The mouths that roared: With Munoz hurt, Bisping vs. Sonnen now set for UFC on Fox 2

If you thought Chael Sonnen was being a little too polite in the lead up to his fight against Mark Munoz, problem solved. Munoz had to back out of the fight due to an injury and now the brash Sonnen will face one of MMA top heels in Michael Bisping on Jan. 28 on the UFC on Fox 2 card in Chicago.

Dana White confirmed the news minutes ago on Twitter.

You'll also notice White said Sonnen-Bisping is a UFC middleweight title contender fight. It's a huge break for Bisping, who was probably two wins away from getting a shot at Anderson Silva.

Silva is currently sidelined with shoulder issues. He may return during the summer, but last week suggested to Brazilian media sources that his absence may be extended into the fall.

Bisping has long been a target of fans and other fighters. Sonnen is a huge trash talker. The lead up to the fight could reach epic proportions.

(AP) ? Airbus took in a record number of orders for new commercial aircraft last year as strong demand for its revamped single-aisle plane helped it best U.S. rival Boeing Co. in the race for orders for the fourth year running.

The European jet maker said Tuesday that it took in 1,419 net new orders in 2011, worth $140 billion, well above Boeing's total of 805 aircraft. That topped the previous record of 1,413 net orders recorded by Boeing in 2007.

Airbus also delivered 534 aircraft last year, up from 510 a year earlier and keeping the title of world's biggest jet maker that it has held since 2003. Boeing delivered 477 aircraft in 2011.

For this year, Airbus targets around 570 jet deliveries, including about 30 of its A380 super jumbo, the world's largest commercial jet.

Louis Gallois, the CEO of Airbus parent company EADS, said 2011 revenue will be "nicely above" the euro45.8 billion recorded in 2010. EADS reports its 2011 earnings in early March.

Gallois is due to retire in May but the EADS executive declined to comment on his succession plans. He spoke more freely about the ongoing European financial crisis, saying that the credit downgrades of nine European countries including France by rating agency Standard & Poor's last week "is only making things more complex."

"We need stronger and faster European coordination to solve the crisis," Gallois said. He offered up Airbus and EADS as an example for European leaders to draw on. "We are more than a symbol of European integration. We are the part of Europe that works," Gallois said.

That comment will possibly strike some observers as ironic, given the group's history of Franco-German management tensions and the difficult development of its A380 super jumbo, which was delayed by years and massively over budget due to engineering problems between the group's French and German work forces.

Airbus' recent success has been based on its revamped single aisle jet the A320neo.

It's a modified version of the existing workhorse jet, the A320, with improved engines and modified wingtips to make it allegedly 15 percent more fuel-efficient than Boeing's 737.

The plane will only start delivering in 2015 but Airbus is using it now to cash in on airlines' need to reduce sky-high fuel costs and cut carbon dioxide emissions.

The jet maker took in 1,226 net orders for the A320neo in 2011, including a single order for 200 of the aircraft worth $18.5 billion from Malaysian budget airline AirAsia.

Airbus' top salesman John Leahy said that the jet maker expects total orders to fall to between 600 and 650 aircraft this year, including the A320neo, after Boeing responded with a new version of its best-selling 737 model with a new engine, which it calls the 737 max.

Southwest Airlines Co. will be the first recipient of Boeing's new plane, representing the biggest firm order in the company's history by number of planes ? 208 ? and by list-price value, at nearly $19 billion.

Leahy cautioned that competition from Boeing's revamped 737 could unseat Airbus from its leadership in the orders race this year. After a market share of new orders of 64 percent last year, "in 2012 we will be down around 50 percent or probably lower than that," Leahy told reporters at the company's annual New Year's news conference.

Airbus is by far the largest part of EADS, which also encompasses the Astrium satellite builder and Cassidian defence electronics contractor. Troubles in developing and launching new aircraft programs like the A350 wide-body long-range jet and the A400M military transporter have squeezed the group's profitability for years, but Gallois promised improving results starting this year.

"We will see significantly better profitability as soon as 2012," Gallois said, thanks to Airbus efforts to get its troubled programs back on track. Higher deliveries, stronger pricing and cost savings across all of EADS' divisions will also help lift the group's profitability, Gallois said.

