Dick Van Dyke shared his own talents with viewers of such shows as "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and movies like "Mary Poppins." Now it's his grandson, Wes, son of Dick's son Barry, who's out in the public eye -- and his grandfather is loyally supporting him.

Dick Van Dyke, 87, came to support Wes Van Dyke's display of paintings this weekend at the Malibu Arts Fest in Malibu, Calif. Wes Van Dyke, 28, creates and sells oil paintings, mainly of scenic landscapes. Another famous face, actor Pierce Brosnan, also came by the show.

"I feel like Justin Bieber," the elder Van Dyke joked, as fans flocked to take his photograph. On Monday, he tweeted, "Great turnout for my grandson's art show this weekend."

According to his website, Wes Van Dyke still paints using the easel given him by his grandparents when he was a teenager. He notes on his site that his grandparents and family have "supported and encouraged him from the beginning." His paintings take an average of 40 hours to complete.

Wes' father, Barry, is Dick Van Dyke's second son, and played the son to his father's character on "Diagnosis: Murder" in the 1990s.

Dick Van Dyke received the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award in January. In May, he revealed that he was suffering from excruciatingly painful headaches, which he later attributed to his titanium dental implants.

'Housewives' stars free on bond, travel restricted

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ? A star of "The Real Housewives of New Jersey" and her husband were each released on $500,000 bond after making initial court appearances Tuesday on federal fraud charges.

Teresa Giudice and her husband, Giuseppe "Joe" Giudice, were ordered to surrender their passports and restrict their travels to New Jersey and New York. Joe Giudice, an Italian citizen, could be deported if convicted.

The Giudices, who rose to celebrity status by showcasing their lavish lifestyle on the Bravo reality TV show, were indicted Monday on bank and bankruptcy fraud charges, among other counts.

Joe Giudice is also charged with failing to file tax returns from 2004 to 2008, when he is alleged to have earned nearly $1 million.

The couple is accused of exaggerating their income while applying for loans before their show debuted in 2009, then hiding their fortunes in a bankruptcy filing after their first season aired.

The couple did not enter pleas during the brief appearance in a courtroom packed with media and spectators. Their arraignment was set for Aug. 14. Their attorneys said both will plead not guilty.

"The investigation went on for a pretty long time and we are confident we have enough evidence to convict the defendants beyond a reasonable doubt," U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman said after the proceeding.

Both face hundreds of years in prison and millions of dollars in fines if convicted, but federal sentencing guidelines would greatly reduce the penalties, Fishman said.

Teresa Giudice's attorney, Henry Klingeman, said he believes the government is prosecuting the couple because of their celebrity.

The couple filed for bankruptcy in 2009, claiming they owed $11 million, including $2.2 million in mortgages, $13,000 to Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom, and nearly $12,000 to a fertility clinic.

Joe Giudice also is facing charges in Passaic County that he used his brother's identity to obtain a driver's license, presenting his marriage and birth certificates. He rejected a plea deal in April through his lawyer, Miles Feinstein.

"In Passaic County, where I represent him, I feel that because of his celebrity status he's being treated differently than others are for the same offense," said Feinstein, who did not comment on the federal case.

Teresa Giudice has parlayed her fame into cookbooks, a line of ready-made bellinis and "Skinny Italian," a specialty food line.

On the show, she is known for her expensive tastes and combative relationship with her brother and sister-in-law. But Klingeman noted that the show helps support the couple and their four children.

"While it's called reality TV," Klingeman said, "I'm not sure everything you see on the show is real."

Another day , another group of Sports fans airing their virulent anti-Semitism on Twitter ? Last time, anti-Semitic baseball fans gleefully reacted to the news of Ryan Braun?s PED suspension. This time, anti-Semitic soccer fans are outraged (for reasons that are completely unclear) about Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy?s work to save the Spurs a ton of money in some contract deal that I don?t care about in any way, shape, or form. Here are a few more of the dozens and dozens, almost all of which are published under the actual names and with the actual photos of the people who wrote them: I think this one is my favorite: Levy?s problem, obviously, is letting everyone see the bag of gold he?s wearing around his neck. If he kept the bag of gold at home or in a bank or in the synagogue basement, these guys would be none the wiser and I wouldn?t be writing any of this today. HT: Matt Langdon . ...

