Press box always beckons England's cricket captains ? Sports ...

Surrounded by packing cases, NORMAN GILLER pops his head up from behind the sofa after being subjected to more abuse for his top picks than Villas Boas

Andrew Strauss, twice a winning Ashes captain. Now working for The Sun, will he ever be considered as a great sports writer?

In my 55 years of scribbling for a living (yawn), I have rarely stirred up so much vitriol as greeted my roll call here last week of the 50 finest British sportswriters of my lifetime.

I thought I had made it clear that I was leaving the choice of the best of the latest breed of sports scribes to those more in tune with current deadlines and headlines. You can cast your vote in the Press Gazette poll.

Among the angry attacks made on me on Twitter and Facebook was that I had not included anybody under 40 on my list ?? what an insult to today?s young sports journalists?.

I happen to think there is an army of talented young sports scribes out there, but longevity came into my thinking when assessing my top writers. Let?s see if the bright young things of today are shining brightly over the next decade or so.

In my brief but brilliant appearance on Des Kelly?s probing Press Pass programme on TalkSport I made the point that going back to the likes of JL Manning (who always had the Last Word in the Daily Mail) there has been a high bench mark for the standard of sports writing.

Randall Northam, once an ace athletics reporter and now a respected publisher and hon. treasurer of the SJA, argued that those Fleet Street legends Dennis Signy and Vic Railton should have been included in my list.

I countered by pointing out that this was a rating of the top 50 sports writers. If I had been compiling a list of the greatest news gatherers, Dennis and Vic along with the likes of Harry Harris and extraordinary investigative reporter Andrew Jennings would have featured prominently.

Steve Curry, who was my number two in the Daily Express football team, went on Facebook to complain that he ?felt rejected.? If I didn?t make the top 50, Steve, why should you?

I told Steve that he was in good company with those who did not find a place in my list, including exceptional writers like Brough Scott, Henry Longhurst, Mike Langley, Matthew Engel, Oliver Holt, Arthur Hopcraft and so many others who charmed Fleet Street with their words.

I must make a list of things not to do in future.

Number 1: don?t make a list.

?

I APPLAUD ANDREW STRAUSS on his decision to get off while at the top of the mountain. One of the hardest things for veteran sports masters to do is get out at the right time. Few manage it.

Strauss leaves with dignity and with memories of mostly good times, apart from when KP was driving him nuts.

Strauss was quickly snappe up by The Sun, joining a what is virtually an XI of former England Test captains in the press and? commentary boxes.

One thing?s for sure, he is unlikely to spark the sort of furore when another ex-England cricket captain caused a Fleet Street war.

I was a copyboy on the late, lamented Evening News in London in 1956 when the newly knighted and newly retired Sir Len Hutton was signed to ?write? on the Ashes series.

EM (Lyn) Wellings, a former Oxford Blue and Surrey off-spinner and the News cricket correspondent since the end of the war, went a purple-faced apoplectic when he heard of Hutton?s appointment. I just happened to be in ?the sportswriters room? at Ludgate House when he was told that Hutton would be commenting at the Lord?s Test. ?The fuck he will,? snapped Wellings.

To hear the ?F? word falling from the lips of Wellings was as shocking to the ears as hearing your maiden aunt cussing. He was an extremely dignified and awfully posh man with a cut-glass accent, and who always wore either a cravat or an MCC tie.

Wellings was not revolting against Hutton becoming his unwelcome team mate so much as the fact that his copy would be ghost-written. This was a tinderbox issue throughout Fleet Street at the time, with the NUJ leading the fight against the employment of non-journalist sportswriters.

Keith Miller, a future Express sports writer, in Test match action for Australia in 1956

Using his influence as a distinguished founder member of the Cricket Writers? Club, Wellings managed to get Hutton barred from the Lord?s Press Box.

The compromise was that three seats were made available alongside the covered, glass-fronted Press Box (this is, of course, long before the cucumber was installed). One seat was for Sir Len. One for his ghost, the esteemed Julian Holland (later the driving force of BBC?s News At One programme). And one for the copy telephonist ? little me.

I was not allowed to use a Press Box telephone, and had to gallop downstairs to a public phone box every 20 minutes or at the fall of a wicket. If the phone was being used by one of the 20,000 spectators, I would then have to race outside the ground to another call box, with Hutton?s priceless thoughts on a sheet of paper in my hand.

