Middle East tensions heightened as Syria shoots down Turkish military jet

By METRO WEB REPORTER - 23rd June, 2012

Syria has today confirmed it took the decision to bring down the warplane after it discovered it flying over its territory.

Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan promised his country will take all the necessary steps once the full facts of the incident have become apparent.

During the incident in question, an F4 fighter jet is believed to have veered into Syrian airspace before being shot down into the Mediterranean.

'An unidentified aerial target violated Syrian airspace, coming from the west at a very low altitude and at high speed over territorial waters,' a military spokesman is quoted by Syria's official news agency SANA as stating.

Syrian batteries opened fire on the aircraft and struck it when it was less than one kilometre from land.

Turkey and Syria share a long border that is plagued by refugees and rebel fighters and has long been the scene of ill feeling between the nations.

There was already plenty of tension between the two countries, with Turkey opting to take a tough line against the way Syria is dealing with an uprising against president Bashar al-Assad.