IRS employees spending millions of hours and taxpayers dollars on union work

The Internal Revenue Service has revealed that the agency?s employees have spent thousands of hours on union activities courtesy of the American taxpayer.

In a response letter to Ways and Means Oversight Subcommittee Chairman Charles Boustany released Tuesday, IRS principal deputy commissioner Daniel Werfel wrote that in Fiscal Year 2012, IRS employees used 573,319 hours for union activities. In FY 2013 through June 2013, according to Werfel, employees have used another 399,772 hours for union activities.

House Ways and Means Committee Republicans noted that the number of hours IRS employees spent on union activities constituted the equivalent of 23,888 days in FY 2012 and 16,657 days to date in FY 2013 ? and represents approximately $16 million ?taxpayer-funded wages that went exclusively to union activity.?

Werfel further explained in his letter to Boustany that the IRS spent $687,400 on travel expenses for union activity in FY 2012. In FY 2013 through June 2013, the IRS spent $437,548 on union travel.

In April, Boustany sent a letter requesting detailed information about IRS employees spending official time on union training and activities. Werfel?s letter this week constituted a response to his original missive.

?It is ridiculous that the IRS can come before Congress and request an additional $1 billion while dedicating millions of taxpayer dollars on union related activities,? Boustany said in a statement reacting to the findings. ?Until the IRS shows it is using its budget to better serve taxpayers, it should not come to Congress asking for more money.?

In June, The Daily Caller reported that an Americans for Limited Government Freedom of Information Act revealed that 201 IRS employees work full-time on union activities.

According to the Office of Personnel Management, in 2011 ? the most recent year for which data is available?? bargaining employees at all federal government agencies spending a total of 3,395,187 hours on union work, at a cost of approximately $155 million.

This Solar Charging Tent Means You Can Never Get Away From Gadgets

Camping used to be all about getting away from the clutter of our increasingly connected lives. But then electronic devices became "mobile", which it turns out means "magnetically attracted to our thumbs," and solar charging was a necessity. Now Eddie Bauer (the company) is making a tent with a built in solar charger, and Eddie Bauer (the badass) is probably screaming obscenities in his grave.

Historian Presents Evidence Of Same-Sex Marriage Ceremonies Performed In The Christian Church In 100 AD

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

Source: www.towleroad.com --- Wednesday, July 31, 2013
Many LGBT rights advocates considered the Pope's recent message of tolerance towards gay priests and Christians to be quite revolutionary, despite what some have argued to the contrary. However, according to historian John Boswell and his seminal book Same-Sex Unions in Premodern Europe , the Christian Church has already performed same-sex unions. Granted, it was some centuries ago during the Dark Ages. Nevertheless, io9 reports that : "There were dozens of records of Church ceremonies where two men were joined in unions that used the same rituals as heterosexual marriages. (He found almost no records of lesbian unions, which is probably an artifact of a culture which kept more records about the lives of men generally.)" The Catholic historian's book was published in 1994, shortly before his death from AIDS. As io9 noted, "given the Church's present-day views on gay marriage, these detractors argued, Boswell's history seemed like wishful thinking." Now, the book is being re-released as an e-book, and finding itself in the spotlight once again. It chronicles much of Boswell's research the he conducted throughout the 1970's and 80's, sifting through legal and Church records from throughout the late Roman Empire and Early Christian Church. So why doesn't the Church recognize same-sex unions anymore? Any why are the documents chronicling these same-sex unions just now surfacing centuries later? "One easy answer is that ? as Boswell a ...

Investors look to Fed for further clues on rates

WASHINGTON (AP) ? When the Federal Reserve offers its latest word on interest rates this week, few think it will telegraph the one thing investors have been most eager to know: When it will slow its bond purchases, which have kept long-term borrowing rates low.

The Fed might choose to clarify a separate issue: When it may raise its key short-term rate. The Fed has kept that rate near zero since 2008. It's said it plans to keep it there at least as long as unemployment remains above 6.5 percent and the inflation outlook below 2.5 percent.

Unemployment is now 7.6 percent; the inflation rate is roughly 1 percent.