PFT: 'We're a dangerous team,' Coughlin says

File photo of Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher in JacksonvilleReuters

The connection between new Rams coach Jeff Fisher, his agent Marvin Demoff, and Rams COO Kevin Demoff largely has been overlooked over the past two weeks.? We?ve pointed out the benefit to the Rams of having Kevin Demoff in position to trust the information he?s hearing from his father regarding the terms Fisher needed, and the terms the Dolphin were offering.? We?ve also observed that, in order for Kevin Demoff to escape scrutiny regarding the question of whether rolled over for his father and thus for Fisher, the Demoffs needed another team that would be offering similar bells and whistles to that which Fisher wanted.

Peter King of Sports Illustrated, who discloses that he?s also represented by Marvin Demoff (more NFL reporters and broadcasters should be willing to do the same regarding their own representation), writes in today?s Monday Morning Quarterback that King has heard in some circles an inference that ?the fix was in,? and that Marvin Demoff delivered Fisher to Demoff?s son.? King spoke with Fisher, who predictably but nevertheless credibly denied that he was steered to the Rams by Marvin Demoff, or by anyone.

?Under no circumstances at any time,? Fisher said.? ?I have 100 percent conviction on that.? This was my decision, and Marvin assisted me.? I was the one who decided.? No one pushed me anywhere.?

King also asked how the decision was made.? ?From day one, when I began this process after the season, I felt Miami and St. Louis were my best options,? Fisher said.? ?I did my research. I looked at every team that had an opening.? I looked at the personnel on each team, I looked at the owners, I looked at the cap situations, and I narrowed it to two.? Not Marvin.? Me.? Marvin didn?t push me.? I am convinced he was completely objective.?

Fisher?s response implies that more than two teams were chasing Fisher.? Still, when the time came to negotiate with the Rams, Fisher needed a second team in order to get the best deal possible from the Rams, without exposing Kevin Demoff to criticism for giving up too much to get his dad?s client.

King separately writes, contrary to reports from guys like Mike Silver of Yahoo! Sports and Adam Schefter of ESPN, that Fisher didn?t want final say over the roster in either St. Louis or Miami.? ?All he wanted was the ability to ? in the event he was categorically opposed to a decision being made by the general manager ? have a mechanism in place for a third party, like an owner, to decide which way the team would go,? says King.

Apparently, Fisher wants to avoid a situation in which another Vince Young is shoved down Fisher?s throat.? But here?s the thing.? If Fisher wants the owner to settle any tie between Fisher and the G.M., it won?t save him from having a player taken against Fisher?s wishes if the owner wants to take that player.

After all, it was the owner in Tennessee who wanted to take Vince Young.

In the end, the Demoff connection helped St. Louis get Fisher.? But everyone knew about the Demoff connection going in; in the end, the Dolphins should have been far more vigilant about ensuring that they weren?t being served like potato salad at a father-son picnic.

Pakistani court orders contempt notice against PM (AP)

ISLAMABAD ? Pakistan's Supreme Court ramped up the pressure on the nation's beleaguered government Monday, beginning contempt proceedings against the prime minister for failing to carry out its order to reopen a corruption case against the president.

The court ordered Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to appear on Thursday to explain his refusal to reopen the graft investigation, injecting fresh uncertainty into the political crisis threatening to engulf the country. If the court convicts Gilani of contempt, he could serve up to six months in prison and be disqualified from holding office.

The government already is locked in a bitter conflict with the army, and Monday's Supreme Court ruling boosted the sense the administration could fall, squeezed between the court and Pakistan's powerful generals. The government is also grappling with an ailing economy and a dangerous Taliban insurgency.

The escalating political crisis is a deep concern for the U.S., which is worried about instability in the nuclear-armed country and also needs the government's help with the war in neighboring Afghanistan.

"The Supreme Court and the government are in an open clash now, and it seems fairly obvious the court is unwilling to back off," said Cyril Almeida, a columnist for Dawn newspaper.

"Once the Supreme Court, the army and the political opposition agree the government needs to go sooner rather than later, it seems very difficult for the government to stay on," Almeida told The Associated Press.

Information Minister Firdous Ashiq Awan told reporters later in the day that the prime minister would appear before the court on Thursday as ordered.

The Supreme Court has ordered the government to ask Swiss authorities to reopen a corruption case against President Asif Ali Zardari that dates back to the 1990s and involves the jurisdiction of the Swiss courts. The government has refused, saying Zardari has immunity, and supporters say the court is pursuing a vendetta against the country's civilian leadership.

The government also is at odds with the army over an unsigned memo delivered to Washington last year offering the U.S. a raft of favorable security policies in exchange for its help in thwarting a supposed military coup.

The army was outraged by the memo and pushed the Supreme Court to open an inquiry into the scandal, against the government's wishes. Some observers believe the court's pressure on the graft case is being orchestrated by the military to put maximum strain on the government.

