WENATCHEE, Wash. (AP) - Firefighters battling large blazes in central Washington state are on alert today for possible dry lightning storms and erratic winds that could ignite new blazes or whip up existing ones.
The National Weather Service says isolated or scattered lightning storms are possible into the evening. A red flag warning for the region is in effect until early tomorrow.
Thousands of firefighters have been working to steer fires away from scattered hillside homes and entire communities. The fires are burning on 143 square miles of parched forest, brush and grass.
The Table Mountain fire is threatening to merge with another large blaze southwest of Wenatchee (weh-NA'-chee). A spokesman for the Wenatchee Complex Fire says firefighters are focusing today on the interfaces of those two fires.