Chairman Ben Bernanke has stressed that the Fed could decide to keep its short-term rate ultra-low even after unemployment reaches 6.5 percent. Testifying to Congress this month, Bernanke noted that a key reason unemployment has declined is that many Americans have stopped looking for jobs. When people stop looking for work, they're no longer counted as unemployed.

If that trend continues, Bernanke said that lower unemployment could mask a still-weak job market and that the Fed might feel short-term rates should stay at record lows.

In the statement the Fed will issue when its two-day meeting ends Wednesday, it could specify an unemployment rate below 6.5 percent that would be needed before it might raise its benchmark short-term rate. It might also say that it won't raise that rate if inflation fell below a specific level.

Investors would react to any such shift in the Fed's guidance. Financial markets have been pivoting for months on speculation that the Fed will or won't soon slow its $85-billion-a-month in Treasury and mortgage bond purchases. Those purchases have led more consumers and businesses to borrow, fueled a stock rally and supported an economy slowed by tax increases and federal spending cuts.

The Fed has signaled that it might slow its bond buying as soon as September ? if the economy has strengthened as much as the Fed has forecast. If not, the Fed would likely maintain its stimulus.

On Wednesday, the government will report how fast the economy grew in the April-June quarter. Most economists predict an annual rate of barely 1 percent ? far too weak to quickly reduce unemployment. Most think the growth is picking up in the second half of the year on the strength of a resurgent housing market, stronger auto sales, steady job gains and higher pay.

Many economists think the key goal of the Fed's policy discussions Tuesday and Wednesday will be to stress that the Fed's actions in coming months will hinge on how the economy fares, not on any timetable.

Some economists think the Fed will be mindful that the Dow Jones industrial average sank more than 500 points in two days after it met in June and Bernanke said the Fed would likely slow its bond-buying this year and end it next year because the economy was improving.

"The Fed is going to try to calm things down," said Brian Bethune, an economics professor at Gordon College, in Wenham, Mass.

Last month, in what was likely his last economic report to Congress, Bernanke said that even after the Fed has begun slowing its bond purchases, its policymaking will keep lending costs down. Besides keeping its short-term rate low, Bernanke stressed that the Fed will maintain its vast investment portfolio ? which exceeds $3.4 trillion ?to help keep long-term borrowing costs down.

Some economists still think the Fed will start trimming its bond purchases at its Sept. 17-18 meeting. Unlike this week's meeting, the September meeting will be followed by a news conference in which Bernanke could explain the actions.

Diane Swonk, chief economist at Mesirow Financial, said she believes September is a likely time for the Fed to scale back its bond buying. Yet she doubted it will do anything this week to signal that possibility.

"The less said right now, the better" for financial markets, Swonk said.

David Jones, chief economist at DMJ Advisors, said he still thinks the Fed will start trimming its bond purchases gradually starting in September. But he thinks that date could slip if the economy doesn't strengthen over the next two months. Other economists think the Fed may prefer to wait until after September to trim its purchases to make sure the economy is sustaining its gains.

The Fed's moves to reduce its bond purchases will likely occur just as it will be managing a transition to a new leader. Bernanke is widely expected to step down when his second four-year term as chairman ends Jan. 31.

Vice Chair Janet Yellen is viewed as a leading candidate to replace Bernanke, though former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers and others have also been mentioned.

Blood Pressure Swings Could Be Linked to Mental ... - Health.com

By Steven Reinberg
HealthDay Reporter

TUESDAY, July 30 (HealthDay News) ? Wide fluctuations in blood pressure may be associated with memory and thinking difficulties in older adults already at high risk for heart disease, a new European study suggests.

Regardless of average blood pressure, ?high variability in blood pressure may lead to mental impairment,? said lead researcher Dr. Simon Mooijaart, director of the Institute for Evidence-Based Medicine in Old Age in Leiden, the Netherlands.

The three-year study, published July 30 in the online edition of the BMJ, involved more than 5,000 seniors, average age 75.

Fluctuating blood pressure has previously been linked with an increased risk of stroke, and evidence is mounting that factors that disrupt blood flow to the brain contribute to dementia?s development and progression, the researchers noted.

