An El Paso police investigation found that no crime was committed in connection with a comment criticizing members of the El Paso Independent School District board that had been posted on the El Paso Times website, a police spokesman said Friday.
Some EPISD trustees had filed a police report March 2 based on what they felt was a threat posted to a story on the Times website.
Sgt. Chris Mears said the case was investigated by the Police Department's Homeland Security unit, which deals with any potential acts of domestic or international terrorism.
"It has been determined the comment put on the El Paso Times website did not meet the elements of a crime," Mears said.
Several EPISD trustees filed a police report claiming they feared for their safety because of the online comment.
The comment, made by a user identified as Sue Lin, stated: "Just how much money is being wasted on this group of crimminals? We don't want them, the city doesn't want them, the agency that they work for, TEA, doesn't want them. They refuse to leave as long as there is a buck to be made off of the taxpayer. People of El Paso, we need to revisit our second amendment and rid ourselves of this parasitic group of people. This must be done not only, 'For the kids' but every hard working, minimum wage earning taxpayer in this city that these aristrocrats look down upon."
The Second Amendment is the right to bear arms.
Once made aware of the situation, the Times
took the comment off its website because it was inappropriate, and the comment's poster was blocked from being able to use the website's Facebook comment function.The EPISD board has been embroiled in controversy stemming from a districtwide cheating scheme to game the federal accountability system of standardized tests.
In connection to the scandal, former Superintendent Lorenzo Garc?a is serving a 3?-year federal prison sentence for carrying out the cheating scheme with at least six unindicted co-conspirators and for steering a $450,000 no-bid contract to a mistress.
Texas Education Agency Commissioner Michael Williams has a appointed a conservator and a five-member board of managers to replace the school board.