Pakistan has long been plagued by tension between the civilian government and the army, which has seized power in three coups since the country was founded in 1947. The government has given the generals control over foreign and security policy, but the civilian leadership and the top brass have never seen eye-to-eye since Zardari and Gilani took office in 2008.

The head of the Supreme Court, Mohammad Iftikhar Chaudhry, has also clashed with Zardari.

The court initiated contempt proceedings against Gilani on Monday after the government failed to respond to an order outlining a series of punitive options the judges could take if the government did not reopen the case against Zardari. Attorney General Maulvi Anwarul Haq told the court he had not received instructions from the country's leaders on how to respond to the order.

The government has vowed to see out its term, scheduled to end in 2013, and oversee elections ? something that has never happened in the country's history. But the crisis threatens to upend that, and some lawmakers in Zardari's party speculate that elections could be called earlier to try to ease tensions.

Gilani criticized the army last week for cooperating with the Supreme Court probe into the memo scandal. He has said the standoff is nothing less than a choice between "democracy and dictatorship." Gilani's comments followed a warning from the generals of possible "grievous consequences" ahead.

Zardari has been vulnerable to prosecution since 2009 when the Supreme Court struck down an amnesty granting him and other leading political figures immunity from past graft cases. The court deemed the amnesty, which was granted in 2008, unconstitutional.

The court has zeroed in on one corruption investigation taken up by the Swiss government against Zardari that was halted in 2008 when Pakistani prosecutors, acting on the amnesty, told Swiss authorities to drop the case.

Nicki Minaj, Foo Fighters to perform at Grammys (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Rapper Nicki Minaj will make her debut Grammy performance next month, joining Foo Fighters, Bruno Mars and country singer Jason Aldean on the list of artists who will take to the stage on the recording industry's biggest night.

Grammy organizers said on Thursday that Minaj, who has four Grammy nominations, will perform at the February 12 awards show, as well as country sensation Taylor Swift, and Kelly Clarkson.

But there was no official word on Thursday on whether Britain's Adele, whose album "21" was the biggest seller of 2011, will be singing at the Grammys following surgery on her vocal cords in November.

Adele, who has been on doctor-ordered vocal rest since November, was not among the first list of Grammy performers. But the 23 year-old "Someone Like You" singer was listed on Thursday as being down to sing at the BRIT music awards ceremony in London on February 21.

Rapper Kanye West, who leads this year's Grammys with seven nominations, is also yet to be confirmed as a performer at the live awards show in Los Angeles.

Organizers said additional performers and presenters will be announced in the coming weeks.

Video: Junior dos Santos tries surfing, falls on face

Despite being a devastating knockout artist in the cage, Junior dos Santos is a smiling, affable man outside of it. He, UFC lightweight Gray Maynard and Octagon Girl Arianny Celeste stopped by a surfing school in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as part of the run up to UFC 142 this weekend. They met with the students and even tried surfing.

If you're wondering what it looks like when a heavyweight champion surfs, here you go:

And yes, if the champ makes it to his feet on dry land, he will get applause. That's just how it goes. He gets extra credit for pulling off the Ron Santo-esque heel click.

November trade gap widens, biggest since June (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The trade deficit widened in November to its largest in five months, suggesting imports weighed on economic growth a bit more than expected during the fourth quarter.

The trade gap totaled $47.8 billion, exceeding analysts' forecast of a $45.0 billion deficit, Commerce Department data showed on Friday.

The government revised its initial estimate for October's trade deficit slightly lower to $43.3 billion.

The trade report "is important for fourth-quarter GDP and this data should bring those (growth) expectations down," said Jacob Oubina, an economist at RBC Capital markets in New York.

Imports rose 1.3 percent to $225.6 billion as Americans bought more industrial supplies from abroad and spent more on foreign oil. It was the biggest increase in imports since May, according to seasonally adjusted figures.

The average price for imported oil rose to $102.50 per barrel, up 3.7 percent from October, while the volume of oil imports also rose.

However, a separate report from the Labor Department showed a drop in oil prices during December pushed down overall import prices during that month, suggesting the trade gap could get some relief at the end of the year.

<^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Graphic for U.S. import/export prices: http://link.reuters.com/can95s

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^>

Also, November's data on imports gave some positive signals for the economy. Imports of capital goods, which are used in domestic workplaces, climbed to a record high.

U.S. financial markets showed little reaction to the trade data. Stock futures were weaker, while Treasury debt prices were up as traders focused on developments in Europe.

