Microsoft Unveils Touch-oriented Windows 8

Microsoft showed Thursday the next version of its Windows OS at a press event in Taipei, unveiling a completely new tile-based interface that it hopes will be better suited for the emerging world of tablet PCs.

Microsoft called it a "reimagining" of Windows that will run on all types of devices from small, touch-sensitive screens to traditional large-screen PCs, and be able to work either with a keyboard and mouse, or without.

It is intended partly to make Microsoft a contender in the emerging tablet PC market, where its current Windows 7 operating system has struggled to compete effectively with operating systems from Google, Apple and others. But the new interface is intended for use on all types of PCs.

Microsoft showed several prototype systems on stage running the software, including a tablet, a laptop and an all-in-one PC. The new interface is a significant departure from the traditional Windows desktop that Microsoft has relied on for decades.

The screens showed large, colored application icons that look in a way similar to those on Microsoft's new Windows Phone 7 OS. Tapping an icon with a finger launches the application and allows it to take up the entire screen, without the usual Windows menus, system tray and scroll bars around the edges of the screen.

"The application comes quickly to life as Windows fades to the background," said Michael Angiulo, corporate vice president of Windows planning, hardware and ecosystem, who demonstrated the new software here.

The interface can be controlled using swipe gestures on devices that have touch-screens. Within an application, users can swipe a finger in from the right of the screen to make menu items for that application appear, for example, or from the left to switch between open applications. The interfaces shown on several prototype devices seemed to run smoothly, and Angiulo was able to swipe quickly through applications and menus on the screen.

Microsoft also highlighted a new platform for software developers that will rely on HTML 5, Javascript and CSS to let them build Web-connected applications for Windows 8 and Internet Explorer 10.

Windows Explorer and the Windows desktop will continue to be available, Microsoft said, and the software will be compatible with all Windows 7 applications and peripherals, according to Microsoft.

Still, there will likely be much for developers to learn, and Microsoft announced a new conference for developers, called Build, that will take place in Anaheim in September, where they can learn about the new OS. "Space is limited and registration is open right now," Angiulo said.

Microsoft has also said that Windows 8 -- which it continued to refer to on Thursday as a "code name" -- will be able to run on ARM-based processors from the likes of Qualcomm and Texas Instruments, as well as on the x86 platform from Intel and AMD, as it does today. ARM chips are used in most of today's smartphones and tablets.

Angiulo showed some prototype ARM devices running Windows 8, and said ARM processors will not be limited to tablets. "ARM enables ultra-portable computers of all form factors," Angiulo said.

Microsoft designed Windows 8 to meet the needs of a changing computer landscape, Angiulo said.

"The trends we're facing have changed," he said. "Today we're facing trends around immersive Internet computing, ultra-portable devices, and of course touchscreens. Windows 8 is a reimagining of Windows for those trends today."

Several top executives from ARM, Qualcomm and other chip vendors joined Microsoft for its press event. It had also showed the new OS a few hours earlier in the U.S., at the Wall Street Journal's D9 conference.

There was a slight shadow hanging over the event, after a Wall Street Journal report on Wednesday that said Microsoft is insisting its biggest chip making partners each work exclusively with one PC maker to help get the first Windows tablets to market quickly.

Some Taiwanese PC makers have been excluded from the initial program, according to the Journal, and it quoted Acer President Jim Wong saying the PC industry "does not belong to Microsoft, and it does not belong to Intel."

However, Microsoft did show a prototype Windows 8 laptop Thursday from Quanta, the giant Taiwanese contract manufacturer, so it clearly is working with some big Taiwanese companies on the new software.

AdGrok Team Joins Twitter To Help With Revenue ? Except Founder/CEO Who Goes To Facebook

Yesterday, we reported that Twitter was close to acquiring AdGrok, the Y Combinator-backed keyword bidding platform. Today, the company has confirmed the move with a blog post, ?@AdGrok Is Going To @JoinTheFlock?. But as we noted in an update to our post yesterday, things are a little bit more complicated than they appear. You see, one of AdGrok?s founders and its CEO, Antonio Garcia-Martinez, is not joining Twitter and has instead taken a job at rival Facebook.

Both Garcia-Martinez?s Facebook and LinkedIn confirm that he has accepted a role as a product manager at Facebook this month (though we?re hearing he may have accepted the position in April). There, he?ll be working on the Facebook Ads team. In other words, yes, he?ll be competing (at least in some regard) with his former colleagues.

We?re hearing this split hasn?t exactly left both sides all warm and cuddly. The two other AdGrok founders, Matthew McEachen and Argyris Zymnis, will be joining Twitter. We?ve reached out to Twitter about the oddity and will update if we hear back. Garcia-Martinez posted our link yesterday to his own Facebook wall and when someone asked him what the deal was, he responded with ?It?s complicated?. Well played.

