Microsoft has revealed some details on how they are improving SkyDrive integration in Windows 8.1 update.
The app would get its own position along with My Computer in File Explorer. Microsoft of course has already indicated that users would be able to use it as their primary storage space for all types of content.
Another major update is that Windows 8.1 would not need to store all the data locally if you so desire. SkyDrive would download only the basic information required to make the files behave like they are stored locally. You would be able to search through them, you would be able to check their properties. Windows 8.1 would download the relevant meta data and thumbnails without actually downloading the entire file.
If this optimized mode is turned on, SkyDrive would automatically monitor which files are being used or would be used. For example, if you start running a slideshow of your images, it would download large thumbnails in the folder so that you can quickly go through them.
Users would of course get the ability to turn this feature completely off. They would also be able to select individual files and folders for offline storage. Overall, it looks like a solid update. The only problem is expensive storage and of course the reports of Microsoft suspending user accounts for storing data that infringes their terms of usage.