Trade perennially weighs on U.S. economic growth. A wider deficit shows that more goods and services bought by U.S. businesses and consumers were produced outside the country, subtracting from gross domestic product.

In November, exports fell 0.9 percent to $177.8 billion.

Earlier in his administration, President Barack Obama pledged to double U.S. exports within five years and on Friday he plans to ask Congress for authority to merge the agency that negotiates U.S. trade deals into the Commerce Department.

Just as higher imports might be a sign of increasing consumer demand within the country, the drop in exports might reflect the recent cooling in the global economy.

With the unemployment rate declining and factory output holding strong, U.S. economic growth likely accelerated in the fourth quarter even as the global economy grappled with Europe's debt crisis, which likely plunged the euro zone into recession at the end of last year.

The report also gave a hint of a modest improvement in the politically charged trade imbalances between the United States and China.

The trade deficit with China narrowed to $26.9 billion in November, with American exports to the Asian giant rising to $9.9 billion, according to figures that are not seasonally adjusted.

U.S. exports to China were the highest since December 2010, while imports fell.

Effort aims to accelerate pediatric cancer discoveries by sharing findings from the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital -- Washington University Pediatric Cancer Genome Project

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has launched a freely available website for published research results from the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Washington University Pediatric Cancer Genome Project (PCGP). The PCGP is the largest effort to date aimed at sequencing the entire genomes of both normal and cancer cells from pediatric cancer patients, comparing differences in the DNA to identify genetic mistakes that lead to childhood cancers.

Titled "Explore," the website is designed to expand access to high-quality genomic data related to pediatric cancers, accelerate discovery and hypothesis testing, and provide comprehensive visualizations of the data. Explore is also designed to make it easier for clinical and basic researchers to search published results from the PCGP.

Launched in January 2010 in collaboration with Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, the PCGP is focused on sequencing the entire genomes of both normal and cancer cells from 600 childhood cancer patients in the first three years, comparing differences in the DNA to identify genetics mistakes that lead to cancer. No one had sequenced a complete pediatric cancer genome prior to the PCGP, which has sequenced more than 250 sets to date. This work has already led to discoveries featured in two recent papers published in Nature reporting significant advances in understanding the genetic basis of an aggressive subtype of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), known as early T-cell precursor ALL or ETP-ALL, and in retinoblastoma.

"Explore allows researchers to access the genome project's unique, published data specific to pediatric cancers and to make discoveries of their own," said James Downing, M.D., deputy director and scientific director at St. Jude. "We want to be a catalyst for the field and accelerate progress with the research gleaned from the genome project."

Rich in visual features, Explore allows users to get an overview of the genome project's progress; access to specific diseases; summaries of current discoveries; links to associated publications; views of single-patient genome data to disease levels and more. An online workbench of sorts, Explore will also provide information on what other cancers are currently under investigation by the PCGP.

"The entire research community will now be able to mine this rich set of findings," said Clayton Naeve, Ph.D., chief information officer at St. Jude. "Access to the genome project's user-friendly data website is a step in that direction."

Mali could surprise at Nations Cup, says Ghana coach

By Zoran Milosavljevic

BELGRADE (Reuters) - Ghana coach Goran Stevanovic believes Ivory Coast, Senegal and dark horses Mali are the greatest threat to his team's chances of winning their first African Nations Cup since 1982.

Ghana are among the favourites for the Jan 21-Feb 12 tournament in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon but Serb Stevanovic, who took charge a year ago, said the failure of some of Africa's top teams to qualify meant the battle for the continental title was more competitive than ever.

"Defending champions Egypt, Nigeria, Cameroon and South Africa won't be there, meaning that the 16 teams which did reach the finals are very strong," Stevanovic told Belgrade's B92 television website (www.b92.net).

"In my humble opinion, Ivory Coast and Senegal should reach the last four and one of them will probably play in the final, while Mali are also a team to watch out for.

"The Malian style of play has the handwriting of their coach, former France midfielder Alain Giresse so these four teams are the cream of the crop," he said.

Ghana, who have won four titles, are in Group D alongside Botswana, Mali and Guinea. They start their campaign on January 24 against Botswana in Franceville.

Stevanovic, who steered Partizan Belgrade to a Serbian league title in 2010 after being the national team's assistant coach in the 2006 World Cup, relishes the pressure of delivering the trophy to the soccer-mad nation.

"It such an honour to work here because the passion for football in Africa is far greater than in Europe," he said. ? Continued...