After one dash, I returned breathlessly to my seat to find it occupied by an Evening News reporter on a day off. It was Leslie Thomas, who in his spare time was writing the book that was to earn him his fame and fortune: Virgin Soldiers. I have since often reminded him how he graciously allowed me to stand beside him while he sat on my chair.

BBC television was covering the match live, and when commentator Brian Johnston referred to the ?Hutton barred? story, the cameras panned the Press Box and then showed Sir Len on the outside, giving his considered views to the typewriter-tapping Holland.

Wellings was tipped off that the cameras kept showing close ups of him and Hutton just yards apart. He waited his moment, and when the camera next started on a panning shot, he held up a foolscap pad on which he had written in large block capitals: BOLLOCKS.

I was a member of the NATSOPA union at the time, and got a rollocking from our FoC for being an innocent (I thought) co-conspirator in the ghosting of Hutton.

Many years later I was scripting a This Is Your Life tribute to Denis Compton, and went to Sir Len?s Surrey home to film a short piece. I reminded him of the Lord?s affair, and he told me: ?Wellings and I never saw eye to eye. He was always critical of me because he did not think a professional should captain England.?

There is a hilarious/appalling punchline: Wellings (full name Evelyn Maitland Wellings) wrote for the Evening News for 36 years until it became unlovingly embraced by the Evening Standard in 1980. He received a letter about pension entitlements from the Associated Newspapers management that read: ?Dear Mrs Wellings ?? The same company sent Reg Gutteridge his gold watch for 40 years service in a brown paper envelope.

In that Lord?s Test of 1956, Keith Miller claimed 10 wickets to lift Australia to victory by 185 runs. Less than 10 years later Keith was my colleague on the Daily Express as a non-ghostwritten journalist.

He used to hold us enthralled at liquid lunches at the Cheshire Cheese and the Albion with tales from the dressing room. I asked him what the pressure was like when Jim Laker was skittling the Aussies at Old Trafford later in the ?56 series.

?What pressure?? said the former Royal Australian Air Force fighter pilot. ?Pressure is when you?ve got a Messerschmitt up your arse.?

Keith would get into my top-50 world sportswriters, topped by the great Red Smith, just ahead of Ring Lardner and Damon Runyan ? oops, nearly started writing another list.

A MOVING FOOTNOTE:? I have now moved across the border from dozy delightful Dorset into ?Appy ?Ampshire for the last big adventure of my life. I have shifted into a dolls? house a short distance from where John Arlott first started talking cricket. Now why didn?t I find room for him in my Top 50? He was The Master.

Google Play's End of Summer Sale outed by discounted app descriptions, lets the Lorax speak for the savings

It looks like a handful of select apps have outed Mountain View's Labor day plans: Google Play's End of Summer Sale. SwiftKey 3, The Lorax -- Dr. Seuss, Square Enix's Crystal Defenders, and other apps are now brandishing deep discounts, almost uniformly attributing the savings to the End of Summer Sale. Not every title on discount claims to be part of the unannounced event, however -- Max Payne Mobile slashed its price by 67 percent without so much as a hint at the alleged festivities. Google hasn't made the event official just yet, but we'd be willing to wager the deals will run through the holiday weekend. Check out the source link below to start making the most of your Google gift cards.

Article on Bequesting Season Tickets

R00355756Rachael Rustmann recently published her article entitled It's a Brand New Ballgame: How to Bequest Season Tickets For Your Favorite Sports Team's Games, 4 EPJ 369 (2012). ?The introduction to the article is available below:?

It all started with the Greek Olympic Games. According to written records, the history of sporting events dates back to when the first Olympic games were held in 776 B.C. At that time, the sole event was the stade: an approximately 210-yard run. For nearly 1,200 years, the Olympic games expanded, and athletes continually competed every four years. However, in 393 C.E., Roman emperor Theodosius I abolished the Olympic games because?of their pagan influences. Fortunately, Pierre de Coubertin helped revive the Olympic games in 1896.?

