Are You Really Changing Your Financial Behaviors? Or Just Fixing ...

A lot of us like to think that we can get a fresh start with our finances. We know that something needs to be done, and it feels like we?re fixing things when a big, dramatic decision is made. However, the sweeping moves meant to ?fix? the situation often aren?t as fool-proof as we?d like them to be. Often, they just fix the symptoms of our money problems temporarily, rather than actually changing our behaviors.

If you want to find true financial success, you need to identify the actual causes of your money problems and then change your mindset and your behavior. Otherwise, the problem goes away for a short period of time, but you wind up back in trouble.

Is Bankruptcy Really a Fresh Start?

For some, bankruptcy represents a chance to start over again. You?re in a tough spot, but then you declare personal bankruptcy, and you have a chance to start without some of your debt. At the very least, in Chapter 13 bankruptcy, you have a payment plan you can deal with. You do end up with a rather large black mark on your credit history, but if you wait for seven to 10 years, the bankruptcy comes off your credit history, and you can start rebuilding your credit before then.

Unfortunately, declaring bankruptcy doesn?t solve the underlying causes of your financial problems. It suppresses the symptoms, but that doesn?t mean that you have changed. Indeed, Harvard University has looked into the effectiveness of bankruptcy. The Bankruptcy Data Project is a collection of papers and studies related to bankruptcy and other financial issues. For more than 20 years, the group has studied bankruptcy. Some of the information found through the project is interesting, including two points of data:

  1. 25% of those who who file for bankruptcy have trouble paying routine bills one year later.
  2. 33% of those who file for bankruptcy say that, one year after bankruptcy, their overall financial situation is similar to the position they were in when they filed.

That is a significant number of people whose fortunes aren?t changed much, in spite of a ?fresh start.? The key isn?t getting rid of debts in one fell swoop. Once the debts are cleared, if the financial and lifestyle habits?that led to the debts in the first place haven?t changed, it?s only a matter of time before you are back in trouble.

Balance Transfers and Debt Consolidation

Perhaps you don?t think bankruptcy is the answer. Instead, you might decide that you might benefit from reducing your overall interest rate, or consolidating your debt in one place. This can make sense. However, this, like bankruptcy, is an example of a large gesture meant to help you get rid of your debt quickly.

While balance transfers or debt consolidation can help you reduce your debt, they don?t solve the problem. Once again, without the change of heart ? and a fundamental change in your spending and saving behaviors ? you can end up back where you started. In fact, it?s possible to find yourself in even?more debt, worse off than you were before.

Using a balance transfer offer from a credit card issuer can help you reduce your interest rate to 0% for a period of time. This allows you to reduce your debt quickly, with a minimum amount of fuss. However, it also means that you have just opened a new credit card account. With some of your debt on the new card, an older card is ?freed up.? If you haven?t changed your habits, there is a very good chance that you will rack up new debt on the newly freed up card. Now you are in a deeper hole than you started.

The same thing can happen when you consolidate your debt. If you use a loan to consolidate your debt, then, once again, it seems as though you have more money available, with the other debts gone. If you have third-party consolidation, there is still a feeling that you have ?more room.? This is because your monthly payment is lower now. You have some breathing room. Unfortunately, without fundamental changes, you can easily let your spending get out of control again.

Make Small, Permanent Changes for Better Results

Instead of trying to ?solve? the problem all at once, make smaller, permanent changes. Identify triggers that lead to spending, and consider slowly paying down your debt, according to a plan that you work out. Sometimes, the big things can be superficial. You ease the situation for a time, but if you haven?t changed, there is no way to avoid the same problems later. It?s about better financial management and cultivating the financial basics, not some magic solution that ?fixes? your finances. Start out by making smaller changes in your life. Over time, you will replace bad money habits with good money habits, and you will truly be in a better place.

Phuket Diving: Gear and abilities part the waters | Phuket News

PHUKET: When was the last time something truly fresh hit the dive market? Yes, per annum we get niftier regulators, more swanky dive watches and new fin designs that we won?t resist at the least window-buying. But, when was the last time something was placed on the marketplace for recreational divers that actually parted the waters ? changed the way in which we considered diving?

In an activity it truly is becoming a growing number of relaxing and accessible to most of the people, those desirous to ?push the bounds? without doing the heavy lifting of tech-diving books, have found themselves at a loss.

Those people with full time, non-dive industry jobs still want that sense of discovery; to finish up inside the footnotes of a history book; or, a minimum of, to be greater than 50 minutes down on a dive trying.