Lean, Green Tablet Prototype Promises Mobile Computing for $100

If you're trying to get inexpensive computing devices to those in need, you (theoretically) couldn't go wrong with making that device a tablet. So thinks non-profit "One Laptop Per Child," an organization that strives to deliver rugged, cost-effective computers to children in developing nations. The group has jumped into the tablet space with a prototype tablet, on display at CES Unveiled Sunday.

Giffords will soon face decision about future (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The signals are strong. One year after being shot in the head, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is on a mission to return to the job she so clearly loved.

Her husband and people near the three-term congresswoman say she is highly motivated to recover from her injuries and get back to work in Washington, potentially using her inspirational story as a way to mend political differences in the nation's capital. She faces a May deadline to get on the November ballot, meaning she has a few months to decide her next step.

Her future will depend on a recovery that has progressed in remarkable fashion over the past year as she is now able to walk and talk. Her only interview occurred with ABC's Diane Sawyer nearly 10 months after the shooting and showed how far she has come, but also how far she has to go. At the time, she did not speak in complete sentences and repeated her words to make her point.

"No, better. Um, better, better," she said when asked about returning to Washington.

The day after the interview ran, her congressional office released an audio recording that showed she had made progress in her communication skills in the two weeks that had elapsed between the interview and its airing. She read from a script and an aide said it took multiple tries before she was comfortable with the result.

"I'm getting stronger. I'm getting better," Giffords said. "There is a lot to say. I will speak better."

Jared Lee Loughner, 23, who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, has pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from the mass shooting Jan. 8, 2011 outside a Tucson supermarket where Giffords was meeting with her constituents. He is being forcibly medicated at a federal prison facility in Missouri in an effort to make him mentally ready for trial.

Giffords returned to Tucson on Friday from Houston to attend ceremonies to mark Sunday's one-year anniversary of the shooting that killed six and injured her and 12 others.

Her first stop was her office, where she participated in an emotional ceremony to honor slain staffer Gabe Zimmerman. Her staff dedicated a life-size photo of Zimmerman and a memorial plaque that will greet visitors as they arrive. Her husband, Mark Kelly, posted a photo of the couple on a visit Saturday morning to a trailhead outside Tucson named in honor of Zimmerman.

Events will take place throughout Sunday in Tucson, and Giffords is expected to attend at least one.

Giffords has cast one vote since the shooting. She surprised colleagues in August by returning to Washington to vote for legislation raising the nation's debt ceiling. The debate leading up to the vote had been among the most bitter and partisan of the year. On other votes, she is recorded as not voting.

Giffords' staff consults with her when working on major initiatives, such as trying to fend off the Air Force's efforts to move the 612th Air and Space Operations Center out of Tucson. The staff also works on individual constituent requests, such as helping war veterans and their widows obtain benefits or in securing a Tucson woman's flight out of Egypt during demonstrations in early 2011. Aides say that Giffords now participates in teleconferences with members of her staff about once a week, though the call gets put off occasionally based on her schedule.

Giffords has captivated the nation as she recovers. Going into Christmas week, her office had 24,880 letters that had poured in from all over the world. Students from 428 schools mailed her a get-well card. Many well-wishers send her hand-made gifts, such as quilts, jewelry and paintings. People also send CDs with their favorite music and books with uplifting themes that they hope will cheer her up.

"Almost every day, we get more gifts" said Giffords' spokesman Mark Kimble. "People routinely come in, asking if she's here and if they can talk to her."

On Capitol Hill, colleagues have held several fundraisers on her potential campaign's behalf, raising more than $800,000 between Jan. 1 and Sept. 30, a number that will surely grow when a new quarterly report is filed later this month.

The lawmakers say they're optimistic that she'll come back, but are sensitive about getting ahead of Giffords.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Thursday that she called Kelly earlier in the day to emphasize that Democratic lawmakers were thinking of the congresswoman as the anniversary of the shooting approached.

"We look forward to welcoming her back, and hopefully that will be soon," Pelosi said.

Giffords speaks with Rep. Debbie Wasserman Shultz probably more than any other member of Congress. When asked about her colleague's return, the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee said Giffords was focused on her recovery for now.

"She's making a lot of progress. She's doing great," Wasserman Shultz said. "She still has a long way to go."

Giffords has until May 30 to file nominating signatures to have her name placed on the ballot for Arizona's 8th Congressional District. Kelly told Arizona Public Media that she won't wait until the last minute to make her decision, and he has suggested that she might wait until 2014 to mount her political comeback.

He said Giffords "is the exact same person" she was before the shooting and just has to learn how to communicate as well as she did before.