However, because the study shows only an association, not a cause-and-effect relationship, Mooijaart cautioned that it is still too early to make definitive claims about blood pressure inconsistency and mental decline.

?It?s an interesting association, because it might very well be causal,? he said. If it is causal, controlling these fluctuations with blood pressure medication might help reduce the risk of dementia, Mooijaart added. But further research is needed, the study authors noted.

?It?s very important to keep your vasculature healthy to prevent detrimental effects to your body,? Mooijaart said.

Another heart expert agreed.

?Variability in blood pressure readings has been shown to be associated with greater risk of heart attack and stroke, independent of average blood pressure readings,? said Dr. Gregg Fonarow, a professor of cardiology at the University of California, Los Angeles, and a spokesman for the American Heart Association.

Blood pressure medications can reduce fluctuations and lower the risk of cardiovascular events, stroke and, some studies suggest, decline in mental function, he added.

?Physicians and patients with hypertension should increase focus on keeping blood pressure levels consistently at goal levels minimizing, to the extent possible, fluctuations in blood pressure,? Fonarow said.

To gauge the effect of blood pressure changes on mental ability, Mooijaart?s team collected data on more than 5,400 men and women, aged 70 to 82, who took part in the Prospective Study of Pravastatin in the Elderly at Risk. That study, conducted by centers in Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands, looked at whether lowering cholesterol protected people at risk for heart disease.

Over three years of follow-up, participants? blood pressure was checked every three months. Researchers looked at the variability in those readings and tested participants? mental functioning. Specific tests evaluated attention, reaction time and memory.

Mooijaart?s team found that people whose blood pressure varied from visit to visit performed worse on all of the tests than those with stable readings. These results persisted after the researchers accounted for cardiovascular disease and average blood pressure.

But Mooijaart said it isn?t clear whether blood pressure variability is a cause or consequence of impaired mental function.

Several explanations may exist for this connection, he said. It?s possible that blood pressure variability and mental impairment both result from cardiovascular risk factors. Or blood pressure variability might be a sign of long-term instability in blood flow to vital organs. Another possibility is that blood pressure fluctuations could deprive the brain of blood, which might lead to poorer mental functioning, Mooijaart noted.

France wants mandate for EU-US trade talks published

PARIS (Reuters) - France called on Monday for the European Commission to make public its mandate to negotiate EU-U.S. free-trade talks, citing what it said was an atmosphere of mistrust over efforts to forge a landmark pact.

The U.S. and EU launched the negotiations earlier this month despite European concerns about U.S. spying that had threatened to delay the start after nearly two years of preparation. France moreover only agreed to the talks after securing assurances that its entertainment industry would be ringfenced.

"The first week of discussions on a transatlantic partnership agreement closed in a climate of doubt," Trade Minister Nicole Bricq wrote in French newspaper Liberation.

"The U.S. once again showed its splendid ambivalence. It is a country where everything seems possible and whose dynamism and energy we French envy. At the same time it is a prickly power incapable of resisting the temptations its supremacy gives it."

Stressing the need for transparency in the talks, Bricq said she had asked EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht to break with usual procedure and make the EU's negotiation mandate public.

"It doesn't contain any secrets. It's a political statement that calls for an agreement that respects our values and interests. It deserves to be debated," she said.

The Commission's mandates to negotiate international trade deals are not made public because it could weaken the EU's hand by revealing its limits to Washington and U.S. lobbies. That said, unofficial leaks of the mandate are common.

"If the talks with United States are for a partnership, and if we are working as equals, then our practices need to change so that we speak the same language," she said.

Bricq also said the Commission should regularly inform the European Parliament of the progress of the talks. At present, the Commission must do so at the end of each round.

The first round of talks, which took place in Washington from July 8 to July 12, mainly set the stage for more substantive negotiations in the weeks and months ahead as the two sides strive to reach a deal by late 2014.

Robin Thicke: 'Blurred Lines' like 'great art'

Performances

You can run, but you can't hide from "Blurred Lines," the song that has turned out to be the surprise hit of Summer 2013. The song spent 7 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard charts, while also generating a certain amount of controversy for its lyrics.

Thicke took the plaza's stage (holding a shiny gold microphone) to sing the tune, along with "Take It Easy On Me" and to chat with TODAY's Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie on Tuesday. Oh, and they also addressed the debate over the song's lyrics.

