Around Town: Nomination due dates | The Journal Record

Joan Gilmore

This is the time of year when major organizations seek nominations for awards to people who enhance our community, state or our lives. Don?t leave the nominating to someone else. Surely each of us knows someone who should be recognized.

The Oklahoma Arts Council sponsors the Governor?s Arts Awards each year to recognize individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the arts in Oklahoma. The deadline for the 2012 awards is Aug. 10 and presentation will be in the fall at a ceremony in the state Capitol. For details, visit www.arts.ok.gov/Our_Programs/Governors_Arts_Awards.html.

The Oklahoma Humanities Council seeks nominations of individuals or organizations that have made outstanding contributions to the humanities. The deadline for nominations is Sept. 1. Nominations must reflect projects that took place between July 1, 2011, and June 30, 2012. The awards banquet will be on March 28, 2013.

Governor?s Arts Awards are limited to current, full-time Oklahoma residents or organizations that work in or for the benefit of Oklahoma. Nomination forms are available from the Oklahoma Arts Council at (405) 521-6418 or Joel.Gavin@arts.ok.gov.

The categories are the Governor?s Arts Award, the Business in the Arts Award, Media in the Arts Award, Arts in Education Award, Community Service Award and the George Nigh Public Service in the Arts Award.

The Oklahoma Humanities Council awards also are in categories starting with the prestigious Oklahoma Humanities Award to honor the individual who?s contributed significantly to the understanding of the humanities in Oklahoma.

Other awards are the Public Humanities Award for outstanding public programming; Community Leadership Award for an institution or individual who creates or participates in a program promoting public understanding of the humanities; the Community Support Award to recognize a business, foundation or individual that?s contributed financial support to humanities programming in Oklahoma; and the Humanities in Education Award honoring a K-12 administrator, instructor, tribal education programmer for the humanities. The final award is the Outstanding Oklahoma Humanities Council Project, recognition of an outstanding humanities project made possible by an OHC program or grant.

Save the date

The annual Septemberfest, a free family-oriented day at the Governor?s Mansion and the Oklahoma History Center, will take place Sept. 8. The festival will offer mansion tours, sports activities, face painting, entertainment, a climbing wall and ? maybe ? cow milking. Can?t beat a deal like that.