"She doesn't remember the day she was shot, but if you back up one day, her memory is as good as mine for anything we have done together over the last seven years that I have known her," he said.

That memory was on display near the White House in October when several current and former members of Congress attended Kelly's retirement ceremony from the Navy. As guests were introduced, Giffords turned and acknowledged them by waving or blowing a kiss. She even had an easier time than Vice President Joe Biden in pinning a medal onto Kelly, despite limited use of her right hand. The bullet went through the left side of her brain, which has affected her right side. She walks with a limp and it's difficult for her to use her right arm.

Giffords' district is a swing district with nearly equal percentages of Republican and Democratic voters. Potential Republican challengers are awaiting her decision before committing to the race. If she doesn't run, multiple candidates are expected to enter the fray. If she opts to run, there will be less enthusiasm on their part because they know Giffords would be a heavy favorite.

"It will be very difficult, but nothing is impossible," said Shane Wikfors, communications director for the Arizona Republican Party.

The difficulty of challenging Giffords transcends the issues. People are rooting for her regardless of political leanings, said Chuck Coughlin, a Republican strategist in Phoenix.

"She will forever have a very special place in all of Arizona's heart for the price she has paid for public service," Coughlin said.

Coughlin said that Giffords' ability to serve in Congress is a legitimate question that will have to be raised at some point in an election campaign by her opponent, but it won't be easy.

"They'll be booed out of the room initially for doing it," he said.

Coughlin said that voters over time will begin to examine for themselves her capacity to serve, and he believes that Giffords will have that same litmus test for herself. He spoke with Kelly in recent months and got the impression that Kelly viewed his wife's return to a meaningful public service role as helpful to her recovery.

"I think she'll be running for re-election as part of her recovery," Coughlin said.

C.J. Karamargin, who worked on Giffords staff as her spokesman until mid-August, said that every time he sees her, he notices distinct improvement. Based on his interaction with her, he believes she understands everything that is going on around her. She just has trouble articulating her thoughts. Around Labor Day, he teased her about how he had heard she was enjoying Houston, where she is undergoing therapy at TIRR Memorial Hermann Hospital.

"She rolled her eyes and shook her head faster than a snap of the finger and said, `no, no, no,'" Karamargin said.

Karamargin said that if Giffords returns, which he believes she will, she could play an important role in helping lawmakers bridge their differences on key issues.

"If Gabby gets back to Congress, I think she will bring with her this sense of, `We can rise above this. I did it. We can do it.'"

Apple iPhone 5 Rumors Gaining Credibility in 2012

The Apple iPhone 5, when it does come, is expected to lead the company's product line for 2012. However, the road ahead for the device may not be as smooth as its developers would like. The Cupertino-based company's primary competitor - Samsung - is lurking around, waiting to push out a variety of devices aimed at curbing the growth of the iPhone 5, increase competition levels and basically start a last-man-standing battle.

As smartphones begin to assume greater importance in the daily routines of the world's growing population, the iPhone 5 could prove to be a pivotal point in deciding what technology catches the masses' attention, by blending software precision and consumer satisfaction.

However, it is important to note that any discussion on the release of the iPhone 5 must consider the growing popularity of the iPhone 4S and the fact that several users are still coming to grips with their present handsets and its new features.

Nevertheless, the mystery surrounding the iPhone 5 and associated rumors constitute the most sought-after information, especially among feature-hungry fans with smartphones that offer only basic specifications. The point is that as futuristic processors, 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology network expansions and cloud-based usage become increasingly in demand - with the vision of a high-tech future in everybody's eyes - the iPhone 5 could hold the answer to Apple's ever-increasing network of applications.

Like us on Facebook

As predicted by Jefferies analyst Peter Misek, Apple is looking to merge the iOS (iPhone/iPad) and the OS X (Macintosh) into a single platform for apps and cloud services; the process is expected to start sometime in 2012-13 and finish by 2016. It is hoped this will help the iPhone 5 (and future iterations) to become a mobile device that offers a vast blended eco-system containing the entirety of Apple's software and hardware product range.

Meanwhile, as we wait for more confirmed news about the iPhone 5, here is a look at a fresh batch of rumors...

Quad-Core A6 Processor:

The Apple A5 chipset, released in 2011, was injected first into the iPad 2 and later made its way to the iPhone 4S. The company's newest processor - the quad-core A6 - could be launched in a similar vein.

The A6 is expected to power the next iterations of the iPad and the iPhone (3 and 5, respectively). However, there have been doubts expressed over the readiness of the processor before June. This means the chip is unlikely to see the light of day before the fall of this year, i.e. could be seen at the same time the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S were launched last year.