"When we made the song we had nothing but the most respect for women," said the 36-year-old singer, who releases his sixth album, also called "Blurred Lines," on Tuesday.

"I've been with the same woman since I was a teenager," he added. "Sometimes the lyrics can get misconstrued when you're just trying to put people on the dance floor and have a good time. But we had no idea it would stir this much controversy.... We only had the best intentions."

Anyway, he says, controversy is good: "That's what great art does, it's supposed to stir conversation, it's supposed to make us talk about what's important."

Well, whether you think "Blurred Lines" is "great art" or not, it sure is a catchy tune. Be sure to check out the videos of Thicke's performances from TODAY and the great tweets, Vines and Instagrams from our fans and TODAY anchors.

Israel and Palestine aim to agree peace deal within nine months

Israel and Palestine will seek to reach a peace agreement within nine months and negotiators will meet again within two weeks after holding a ?positive? first round of talks, US secretary of state John Kerry said today.

Senior aides to Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas held their first talks this week since 2010, but focused largely on the framework for negotiations rather than the substance of their dispute.

Speaking after the meetings, which included a session with president Barack Obama and vice president Joe Biden as well as direct talks between the two sides without US officials present, Mr Kerry said he believed peace was possible despite the obstacles.

The Irish Times takes no responsibility for the content or availability of other websites.

?I am pleased to report that in the conversations we have had last night and again today, we have had constructive and positive meetings,? he said, flanked by Israeli justice minister Tzipi Livni and Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat.

?I know the path is difficult. There is no shortage of passionate skeptics. But with capable, respected negotiators ... I am convinced that we can get there,? he added. ?All of the core issues, and all other issues, are all on the table for negotiation.?

Mr Kerry, who has prodded, coaxed and cajoled the two sides to resume negotiations in a flurry of visits to the Middle East during his less than six months in office, has urged Israelis and Palestinians to strike ?reasonable compromises.?

The United States is seeking to broker an agreement on a ?two-state solution,? in which Israel would exist peacefully alongside a new Palestinian state created in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, lands occupied by the Israelis since a 1967 war.

The major issues to be resolved in the talks include borders, the future of Jewish settlements in the West Bank, the fate of Palestinian refugees and the status of Jerusalem.

Advanced Epic Fantasy - Calisma Rebirth

Hello all!

I had the extreme pleasure of creating a largely successful, long-term roleplay in the epic fantasy genre. It was an absolute pleasure to watch the characters grow and interact through a guided storyline. It was with a heavy heart that I had to close the roleplay due to time restraints. Even after the Completion of the roleplay, which was abrupt, character sheets have continued to pour in and requests have continued to be posted for a reopening of this universe. Now, I think, is the time to rebirth Calisma.

While the storyline will change course, it will continue on from the previous content. Don't worry, I made it a habit to summarize as we progressed. There is quite a bit of lore and history to read through, so if you get distracted after a paragraph or two this would not be something you'd enjoy.

This is an interest check to see if I can gather enough support to re-establish a roleplay. I'm seeking skilled, dedicated and creative writers to join me on an adventure of epic proportions. Please send me a message, or post below, if you're interested.

Thanks for your time!

Alright, New York Times, another article stating that millennials are a sex-obsessed, commitment-afraid group of people who hook up to pursue our careers. How many times do I have to say that we are not the only generation that has hooked up before? Please do not define our generation as the hook-up generation. It is far too soon.

Silly Times, did you forget the abundance of babies born from 1946-1964? With that many babies born, you have to remember what it takes to make a baby ? that?s right, sex. So, all the randy soldiers came home to their wives (or husbands) and got it on. Granted, that is not the only reason why there are Baby Boomers. Soldiers were coming home to more prosperous times and many individuals wanted a sense of normalcy, so therefore wanted to start families. And we cannot forget about the sexual revolution.

