Cavendish laments GB strength as gold bid fails

Mark Cavendish said the very strength of the British road cycling team had counted against him as his bid for Olympic road race gold ended in failure on the streets of London on Saturday.

Several teams gave themselves a chance of victory by sending riders into the breakaways that lit up the 249.5 km race.

Britain, however, decided to keep all their men behind to stay fresh for eventually supporting Isle of Man sprinter Cavendish -- a tactic which forced them to take almost sole responsibility for the chase.

But after nearly 200 km of driving a hard pace at the front of the chasing peloton, Britain had little response when a 32-man break escaped inside the last 40 km and produced the winner in Alexandre Vinokourov.

"It just seems like the other teams are happy not to win as long as we don't win," said world champion Cavendish, who finished down the field in a lowly 29th place despite having Bradley Wiggins, fresh from becoming the first British winner of the Tour de France six days earlier, in his team.

"It's the story of our life in road cycling, it shows what a strong nation we are," he added

"You've got to take the positives from that and take it as a compliment, but it's bitterly disappointing, added 'Manx Missile' Cavendish, himself the winner of 23 Tour de France stages.

However, riders from rival nations said Britain had only themselves to blame for failing to deliver gold for Cavendish.

"They lost the race a little bit because they were so strong," Belgian contender Tom Boonen told AFP. "They were racing hard and acting like they didn't need any help."

Kazakhstan veteran Vinokourov said he knew Britain could not sustain their early pace.

"On the last lap I realised that Britain was not riding fast any more and that they were getting tired and that some people were trying to get away," said Vinokourov.

"I knew that there was a group up the road of about 10 riders with one minute advantage on me. So we just pulled out and we ended up in a group of about 35 riders."

Britain's David Millar said many nations had raced to make sure the hosts did not win.

"We lost out, but a lot of teams lost out by planning the race against us," said Millar, Britain's 'captain' on the road.

"But we expected that," the Scot added. "We can't complain because everyone knew what we were going to try and do, so it was their job to try and derail us. Which they did.

"All we needed was three fresh riders to come up but everyone was just exhausted and most of the guys had teammates up the road."

GUEST VIEWPOINT: Supreme Court's health care ruling benefits ...

The U.S. Supreme Court?s ruling upholding the Affordable Care Act marks a critical victory for women?s health, and for the health of all Americans.

Because of this landmark decision, millions of women and families will continue to have access to affordable, high-quality health care ? many of whom previously had inadequate coverage or no coverage at all.

At Planned Parenthood of Southwestern Oregon, we understand how this law will have an unprecedented effect on women?s health. The law guarantees women direct access to providers of obstetric and gynecological services without referrals, and ends discriminatory practices against women such as charging women higher premiums and denying coverage for ?pre-existing conditions.? And in just a few days, women will gain access to birth control without a co-payment, which will have a tremendous positive economic impact on already stretched family budgets.

Since August 2010, more than 45 million women have already received full coverage for preventive health screenings, including mammograms and Pap tests. Now, with this ruling, 17 million more women will have access to health insurance for the first time. And millions more young adults will be able to stay on their parents? health insurance plans, just like the 3.1 million young adults who have done so since September 2010.

In Oregon alone, 160,498 women of reproductive age will now gain coverage under the Affordable Care Act by 2014.

The increased access to preventive health care and family planning under the Affordable Care Act provides immeasurable economic value to women, families, and society. Unintended pregnancies are already costing U.S. taxpayers $11 billion a year. Every dollar invested in federal family planning saves taxpayers and families nearly $4.

Women realize that health and wellness are key to prosperity and independence. In times of economic uncertainty, it is more important than ever to stay healthy.

For women, birth control isn?t a political or social issue ? it?s basic health care and an economic concern. The money that women will save on birth control each year, up to $600 on average, is equal to five weeks of groceries for a family of four, nine tanks of gas in a minivan, or one semester of college textbooks.

Planned Parenthood health centers already provide basic health care to nearly 3 million patients every year, and to 26,500 in Southwestern Oregon alone. Because this landmark law has been upheld, we know we?ll be able to do even more for the communities we serve in the months and years ahead.

With our new Eugene-Springfield Regional Health and Education Center opening in September, we are expanding our leadership role in providing preventive health care to women, men and families here in Southwestern Oregon.

Cynthia Pappas is the CEO of Planned Parenthood of Southwestern Oregon (ppsworegon.org).

eToys Vets Launch Wonderville, A Platform For Early Childhood ...

Wonderville, an education-focused technology startup built by eToys vets from the dotcom era, is today making its public debut. You might, at first glance, think of the company as something like a ?Khan Academy? for the younger crowd, given that its goal is to augment a child?s education (K-8) with additional materials and teachings. But the?similarities?end there. Where Khan Academy focuses on delivering video tutorials to students, Wonderville sources third-party content from a number of places all over the web. This includes not only YouTube, but also Amazon and iTunes, among other things.

