Churches Minister to Kids Through Sports Camp

Some local kids learned
some smooth moves thanks to a free sports camp, but those skills weren't the
most important thing they took away. First Baptist, First Methodist, Ridgecrest
Baptist and the Boys and Girls Club teamed up with local coaches to offer
sports training backed with a powerful message.

The kids were entertained by nationally known basketball player, Robyn Slain. When Slain isn't providing entertainment for NBA half-time shows, she travels around the country sharing her faith at sports camps like the one held in Dothan. Slain said she wants the kids to see the importance of balance. "I show them they have to work hard, have the right attitude and always put God first in their life. We can have fun with sports, but we have to learn how to balance everything in life."

First United Methodist Director of Recreation, Ryan Deaton said sports is a way to teach life lessons, but the kids were able to see there is more to it than that. "Sports are fun and we have a good time, but we also want to teach them a lot about character, value and most importantly about Christ. He is hope for them in a world of a lot of negativity," continued Deaton.

Organizers said after seeing what all kids took away from the camp; they plan to continue offering it for years to come.
