Google's Gmail tops Yahoo, AOL in poll

Google?s email service is top-notch in the minds of Americans, beating out Yahoo and AOL as the best email provider on the block, according to a new poll.

A new survey conducted by Poll Position? which surveyed a random sample of 1,000 adult Americans over the phone ? found that consumers favor Google?s Gmail (23 percent) over Yahoo (20 percent) and AOL?s email service (12 percent). The margin of error was not given.

The remaining participants selected another email provider (20 percent) or said they had no opinion (25 percent). (Read: New Gmail: 8 Things You Need to Know)

Although AOL trailed the pack with 12 percent, the study found that it?s still a hit among Republicans and young consumers.

About 20 percent of Republicans selected AOL as their favorite email provider, compared with 5 percent of Democrats. Meanwhile, AOL?s e-mail service was rated best among 18- to 29-year-olds, with 32 percent picking it over Google (10 percent) and Yahoo (18 percent).

Republicans also selected Google (19 percent) over Yahoo?s service (16 percent). Google was the top choice for Democrats over Yahoo?s email service (25 percent).

Among independent voters, Google came in first (23 percent), followed by Yahoo (20 percent) and AOL (10 percent).