This year PADI has finally gotten the ball rolling with the launch of 3 new specialty diving courses: recreational rebreathers, sidemounts and self-reliant diving.

But, this is not tech diving.

Kevin Black from Kiwidivers in Chalong, one among only four recreational rebreather dive instructors currently in Thailand, explained that PADI was bringing the ?Wow? factor back to scuba diving. The brand new certifications let recreational divers safely push the bounds of what they give thught to sports diving.

The only closed-circuit rebreather currently available at the recreational market is Poseidon?s MKVI. Here?s a kind of bits of drugs that guys piecing together their tech kits of their garage years ago would have dreamed of, and now it?s here, safe and in fact designed for sports divers.

Before sitting down with Kevin, my understanding of rebreathers was fairly simple ? they do not make bubbles.

Well, i used to ben?t wrong, but I was missing a bit little bit of the purpose too. Yes, they do not make bubbles because the air you breath out is cycled and scrubbed through a closed system, after which has pure oxygen from some of the two tanks within the kit automatically blended with the oxygen-depleted air, making it good for an additional breathe, time and time again. Sounds complicated, but i used to be assured that they were dummy proof ? so i would not have any issues.

However, by focusing only on not blowing bubbles and disturbing the fish, I missed the purpose. Rebreathers don?t just add a pair more minutes for your dive, as i presumed. They do not just double your dive time. They really can turn a one hour dive right into a three hour dive, Kevin explained.

That means, you?re the first to leap, after which after everyone has arise, had lunch, equipped and booked a second dive, you?re the last to return up ? and still do not have decompression time, unlike a tech-diver.

Recently PADI ran an event showcasing both the Poseidon recreational rebreather and sidemounts on Koh Phi Phi.

For the various 30 to 40 divers on Phi Phi who attended the development, this was their first time strapping a tank under each arm for the sidemount configuration and feeling the recent diving ?flow?. Sidemount configurations had been around for a very long time, first reportedly getting used in England for cave diving, and subsequently used around the world for cave diving and penetration dives.

The weightlessness and balance that sidemount divers gloat about is sufficient to make me subscribe to the course, simply to join the club. And the redundant gas supply and reduced returned strain are both advantages that i am waiting for.

Though the course is aimed toward recreational diving, it also provides a pleasant view of the tech-diving world. It is a little step that leaves you totally comfortable once you start shooting to your ultimate goals, from exploring cave systems to only feeling like you?re portion of the ecosystem after you hover above the corals and snap a stellar photo.

Different from the recreational rebreather course and the sidemount course, the PADI self-reliant course isn?t about becoming ok with new equipment; it?s about becoming happy with yourself.

PADI has, since time immemorial, preached (and maybe rightly so) that divers should never dive without a buddy. Though that philosophy has not changed, PADI is now willing to admit that it does happen, either intentionally or unintentionally. And let?s be honest: who is a dive instructor relying on in an emergency when they are taking two ?Discover Scuba? divers on their first dip into the big blue?

PADI?s position is clear in their released statement: ?Diving without a Dive Buddy, by choice, while not advocated, is something which PADI recognizes to be occasionally either necessary or preferred by some divers.?

This recognition is in many ways a new frontier for experienced recreational divers (100 plus dives is necessary to take the course). Those who have only been loosely following the buddy system, or ignoring it completely while taking photographs, spear fishing or lobster hunting, can come out of the closet.

Not only can they now stop hiding in some murky underground social circle, but they have the opportunity to be trained in ?self rescue?, to be tested in order that they can at least engage in a more risky activity in the safest possible way.

?One of the key things you learn is how to deal with running out of air when you don?t have a buddy to rely on. You also learn a lot about calculating just how much air you use in different circumstances, and how to plan dives around your estimated consumption,? Kevin explained to me.

Yes, I?m stoked about this and over the next several months plan on taking the chance to try these courses, log some stunning dives and shoot for the foot notes of somebody else?s history book.

This is a part one in every of a four-part series on PADI?s new specialty diving certifications.

Landscaping Ideas For New Home Construction Sites | Arty Apt

When purchasing plants for your yard, be sure you pick ones that are local to your area. This way, you know that your climate is not too harsh on the plants. Also, make sure you know what kind of care is involved for the plants that you choose to purchase.

A great way to spruce up your landscaping, is to add some attractive outdoor lighting. Small solar lamps up the driveway, or in planting areas can provide a lovely accent to your yard, or special plants and trees. They can be purchased inexpensively at your local home improvement store, and installed quite easily.

