How to Make Rainbow Pasta and Show Pride

How to Make Rainbow Pasta and Show Pride

This post originally ran 3/18/2013. We're re-running it in celebration of DOMA's demise, the overturning of Prop 8, and in solidarity with our LGBT brother and sisters. Plow through a couple of bowls of rainbow pasta today to be ready for whatever the SF Pride Parade throws at you.

It's been a brutal day at work, you're dead tired, and you realize it's your turn to make dinner for the kids. But rather than concede defeat (read: order take out), here's a simple pasta-based hack that takes practically zero effort and will keep your kids entertained so you can maybe enjoy a meal in peace for once.

You Should Do This If:

You aren't completely dead inside. Or if you have kids.

Moment of Satisfaction:

Freaking people out with your newly multicolored tongue.

Biggest Pain in the Ass:

Keeping your hands from looking like you've been in the kids' finger paints again.

Materials and Tools Required

  • 1 pound of pasta (TK was used here but any shape will work)
  • 5 colors of food coloring
  • 5 ziplock bags
  • 1 large pot
  • 1 colander
  • 1 pinch of salt

Difficulty and Cost

If you can cook pasta and place it in a plastic bag, you can do this.

Building It

First, fill the pot with water, add a pinch of salt, cover and place it over high heat. Wait until it comes to a full rolling boil before adding the pasta. Cook it for however long the box says it takes to reach al dente, then remove the pot from the heat, pour its contents into the colander, and immediately douse the pasta with cold water (this stops it from cooking any further)

As the pasta is cooking, take a moment to to put about twenty drops of each color food coloring into an individual bag and add two tablespoons of water.

Once the cooked pasta has been initially doused in cold water, transfer an equal portion into each bag. Close the zipper, give each bag a good shake to coat and let the pasta marinate for about five minutes.

After that, drop each bag of pasta back into the colander and give it a good rinse with cold water to remove any excess dye and lock in the absorbed tinting before transferring it back to the pot. Add a tablespoon of olive oil to keep the pasta from sticking if you like. Use a pair of serving tongs to toss the stands and serve. A small pat of butter and grated parmesan is always a hit with the kids.

Or, if you're lazy:

Eat your plain yellow pasta like a schmuck.

(AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State Kerry says "real progress" has been made on Mideast talks but more work is needed.

Kerry told reporters on Sunday that there have been "positive discussions" and "very important discussions" toward peace between the Israelis and Palestinians during the past few days.

Kerry, who has been shuttling between meetings with leaders of both sides, spoke after a two-hour meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Developers Are Lifting The Cloud, Not The Other Way Around

enterprise appsFor all the attention this week about the cloud, it’s evident that it is pretty much a distraction when considering what is really happening. Developers are lifting the cloud, not the other way around. The big guns of tech are aligning because they have to. It’s a defensive move to serve their existing customer base. It’s not lke the old kings are showing ?substantial revenue increases for new software licenses. But ?consolidating power to offer legacy technology does show that the cloud is anything you want to call it. In their new definition of the cloud, the IT-heavy enterprise gets a new version of that old-school database to run the software installed ten or 15 years ago. ?An operaitng systgem built for the desktop and client/server age can be recast as a cloud service. Older SaaS companies can work with former on-premise foes and happily proclaim that what worked for the past 14 years will be just fine for another two generations or more. Just like cowbell, there is never enough. But these moves to align CRM and operating systems with legacy databases are not about innovation. They are simply meant to keep the status quo and offer the bread and butter business that have earned them billions in revenue. The real innovation is in the new genre of databases, developer frameworks, ?social coding services and the APIs enriched with context through data analysis. It’s not to say the cloud lacks value. It has plenty of that. The cloud is really all about value. Prices continue to drop for compute and storage. On Joyent, a developer can now pay by the second. But look deep into the infrastructure and there are signs even there of the developer’s work. Hearing more about this idea of the software defined data center? It’s this concept that software, not metal switches, do the work with APIs connecting it all together. The APIs connect networks, data stores, all forms of clients and databases, etc. It’s the act of the network going to the app instead of the other way around. So all the machines and the pipes are getting abstracted and the developer, arguably, is driving that change. The smartphone is a server. As again illustrated by Joyent with Project Manta, the big storage and network machines are now becoming part of the operating system. Compute and storage are coming together and in-memory databases make

Graphic: In Focus: The Coal Lobby?s Fight for Survival

DEAR ABBY: My husband and I have been married for eight years. When we married, we both drank and smoked. My husband quit smoking five years ago, and I have continued to smoke off and on. If he catches me with a cigarette it becomes an argument, and it's either I quit or we're done!I love my husband, but I find it difficult to be honest about this. I don't see the big deal if I smoke a cigarette. ...

Different neuronal groups govern right-left alternation when walking

June 30, 2013 ? Scientists at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden have identified the neuronal circuits in the spinal cord of mice that control the ability to produce the alternating movements of the legs during walking. The study, published in the journal Nature, demonstrates that two genetically-defined groups of nerve cells are in control of limb alternation at different speeds of locomotion, and thus that the animals' gait is disturbed when these cell populations are missing.

Most land animals can walk or run by alternating their left and right legs in different coordinated patterns. Some animals, such as rabbits, move both leg pairs simultaneously to obtain a hopping motion. In the present study, the researchers Adolfo Talpalar and Julien Bouvier together with professor Ole Kiehn and colleagues, have studied the spinal networks that control these movement patterns in mice. By using advanced genetic methods that allow the elimination of discrete groups of neurons from the spinal cord, they were able to remove a type of neurons characterized by the expression of the gene Dbx1.

"It was classically thought that only one group of nerve cells controls left right alternation," says Ole Kiehn who leads the laboratory behind the study at the Department of Neuroscience. "It was then very interesting to find that there are actually two specific neuronal populations involved, and on top of that that they each control different aspect of the limb coordination."

Indeed, the researchers found that the gene Dbx1 is expressed in two different groups of nerve cells, one of which is inhibitory and one that is excitatory. The new study shows that the two cellular populations control different forms of the behaviour. Just like when we change gear to accelerate in a car, one part of the neuronal circuit controls the mouse's alternating gait at low speeds, while the other population is engaged when the animal moves faster. Accordingly, the study also show that when the two populations are removed altogether in the same animal, the mice were unable to alternate at all, and hopped like rabbits instead.

There are some animals, such as desert mice and kangaroos, which only hop. The researchers behind the study speculate that the locomotive pattern of these animals could be attributable to the lack of the Dbx1 controlled alternating system.

Teddy Williams camp brings NFL to East Texas

POSTED: Saturday, June 29, 2013 - 8:44pm

UPDATED: Saturday, June 29, 2013 - 8:46pm

Former John Tyler Lion Teddy Williams held his speed and quickness camp Saturday at All-Saints.

The free camp is a chance for area kids to learn athletic skills from NFL players.

Williams brought NFL stars from the Falcons, Browns,?Seahawks, Bears and Cowboys to help coach the camp.

The All-American sprinter from UTSA says he loves putting the event on for free, because he knows a lot of these kids could not afford to go to a pay camp.

Williams played two years for the Cowboys before being released after the 2012 camp.

He finished the season with the Colts, and will head to camp with the team in July.