The company was founded in January 2011, and includes dotcom pioneers and advisors from?eToys, eBay, Discovery, Disney, Scholastic, Sesame Street, and Child Magazine. All three Wonderville co-founders, Mark Eastwood, David Lenz, and Lawrence Leach, worked together at eToys back in the day.

?

?We?re going to have 80%-90% coverage of what?s happening in the classroom already,? says Eastwood, detailing Wonderville?s ambitions. ?In addition to that, if you look at the core curriculum standards, one of the things we pride ourselves on is that, in the U.S., more and more focus is going towards reading, writing, math, and a little bit of science, and a lot of our stuff is really designed to augment the arts, civics, and geography,? he adds.

From iTunes, Wonderville pulls in mobile apps, ebooks and TV shows, and it uses these alongside the other sources, to build what it calls ?smart galleries.? Each gallery contains a collection of digital content based on what kids are actually learning about in school. For example, a gallery might contain apps, videos, quizzes, and ?fun facts,? related to Abraham Lincoln?or Amelia Earhart, for example.

?

But not all the content is dry and stuffy. There are also collections about things which kids are just curious about, like Bigfoot, Evel Knievel, or puppies, for example. And the content is carefully vetted by those on the team with backgrounds in education before inclusion, of course.

Currently, Wonderville has sourced 3,000 items from iTunes and 4,000 videos from YouTube for its smart galleries. It will also soon launch an ebook platform with content from 500 independent authors. Initially, everything on Wonderville be free. However, after ebooks arrive later this fall, the plan is to beginning charging for access to those titles. Pricing is expected around $5.99/month per child or $9.99/month for a family.

?

On Wonderville, parents will set up accounts for their children, and each of these are personalized around the child?s age and interests. As the kids begin to customize the system by decorating their virtual ?room,? their interests, as derived by their selections, will be later used to inform Wonderville about what kind of content will appeal to the child in future products.?For example, a girl who chooses to decorate her ?room? with soccer balls, won?t be shown the same ebook titles as a girl who chooses unicorns.

Further down the line, the company is planning to release a music subscription service as well (WKID radio), which will not just feature ?kids music,? but will offer a wide selection of songs, while also teaching the child about what they?re hearing through things like artists bios and descriptions.

Wonderville is currently bootstrapped through private investments from the founders, friends and family, and others. Currently an HTML5-only offering, the startup is now thinking about raising in order to begin development of native applications.

Daytrading, Stock Trading, Investing and Forex Trading ? Take ...

There are plenty of openings to be had with stock option daytrading it can be a good way to earn some additional money if you're following the right systems and trading suggestions. You may possibly have heard varied opinions about stock option day-trading that leave you questioning if it is a very good idea or not, and a few people will even tell you it's a bad form to get yourself concerned in. The largest factor to establish your success is whether you've got the right coaching and secrets to help your stock trades be lucrative. While others will make it obvious that securities dealing is the best way to make a return on your investments. Did you miss-read the market? Was there something that you did not check? Did you take the trade although it did not meet your trade factors? Or, was the trade set up valid, it just failed to work out? Is there something about your trading behaviour that must be addressed? Whatever it is, you've an occasion to understand something new, and that's valuable! Take rapid correcting action : Is it necessary to tweak your trade set-up? Is there a rule for private discipline required? Whatever you have learned, take fast action. Keep your head and perspective right : You have a choice about disposition. You can accept the loss as an unavoidable part of trading and be thankful you can learn a lot from it, or you can enter a negative, downward spiral of feeling bad, getting down on yourself, and making yourself feel far more sad. Follow the helpful steps released here and stay above all this.

This also gives you the chance to test the stocks pick programme first hand if you want. I also suggest a stocks pick programme which concentrates on penny shares. This is easy to do and does not cost any investing cash to estimate how well its picks do as you can simply get the programme, receive a few picks, then sight follow their performances in the market. These are less expensive stocks with a taste for going on really fast profit-making jumps because they're easier influenced and influenced with less market action. The troublesome part is finding these stocks and separating them from the rest which explains why some stocks pick programs were designed with the aim of only identifying these stocks, particularly. Actually the ?seasonal adjusting? factor is just the start! For instance, the information fails to incorporate a group called ?marginally attached to the work force?, and a subset of this group called ?discourage workers?.

Folks who fit into this class would include people who have searched for a job, who need a job, but who aren't ?actively looking for a job?. The governing body would prefer you to believe that these groups shouldn't be included in the unemployment information, because they are not actively trying to find work. Folk who are becoming so deterred that they have ( at least momentarily ) given up. There'll be moments when you believe there is a great chance to make a trade only to realise that you are heading towards a problem. You've got to look at the situation rigorously before deciding for the very next step. The key here is to think first prior to jumping straight in. As a stock trader, you don't need to ask the help of a broker. There are lots of traders who buy low and sell high in the day and can speedily make cash.

Is Your Business Online? Learn The Tips To Successful Internet ...