Incidentally, an earlier DigiTimes report suggested that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. have quietly secured a contract to cover the manufacture of the A5's successor - the quad-core A6 - as well as its successors. An equally interesting piece of information is that some enterprising developers have uncovered a beta code in iOS 5.1 that suggests quad-core processors are on the cards, for both the iPhones and the iPads.

1GB RAM:
If the iPhone 5 is to offer a powerful quad-core processor, full voice functionality for Siri and a range of new features, software and updates, Apple simply has to consider upgrading the amount of RAM available.

The present iPhone 4S has 512MB of RAM and the iPhone 5 is expected to come with a full gigabyte (1GB) of RAM. Essentially, RAM is one of the quickest and most efficient ways with which to boost performance and cover the speed gap. Increased amounts of RAM help in smoother multitasking, faster Internet surfing, spectacular gaming capabilities and enhanced multimedia presentations.

Design Change:

The iPad 2 has considerably more aesthetic appeal, compared to the first generation of Apple's tablets, sporting, as they do, an aluminum coating that has now become an Apple standard.

According to a BGR report, the iPhone 5 is not only expected to feature the aluminum back but also be surrounded by a plastic or rubberized bezel. The report speculates that one purpose of this feature could be to cover a re-designed antenna system that surrounds the device, allowing Apple to build the rear case out of aluminum and without having to use a large plastic insert, as they do with the iPad 2. In addition, the iPhone 5 is also expected to be thinner, longer and wider than the previous iPhones.

Bigger display:
The iPhone 5 will most probably boast an innovative display technology based on adjoining and round pixels. If Apple is indeed planning to adopt an edge-to-edge curved 4-inch display, there is one - Toshiba's 4-inch (1280 by 720 pixels) HD display, with a density of 367 ppi (incidentally, this is a similar ratio to the one found in Apple's Retina display of 960 by 640 pixels at 326 ppi) is already available in the market, as the company demonstrated in May last year.

Meanwhile, the newest Samsung smartphone - the Galaxy Nexus - has no physical "Home" button; a development received with rave reviews and a decision that has made the phone more appealing to users and one of the best, if not the best, smartphones in the market today.

This leads one to consider the possibility that part of Apple's radical re-design of physical elements could include the replacement of a physical "Home" button with gesture-based commands a possibility.

Thunderbolt:
The three new patent applications from Apple, as published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) detailed Apple's revolutionary I/O technology, called Thunderbolt. The most interesting part is the possibility of Thunderbolt being used in iOS devices.

The Cupertino-based tech giant has detailed the possibility of establishing a connection between mobile devices, in one of the three applications.

The company, in its secondary patent application, stated "a connection may be provided between a portable media player and a display; a computer and a portable media player; or between other types of devices."

However, for this to happen, Apple will have to re-engineer the connector to be flat enough to fit a USB-type device slot. The good news is not only has Apple already been at work in that department but the speeds of data transfer and recharging, under that technology, will be lightning fast.

Furthermore, since the iPhone 5 features the iOS operating system, the handset will have the privilege of a Thunderbolt port... and, by the way, this connection should enable data transfer speeds of up to 10GB per second!

4G LTE chipset:
"The first generation of LTE chipsets force a lot of design compromises with the handset and some of those we are just not willing to make," said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple's Chief Financial Officer (CFO), in an earlier interview.

However, with 4G network expansions and the concurrent development of smaller 4G LTE chips and radical design changes for the iPhone 5, it could be that Apple may embed the LTE chip in their new product, keeping power consumption problems in mind.

After Iowa, Romney now hopes to pull away in NH (AP)

MANCHESTER, N.H. ? Mitt Romney eagerly pocketed an endorsement from two-time New Hampshire primary winner John McCain on Wednesday and bid to convert a single-digit victory in Iowa into a Republican presidential campaign juggernaut. Unimpressed, Newt Gingrich ridiculed the former Massachusetts governor as a liberal turned moderate now masquerading as a conservative.

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum sought to rally conservatives to his side after coming achingly close to victory in Iowa, saying he "hoped to surprise a few people just like we did" in the campaign's first contest.

"This is a wide-open race still," added former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, who skipped the Iowa caucuses in hopes of making his mark in next Tuesday's first-in-the-nation primary.

Romney is the odds-on favorite to win the New Hampshire primary, though, and it is unclear how much campaign cash any of his rivals has available to try to slow or even stop his momentum. Additionally, in a measure of his establishment support, the former governor announced he would campaign with South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley on Thursday, as he was joined by McCain in New Hampshire.