The sexual revolution was defined by sexual exploration, birth control, and women?s rights. During this time, of course people were having sex. Many people believe that millennials are having more sex than people were during the sexual revolution. That is actually wrong. Elizabeth Armstrong, Laura Hamilton, and Laura A. England find that those born after 1942 (i.e. Baby Boomers) were more sexually active at younger ages than those born from 1933-1942, according to the National Health and Social Survey. Also, the Centers for Disease Control reported that rates of sexual intercourse among 9-12th graders (millenials) decreased from 1991-2007. So to say that millennials were having more sex than Boomers, would be quite wrong.

free love

Plus, Laura England found that when surveying 14,000 people from 19 different universities, 72% of men and women hooked up at least one time by their senior year, but only 20% participated in 10 or more hookups by their senior year.?The study also noted that 69% of students participated in a long-term relationship. So yes, while hooking up is prevalent amongst millenials, there are still plenty in committed relationships.

Again, the Times? use of anecdotes supposedly paints a picture of a millennial hookup. The girl only identified as ?A? claims that she only hooks up with her beau when they are drunk, and and that ?we don?t really like each other in person, sober,? adding that ?we literally can?t sit down and have coffee.?? ?A? explains that careers are more important and that relationships seem to be too much of a hassle. Again, this is one point of view, from one campus, from one girl who doesn?t seem to have trouble attracting men. The article does feature another girl, Mercedes, a junior at Penn who decides not to opt into relationships at all and explains how she hasn?t kissed anybody by her junior year. At least they represented this aspect of relationships.

It?s worth commending the Times? desire to survey students about female sexuality, asking 60 women from all types of backgrounds, socioeconomic statuses, and walks of life, but they limited it to just Penn. For a more general outlook on sexuality, one would need to survey multiple colleges ranging from Ivy Leagues to small private colleges to huge public universities. The attitudes you may receive on sexuality will differ at a small private Christian college, compared to a Big 10 university known for its partying atmosphere. And even at my alma mater, Michigan State, people make a huge variety of choices about their relationships. I focused on my schoolwork at the time but decided to have a relationship after college. I have numerous friends who met their love freshman year and are married, engaged, or in a long-term committed relationship. I was single for quite some time and now am in a relationship. I know people who have been always in a relationship and are recently single.

So it just might be a little too soon to define how millennials deal with sexuality. Millennials, younger and older, are settling down. Millennials, younger and older, are hooking up. The point is that millenials are still continuing to define sexuality, and it might be too soon to talk about us as the ?hookup? generation as if we?re the first ones to do it.

To catch a thief: Masked man hunted after $53M Cannes jewel heist

In a brazen heist, a masked man allegedly armed with a pistol walked into the legendary Carlton Hotel in Cannes, France, and stole about $53 million of jewels that were being set up for display. NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports.

By Michelle Kosinski and Alastair Jamieson, NBC News

CANNES, France ? The estimated value of diamonds and jewels stolen from a glamorous French Riviera hotel more than doubled on Monday to $136 million, making it one of the world?s biggest heists.

Police previously estimated the worth of the stolen collection to be around $53 million, but a more complete inventory conducted by the Dubai-based organizer of the diamond show resulted in the value of the stolen goods to sky rocket even higher, a French state prosecutor told the Associated Press.

The audacious raid prompted one security expert to speculate that the notorious "Pink Panther" jewel thief gang was "on the warpath again."

The lone robber walked into the Carlton Intercontinental Hotel in Cannes late morning Sunday and demanded to be handed several bags containing jewels and diamond-encrusted watches.

"Everything happened very quickly," a judicial source told Reuters, adding that there was no violence.

Philippe Vique, an assistant prosecutor in the Riviera town of Grasse, said Monday that the man covered his face with a scarf, cap and wore gloves while pulling off the logistically simple crime.

Vique told the Associated Press that the man broke in through French doors, held up participants of the show with a handgun and fled on foot.

The robbery took only about one minute, and three private security guards were on hand, along with two vendors and a manager of the sale exhibit, according to the AP.

No customers were present during the crime.

The hotel, a haunt of the rich and famous, was where Alfred Hitchcock filmed scenes from the 1955 film "To Catch a Thief", starring Cary Grant as burglar alongside Grace Kelly.

It was hosting a temporary jewelry exhibit over the summer from the prestigious Leviev diamond house, which is owned by Israeli billionaire Lev Leviev.

