Two of Tom?s Black Book thoroughbreds, Aspen Nikita and Karoo, are among the overnight acceptors for Ballarat?s eighth race but I think the latter is the one to back.
Whereas Aspen Nikita is stepping up from maiden class having won at the tenth attempt, Karoo is coming off the back of consecutive runner-up finishes in handicaps.
Pat Carey?s four-year-old son of Helenus was second to Excluded over 1600 metres at Bendigo last month and second to another Robert Hickmott-trained runner, Weighted, over 1700m at Sale two weeks ago.
Both Excluded and Weighted have run well subsequently so Karoo?s form looks solid and his pedigree suggests he?ll enjoy today?s 2000m trip and the forecast wet ground.
Karoo is the only natural leader among the dozen entries and if the Ballarat track favours leaders, which it?s done at its recent meetings, he?ll take a lot of running down.