"The time has arrived for Republicans to choose a presidential nominee, a new standard bearer who has the ability and determination to defeat President Obama," said McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential nominee, and a man with a demonstrated appeal to the state's independent voters.

Already, the Republican field of challengers was dwindling.

Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann ended her campaign after a dreary 5 percent showing in Iowa, the state where she was born.

After suggesting he, too, might withdraw, Texas Gov. Rick Perry decided otherwise. "Here we come, South Carolina!!!" he tweeted. That primary is Jan. 21, and will mark the first balloting in the South as well as in a state that is part of the Republican Party's conservative, political base nationally.

Iowa, for months ground zero in the Republican race, yielded an almost impossibly close finish.

Romney emerged with an eight-vote victory over Santorum, whose grass-roots campaigning produced a late surge that fell just shy of victory. Texas Rep. Ron Paul finished third, followed by Gingrich, Perry and Bachmann.

A survey of Iowa caucus-goers highlighted the internal divisions in the GOP as it sets out to find a challenger for President Barack Obama in the general election campaign.

Romney, who campaigned as the man best positioned to defeat Obama, was the favorite by far among caucus-goers who said that goal was their priority. Paul was preferred by those who said what mattered most was backing a true conservative. Santorum ran particularly well among those who said they were looking for a candidate with strong moral character.

Paul outpolled his rivals among younger voters and gained an estimated 48 percent share of self-identified independents, a group that traditionally plays a major role in determining the outcome of New Hampshire's primary.

"If you look to bringing new people in, the frustrated young people that Obama had, you have to look at my campaign. I mean that's where the enthusiasm is," he said.

McCain and Romney clashed sharply as rivals in 2008 before reconciling for the fall campaign.

The Arizona senator did well among younger and independent voters in his two New Hampshire primary campaigns. Now, in a supporting role, he said, "Our message to President Obama is, you can run but you can't hide from your record."

Romney was more scathing. Paraphrasing the president, he recalled, "He said, `If I can't turn this economy around in three years, I'll be looking at a one-term proposition.'

"Well, I'm here to collect," he added.

Before leaving Iowa, Romney made the round of early morning interview programs, sounding at times more like an analyst of a race than a competitor.

"I think there's a real boost coming out of Iowa, not just for me but also of course for Rick Santorum and Ron Paul," he said.

At the same time, he brushed aside suggestions that his share of the vote in Iowa, less than 25 percent, was a sign of weakness.

"Ronald Reagan got 29 percent of the votes here and ultimately he was able to become our nominee," said, referring to the 1980 campaign that put Republicans in the White House.

He had a stiffer response to Gingrich, who refused to extend congratulations in the wake of the Iowa outcome.

"I'm sure he's disappointed in the results last night. But I expect he'll go on and mount a spirited campaign," he said.

Spirited might be an understatement, given the sharp escalation in rhetoric from the former House speaker in the final hours in Iowa. His campaign purchased a full-page advertisement in the Union Leader, New Hampshire's largest newspaper, calling Romney a Massachusetts moderate.

Talking with reporters in Concord, N.H., Gingrich described himself as a "conservative leader for the last generation," and depicted Romney as something entirely different.

"In that same time period, Gov. Romney was first an independent, then repudiated Reagan-Bush, then voted for Paul Tsongas, the most liberal candidate in the `93 campaign, then ran to the left of Teddy Kennedy and then became a moderate to run for governor in Massachusetts in 2002."

Gingrich accused his rival of including state-funded abortions in the health care legislation he signed into law in Massachusetts and said he had "specifically designated Planned Parenthood as a part of Romney care, appointed liberal judges to placate Democrats and raised taxes on business..."

"I suspect it's going to be a very lively campaign," he added.

Gingrich was briefly the leader in opinion polls in Iowa, before his support eroded under the weight of attack ads by a super PAC run by Romney's allies. Short of funds, the former speaker was unable to respond in kind, and declared he would run only a positive campaign.

Having jettisoned that approach, it is unclear how much money his campaign has left after Iowa, and how willing a separate super PAC set up to support him is to spend.

Personally, Romney was able to remain largely above the fray in Iowa's ad wars, generally running positive commercials while his allies took on Gingrich and other rivals.

Except for appearing at debates, Perry is not expected to compete in New Hampshire, saving his energy and cash for South Carolina.

In bowing out, Bachmann bestowed no endorsement. Nor did she say if she intended to seek re-election to the House from Minnesota.
