulders mustn't have hurt either.
Wittstock retired from swimming in 2007, after moving to Monaco to be closer to the prince. Locals say she's maintained a low profile.
"You see the prince all the time, just walking around, but you never see her," said Stive Osmont, a waiter at a restaurant near the palace. "It's understandable because she didn't have an official role for all those years. But now that she is going to be princess, we're really looking forward to getting to know her better."
Prince Albert Alexandre Louis Pierre, Marquis of Baux, is the second child ? and only son ? of Princess Grace and Prince Rainier, who ascended to the throne at the tender age of 26. Albert, on the other hand, was 47 when he became reigning prince in 2005, after his father's death.
Though he dated a string of famous beauties said to include U.S. actress Brooke Shields and supermodels Claudia Schiffer and Naomi Campbell, Albert's reluctance to tie the knot was known to have strained relations with his father and also sparked persistent rumors he was gay.
Albert repeatedly denied it, but the rumors were squelched only after the prince acknowledged fathering two children out of wedlock.
Jazmin Grace Grimaldi was born of a 1991 tryst with Tamara Rotolo, a California woman who had been vacationing in the Mediterranean, while Alexandre Coste was born in 2003 to a former flight attendant originally from the west African nation of Togo.
Still, as long as he remained single, the prince's acknowledgment of the two children did nothing to calm succession worries, as Monaco's constitution specifies that only "direct and legitimate" descendants can assume the throne. As the problem posed by Albert's bachelor status dragged on, the constitution was revised to allow Caroline to succeed him.
Albert and Wittstock have stressed their desire to have a family.
"I love children and have always wanted to have children of my own," said Wittstock in an interview with France's BFM television. "We'll see in the next couple of months or years."
With her steely blue eyes and shoulder-length platinum locks, Wittstock has more than a passing resemblance to Grace. Still, she struggled at first to match the late princess' legendary elegance, and some of her first public appearances with Albert were marred by fashion faux pas.
With the help of Giorgio Armani, Wittstock has blossomed over the years into the very picture of understated chic, in beige sheath dresses and sharp-lined gray pantsuits.
When her engagement was announced last June, there was little doubt the Italian couturier would design Wittstock's wedding dress. That also meant there has been none of the frenetic guessing games that surrounded the identity of the designer of Kate Middleton's wedding gown, kept under lock-down until the moment the now-Duchess of Cambridge stepped into Westminster Abbey.
Indeed, authorities here appear determined to avoid many of the excesses of the April 29 British royal wedding, which with an estimated 2 billion viewers may have been the most-watched event in history.
There'll be none of the commemorative kitsch that abounded at the British wedding, where everything from tea bags to toilet seat covers were emblazoned with the royal couple's broadly smiling faces. Souvenir shops in the principality will be selling only a handful of palace-approved memorabilia, including porcelain with the couple's names but no images, vendors have said.

NEW YORK ? Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. and AstraZeneca?s new diabetes pill will probably face increased scrutiny from regulators and doctors after two rivals were tied to cancer and heart risks.
The drug, dapagliflozin, works differently than Takeda Pharmaceutical?s Actos, linked to cancer last week, and GlaxoSmithKline?s Avandia, tied to heart risks in 2007. While those drugs adjust the hormone that regulates sugar, the new pill helps patients excrete sugar through their urine.
?Increasingly, people are on the lookout for problems with these drugs,? said Laurence Kennedy, chairman of Cleveland Clinic?s department of endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism, in a telephone interview. ?There will always be a market for finding newer and different ways to help control blood sugar, but the newest ways will be under increasing scrutiny.?
Some analysts say they won?t project sales for dapagliflozin because of the risks posed by Avandia and Actos. Even if approved after a regulatory panel next month, doctors say they will be slow in using the new drug until more is known about long-term safety. A one-year study reported last year found no cancer or heart risks. Two years of data will be reported Sunday at the American Diabetes Association meeting.
An estimated 25.8 million Americans have diabetes, mostly the Type 2 variety linked to being overweight and sedentary, according to the National Institutes of Health. The disease is caused by an inability to use insulin to break down blood sugar into energy and can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and kidney damage. Medicines are used to lower sugar levels.
The new drug is being developed jointly by New York-based Bristol-Myers and London-based AstraZeneca. The earlier trial showed it worked better than insulin plus a placebo, and that patients using it lost weight. This is particularly noteworthy because insulin drugs frequently trigger weight gain.
If approved, dapagliflozin would be the first in a new class of medications, called SGLT2-inhibitors. Similar drugs are also being developed by Johnson & Johnson, of New Brunswick, N.J., Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly and the German drugmaker Boehringer Ingelheim, Tokyo-based Astellas Pharma, Isis Pharmaceuticals Inc., based in Carlsbad, Calif., and Lexicon Pharmaceuticals, of The Woodlands, Texas.
The companies, analysts and investors will be closely watching the safety results and a panel of Food and Drug Administration advisers that is set to review dapagliflozin on July 19, said Les Funtleyder, a portfolio manager at Miller Tabak in New York, in a telephone interview.
Concerns about potential side effects of all diabetes medications leave analysts little room to assess the sales potential of dapagliflozin, he said.
?With these type of drugs, we don?t model until they?re approved because so much can go wrong,? Funtleyder said. ?We know it?s a new class in diabetes, which is often not well- controlled. The downside is people are nervous about possible infections and other side effects, and you have to take the good with the bad.?
Bristol-Myers referred comment to AstraZeneca. AstraZeneca?s spokeswoman Kirsten Evraire declined to comment.
In May, federal regulators restricted use of London-based Glaxo?s Avandia, ordering the drug to be pulled from pharmacy shelves and made available only through a special program. Sales of Avandia fell to $680 million last year from $1.8 billion in 2007 after a study that year showed a 43 percent increased risk of heart attacks among patients taking the medicine.
On June 15, a five-year analysis from a decade-long company-sponsored study of Takeda?s Actos showed an increased risk of bladder cancer. Actos is the world?s biggest-selling diabetes drug. The FDA had required the study under new guidelines for diabetes drug approvals.
Bristol-Myers?s and AstraZeneca?s Onglyza and Kombiglyze, a version of the drug combined with metformin, a standard treatment, generated $158 million last year. Those two drugs are projected to make $1.6 billion by 2017, according to estimates from Seamus Fernandez, an analyst for Leerink Swann.
Even after approval, ?we still have an obligation to conduct studies carefully and properly just to make sure nothing major has been missed? said Kennedy, of the Cleveland Clinic.
The number of Americans with diabetes is expected to rise to as many as 1 in 3 adults if trends continue, according to the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
This explosion in cases has spurred the development of at least nine classes of diabetes drugs, some oral and some injectable. Today there are more than 39 diabetes drugs on market, generating about $16.8 billion in U.S. sales in 2010, according to data from research firm IMS Health.
Only half of diabetes patients have their blood sugar under control, so there?s a need for new medications, said Martin Abrahamson, the chief medical officer of Joslin Diabetes Center, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School in Boston.
?Type 2 diabetes being a progressive disease, one drug, a single drug, is unlikely to be a control for glucose levels over many years,? Abrahamson said in a telephone interview. ?Usually you add more medications to achieve glucose targets.?