Make sure that the audience for your website are really people who are interested in your product. Your internet marketing strategies may drive traffic to your site, but turnover is more important than visitors. Find ways to convince the people who show up to buy your product, whether it?s advertising-driven articles or eBooks.

Make sure that you?ve included contact information on your web site and that it is displayed in a prominent place. You want to make it as easy as possible for your customers to get in touch with you. Give them a variety of means to do so, not just a contact form. Many people prefer to make a phone call or send an e-mail.

The quality of the writing on your website will directly affect your business, for it influences your credibility and professionalism. If there are confused or sloppy sentences, spelling and punctuation errors?these deflate the good expectations of the customer and make him wonder if your business is well run and dependable. Proofread everything you post on your site very carefully.

Offer a rebate or coupon to customers who refer new purchasers to your company. You can offer them a percentage of their original purchase price back, or a coupon towards a future purchase. If you have a monthly subscription you can even offer them a discount every month for each referral they bring in who buys a subscription themselves.

Include a link on each and every page of your site that would allow people to share any information they like with their friends via email or on social networking sites. Allowing users to do that is essentially advertising for no cost at all.

If you are going to use a video or a picture on your website, make sure you tag it properly. People using Google Images or a similar search engine will find your picture and end up on your website if they click on it. It works the same way with videos.

Make sure you understand your customer base before designing an Internet marketing strategy. Consider information such as your customer demographics as well as the reasons they may visit your site. If your customer base varies widely, segmented marketing plans may make more sense than a single strategy but you will not know this if you do not research first!

Ask others what they?re doing. Sometimes the competition isn?t direct competition. Ask anyone who is marketing on the internet how business is, what kinds of methods are working for them and what isn?t working. Many times they will share information because they realize that one day they?ll have a question too.

An important tip regarding Internet marketing is to make sure that you have video posted on your site, as well as other popular video sites. This is important because not only is this method of communication a lot more personal and revealing, but it will also maximize your marketing coverage.

Make all of your email messages personalized. This will help to ensure that the recipient reads them; they are less likely to open the email if it appears to be generic. Try putting the person?s name in the subject of the message. This tactic will immediately cause the person to pay attention and make them curious about what is inside.

In internet marketing, good advertising is essential. You need to know who you?re trying to sell to and you need to know how to get their attention. If you are selling weight-loss products, you should advertise on health forums. Likewise, if you?re selling a game or computer product, try to advertise on popular gaming sites. Advertisements in the wrong place are wasted money and potential.

If you sell product on your website, make sure you accept multiple forms of payment, like all credit cards, Paypal and even checks. Displaying the credit card and Paypal logos on your website has been shown to increase revenue, because a customer knows that the check out process is reliable and simple.

To network and improve the visibility of your brand, go to real-world internet marketing events. There are several such events every year, such as PubCon, where internet marketers can interact with their virtual colleagues and share ideas on how to make money. If you?re lucky, you can even find a business partner.

Maximize security for your online shopper. Leave them no doubt about the security of the personal information they give. Any doubt may cause them to abandon a purchase they have begun to make. Use a major, trusted company to facilitate your transactions. If it costs a little more, it is worth it.

Internet marketing is not only the most efficient and cost effective method for marketing your business, as print ads fade it will be absolutely necessary to engage it for your business to survive. If you apply the tips and familiarize yourself with the advice from this article, you will be poised to venture forward with your business in the world of internet marketing.

Netflix chosen by many, but liked by few, says study

2 hrs.

Despite being used by more than 80 percent of the respondents in a new Consumer Reports survey, Netflix video streaming service?doesn't seem to be very well-liked. Users mainly criticized its poor selection and did not see it as a viable option for replacing cable TV and movie rentals.

Over 15,000 people were surveyed by Consumer Reports for the study, and while it doesn't really bear out any new information, it does indicate that people understand the shortcomings of these services.

With Netflix, predictably, it's the selection. Who hasn't tried to find something to watch some night, only to spend it scrolling through endless early-2000s movies and obscure documentaries? One respondent noted that the latest movie he could find with George Clooney in it was 10 years old. Even for $8 a month, that's pretty shabby.

The larger take-away is that there still just?isn't a valid replacement for cable TV and movie rentals. You can go cheap with Netflix or Hulu Plus, but those are far from an all-access pass. You can pay per episode with Vudu or iTunes, but you may end up spending $30 just to watch a single season of a single show.?And independent movie rental places have a great selection and helpful staff, but no one wants to bet they'll be around in a couple years.

For now it seems people are satisfied to pay their money and get their cable, and then switch on the Roku or Apple TV when there's nothing good on. But given the amount of dissatisfaction with any given?part of this arrangement, be it cost, selection or convenience, the next few years may see more people than ever trying to cut the cord. Meanwhile, Netflix will take the abuse and somehow still maintain a stranglehold on its subscribers. Maybe it's Stockholm Syndrome.