As for the rest of the AdGrok team, the post notes:

When Twitter approached us and asked if we?d be interested in working on their monetization platform, we realized that this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that we just couldn?t pass up. The fact that the Twitter team is both smart and user-focused only made our decision easier.

Meanwhile, AdGrok, the product, is shutting down. They will no longer be accepting new customers and will cease charging existing customers immediately. All services will be shut down June 30. Data can continue to be accessed through Google AdWords and Analytics.

Casey Anthony Trial: Brother Describes Casey's Confrontation with Their Mother

Casey Anthony Trial: Brother Describes Casey's Confrontation with Their Mother

Lee and Casey Anthony

AP; Landov

Lee Anthony took the stand Wednesday in his sister Casey's murder trial, and described a "combative" confrontation with her as well as details of his desperate search for Caylee and Casey during the month the 2-year-old was missing.

According to Lee, Casey Anthony kept insisting to her mother, Cindy, who testified Tuesday she didn't see her granddaughter for weeks, that Caylee was with her nanny, but was asleep and needn't be disturbed. Casey meanwhile was adept at avoiding him. "I went on myspace and Facebook to find where Casey might be. I texted her," Lee said. "[She wrote back] 'I'm busy. I'm out with my friends. I'm doing my own thing.' She hung up on me."

The next Lee saw Casey was at the family home on July 15, 2008, he testified. As he entered the house, he passed Casey's white Pontiac in the garage. He described the smell as "very potent, very strong."

Inside the house, Lee says he confronted a "combative" Casey. "I said I could go get Caylee," he testified to an attentive jury. "There was no excuse why anyone couldn't go get her. [But] she said she didn't want to disturb Caylee."

Casey watched Lee intently, trying to catch his eye as he stepped off the stand for a break. When he glanced at her, she smiled weakly. He did not smile back as he left the courtroom.

Casey, 25, is charged with seven counts in her daughter's death, including first-degree murder. She could face the death penalty if convicted.

"Those are called abs, not bones, love," Rimes snapped back.?

She added: "This is my body, and I can promise you I'm a healthy girl. I'm just lean. Thanks for your concern, but no need to be."

A Bumpy Ride For Business Financing | Small Business Talk

Based on how chaotic the commercial banking climate is currently, the situation described in this article is expected to prevail for a long (but unpredictable) period of time. In spite of the confusing and frustrating commercial loans environment, a prudent business financing strategy is likely to produce the most effective results that can be hoped for by small business owners. With working capital financing and business loans, commercial borrowers need to be prepared for a long and bumpy ride.

Misinformation and insufficient information will play a somewhat unpredictable role in achieving the desired outcome of business borrowers finding appropriate commercial finance solutions. The eventual success of commercial financing efforts will depend on an individualized and detailed assessment of the unique financial circumstances for a specific business, although it is appropriate to note that there are new and effective business loan options that will satisfactorily fill the commercial funding gap for many small business owners impacted by their current ineffective commercial bankers.

Anticipating the long and bumpy ride that lies ahead for even the most ordinary business financing request will be prudent and wise for small businesses. It has not been unusual for commercial borrowers to wait for one to two months before their bank finally declines to make a commercial loan that had appeared to be a mere formality when the lending process began, either because banks do not want to publicly admit that they are not presently making business loans or perhaps due to their somewhat secretive and changing guidelines for making such loans. Regardless of their prior description of ?normal? for working capital management and commercial financing options, many business owners have already discovered how much and how quickly this has changed.

A prevailing banking climate that is characterized by misinformation as well as insufficient information about current commercial finance options for small businesses provides sufficient rationale for describing the journey to business financing success as being both long and bumpy. After they have finally been informed by their current bank that needed business finance help is not forthcoming, because they simply do not have enough information to successfully complete their task, a small business owner might be unsuccessful in their attempt to find a new source of commercial funding in one typical scenario involving insufficient information. When a commercial banker misleads a prospective business borrower by advising the business owner that the bank will be able to help in providing an unsecured working capital loan when the banker has already been told by senior bank officials that such financing will not be provided except for specific established business clients, this is an increasingly frequent misinformation scenario. Most banks are in fact eliminating or reducing working capital financing to small businesses as indicated by one public report after another.

More successful results should be produced by realistic expectations of what lies ahead in business financing efforts. This article represents a sincere attempt to accurately portray the recent confusing and unpredictable state of commercial banking for small business owners, and this fulfills a primary purpose in describing current attempts to obtain small business loans as potentially being a long and bumpy ride.By: Stephen Bush