The heist came two months after two smaller jewelry robberies hit the annual Cannes film festival, where many of the world's top movie stars are lent gowns and gems to parade on the red carpets and at glamorous parties.

The crime follows recent jail escapes by Pink Panther gang members.

Jonathan Sazonoff, U.S. editor for the Museum Security Network website and an authority on high-value crime, told The Associated Press that police would likely probe whether the heist is linked to the escapes.

On Thursday, gang member Milan Poparic escaped his Swiss prison after accomplices rammed a gate and overpowered guards with bursts from their AK-47s.

"The brazen drama of it is their style... The possibility of the reemergence of the Pink Panther gang is very troubling and taken seriously by law enforcement worldwide," Sazonoff said. "The theft of high value diamonds is exactly what they do, so it's not a great leap to assume they are on the warpath again. They are a crime wave waiting to happen."

The heist would appear to top a raid of a store in Paris in 2008 that netted more than $100 million worth of gems and jewelry.

"It's a huge theft,? Sazonoff told The AP. ?Anytime you talk about a heist with many millions of dollars it turns heads and feeds the imagination.?

In a statement seen by Reuters, Leviev said: "Company officials are cooperating with local authorities investigating the loss and are relieved that no one was injured in the robbery."

?There are three types of jewel thieves,? said financial crime author Jeffrey Robinson. ?There?s the idiot who walks into a jewelry store with a shotgun smashes and grabs and gets caught, then there?s the people who break into your home and try to steal a wedding ring.

?But then this third type - and this is the important one - he is the professional businessman. And his business is jewel thievery.?

NBC News' Andrew Rafferty, the Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

NBA Eastern Conference: Miami Heat to Fight Harder For Top Spot

NBA East

Robert Mayer-USA TODAY Sports

This upcoming season in the NBA is promising to be a good one as every team has something to prove. However, in the Eastern Conference, we have seen some changes that could differ the standings from the last playoff picture, and the possibility is high.

The Miami Heat still have LeBron James and Dwyane Wade to lead their team throughout the year, perhaps to an expected third consecutive title in a fourth consecutive NBA Finals appearance. Although, no one said that it is going to be easy.

The Indiana Pacers just added Luis Scola to jump in off the bench to use his veteran scoring skills that have won games in the past. Also, Danny Granger will be back after a long injury lay-off to help propel his team to a Finals appearance. This team was so close this past season as they lost in seven to James and company.

The Chicago Bulls are finally getting their star point guard? Derrick Rose back from a knee injury that kept him out during the entirety of last season. Whenever he plays, he scores points and wins games by himself when he has to. With teammates at hand, he can definitely lead his team to new heights?possibly a place in the Finals.

The Brooklyn Nets recently added Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce to an already decent line-up. With their veteran leadership and Finals experience (one ring each), this team can cause Miami and the rest of the East some trouble en route to the top of the East in the playoffs.

The NY Knicks added Andrea Bargnani, but lost J.R. Smith to a knee injury that will keep him on the sidelines for at least a year. This team will not make the Finals, but will make it to the postseason.

The Milwaukee Bucks have added OJ Mayo and Carlos Delfino who are both good scorers whether starting or off the bench. This team is getting much needed help by adding these two vets. They may get past the first round, but nothing further.

The Atlanta Hawks added Elton Brand to replace Josh Smith, but he will not have nearly the same impact. This team is still good enough to make the playoffs, but will lose in the first round.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have not made the postseason since the James era. Now, with Kyrie Irving leading this team, with some young talent and a veteran guard joining his forces in Jarrett Jack, this team is ready to make a return to Elite Eight, but only that, as they will be out after the first round. Regardless, this is still good for a team that is rebuilding with a fresh breed of players being led by some long-time boys.

With all of that written and done, the East will still most likely be won by Miami unless it loses a couple of pieces or another top team finds a way to dismantle it in seven games. With the squads revamped with new faces and star players back from injury, this season is promising to be a good one. Stay tuned and enjoy.

During the last ice age, more than 12,000 years ago, many unusual creatures wandered Southern California. Some got trapped in tar pits there. Now, their preserved remains are providing scientists with clues about summer weather during that bygone era.

These fossils indicate the Los Angeles area had an ice age summer that at times stretched surprisingly long: to four months, maybe more.