Prior to going out and purchasing what you need to do your landscaping, make a plan. By having an idea of what you should buy, and where it is going to go in your yard, you will avoid over purchasing supplies. In the long run, this will save you money, time and frustration.

When planning your yard, think about maintenance. If you do not have the time to trim your plants regularly, transfer them or put them inside for the winter, choose low-maintenance plants. If you have plenty of time to take care of your yard and really enjoy it, do not hesitate to select more delicate plants.

Many people put most of their landscaping efforts into their front yard. A front yard is noticed by more people, and it gives people their first impression of both the home, and the home?s owners. A well-designed front yard landscape will not only showcase your home, it can also enhance the physical appearance of your home. To find ways to improve the landscaping of your front lawn, peruse landscaping, and books to garner new ideas.

Beautiful landscape designs are those that take height and layering into consideration. By staggering plantings based on their probable stature when mature, it is possible to create a tableau that appears organic, rather than overly planned. This gives the appearance of a lush, natural garden instead of a formulaic grouping of predictable plants.

Whenever you are landscaping yourself, it is important to include things other than plant life in your landscape. Things like decorative stones, bird baths, and lighting can really enhance the look of your landscape. Make sure you don?t make your space too crowded, by adding to many extras.

Before you begin any landscaping project, set a budget and make a plan so that you do not get halfway through the project and run out of money. Landscaping is very labor-intensive and can be done without a contractor, but it is not free. So make a budget and have a plan so that you can finish the job you start.

The outside of your home is even more important for first impressions than the inside, so keeping it in good condition will ensure that you can sell it if you ever need to, that visitors won?t be scared away and family will actually want to come to visit. The simple ideas that you?ve read here will get you started on the way to a beautiful yard, as long as you get to work today.

To ensure the best quality landscape lighting in springfield mo be sure to be methodical and choose the right provider for you.

ZOMG: Text-speak and tweens: Notso gr8 4 riting skillz | Get Schooled

A new study in New Media & Society suggests that texting ? with its abbreviations and grammatical shortcuts ? undermines students? writing skills.

The ?Texting, Techspeak, and Tweens? study by S. Shyam Sundar, founding director of Penn State?s Media Effects Research Laboratory, and Drew P. Cingel, a doctoral student at Northwestern University, examined ?whether increased use of text messaging engender greater reliance on such ?textual adaptations? to the point of altering one?s sense of written grammar.?

The pair tested students in a Pennsylvania middle school. Their conclusion: ?Results show broad support for a general negative relationship between the use of tech-speak in text messages and scores on a grammar assessment, with implications for Social Cognitive Theory and Low-Road/High-Road Theory of Transfer of Learning.?

According to Education Week:

Moreover, the more often a student received text messages using tech-speak, the more likely he or she was to send messages using that language. There was no gender difference after accounting for the amount of texting each student did, though teenage girls have been found in other studies to send and receive nearly twice as many messages per month as boys do: 4,050 texts on average, compared with 2,539.

Mr. Cingel started the project after receiving texts from his young nieces ?that, for me, were incomprehensible,? he said in a statement. ?I had to call them and ask them, ?What are you trying to tell me???

While texting has caused consternation among educators and parents since the 1990s for distracted writing as well as driving, changing communication technology historically has changed the way people speak and write over time. That journalistic standard, the inverted pyramid structure (write the most important thing first, the second most important thing second, and so on) developed in the telegraph era, when reporters? stories often were cut off mid-transition. Similarly, the need to respond quickly and briefly in text messages?and the outright character limit in social media like Twitter?puts pressure on students to cut out any unnecessary sounds. In fact, some studies have found students who text frequently are better at spelling and identifying homophones, as they have to, to turn ?great? into ?gr8.?

?People get creative in terms of trying to express a lot. The economy of expression forces us to take shortcuts with our expression. We know people are texting in a hurry, they are on mobile devices, and so they are making these compromises,? Mr. Sundar said. ?It?s not surprising that grammar is taking a back seat in that context. What is worrisome is it somehow seems to transfer over to their offline grammar skills. They are not code-switching offline.?

In that way, students who use tech-speak differ from those who speak multiple languages; multilingual children have been found to switch back and forth easily among their languages in different contexts and may actually be more flexible in other ways of thinking. Tech-speak is similar enough to standard English that researchers believe it may bleed over into different contexts more easily.

?Ultimately it?s not seen as a different language, so they kind of get used to communicating English language this way, the more they try to generalize what they do in texting to the normal grammatical rules of writing,? Mr. Sundar said.