About the same time that the Olympic games were making their way into the sports arena, football was beginning to develop in America. In 1876, members from Harvard, and various other universities in the United States, met to formalize the rules for their new game, which they based somewhat on rugby; they called the game ?football.? While these institutions and their scholars were just beginning to develop football in the northeastern United States, athletes had already been playing baseball in the United States for almost a century. Baseball, America?s pastime, ?has given our people rest and recreation, myths and memories, heroes, history and hope.? Basketball, like football and baseball, is another sport invented in the 19th century. Dr. James Naismath created basketball in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1891.

A century after their creation, these various sports evolved into a symbol of American life. Most day-to-day conversations and water cooler talk revolve around sports topics. As a result of this American obsession with sports entertainment, more professional team organizations are capitalizing upon this by marketing season tickets and seat licenses to fans as the business of the sports industry expands. Regardless of a fan?s reason for liking or disliking a team, that allegiance will always be there, in life and in death. This is why many fans with valuable season tickets to various sporting events want to be able to pass on their interest to their friends and family members when they pass.?

Whether it is baseball, football, or basketball, sports in America are an integral part of everyday life. Many people even identify themselves based on their allegiance to various sports teams. Baseball fans of the New York Yankees automatically dislike Boston Red Sox fans and vice versa.

Unfortunately, violent crimes have even resulted from these rivalries. Roughly 70% of the population identifies themselves with some sports team. Some devoted fans have gone so far as vomiting out of anxiety before every kickoff, skipping weddings for games, and even giving up their spot on transplant lists to avoid missing a game. Fans like this have been around forever: ?In the Iliad, Homer described spectators at a chariot race peering through the dust and trying to see who was winning. Arguments ensued, bets were made, and a fight almost erupted before Achilles told everyone to chill.??

Many teams, such as the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, Green Bay Packers, and the Duke University Blue Devils, have decade-long waiting lists and can have anywhere from 30,000?60,000 people waiting for a chance to purchase these highly coveted season tickets.?

Regardless of the economic climate looming outside the gates, Americans have always spent countless dollars on sporting events and the activities and?costs that come with them. Fans will wait day and night for tickets to some of sport?s most coveted events like the Super Bowl and NCAA March Madness. Some fans, however, will wait a lifetime or more for coveted season tickets to America?s most elite teams? games. Many sports teams, such as the Green Bay Packers, have their own guidelines and forms for passing on season tickets at death. These forms are usually available through the organization and are meant to help settle most disputes that could potentially arise, but many disputes do arise if the decedent dies intestate.?

This comment explains how individuals can pass on the right to purchase coveted season tickets in their will, if there is a fee associated with the transfer, and if there is a tax or transfer fee associated with the transfer. It will also propose a solution to the varying transfer policies among the sports organizations.?

Part I of this comment introduced the history of sporting events and the integral part those events play in everyday American lives. Part II discusses various teams that already have forms that provide current season ticket owners with the opportunity to transfer tickets and if there is a property interest created by owning season tickets. Part III discusses if there are any transfer fees and if Congress may tax the transfer or purchase of tickets as an inheritance tax or part of the estate tax. Part IV uses a hypothetical situation of a man who has season tickets to multiple teams? events, and it discusses the difficulties the season ticket holder, lawyers, and courts may face because of the varying team policies. Finally, Part V proposes a solution to the problem with varying transfer policies by implementing a uniform transfer policy among all sports organizations. This can be achieved either by Congress passing a statute that applies to all organizations, each individual state?s congress adopting a statute that applies to the teams within that state, or creating a vested property right with the season ticket holder when he or she purchases the tickets.?

Marketing a Private Rental Property: The Essentials

The property market, although generally reasonably stable, can have its ups and downs. But with the right tips and marketing tools at your disposal, you need not worry about instability with your private rental property. The right type of marketing and exposure can ensure that your property has permanent, paying tenants, and that any tenant-free periods are as short as possible.

The first thing to keep in mind when marketing your private rental property is that no two properties are the same. You should make sure that you emphasize all the aspects of your property that make it unique to make t more appealing to prospective tenant. It is important that your property description and photos present your property in the best light.

It is important that you spend time on the marketing and maintenance of your private rental property to minimize vacancy periods. However, should a situation arise where you need to look for short-term tenants, it is important to be flexible and commit to finding the best tenants for the shorter time period. A private rental property is a big investment and so it is well worth making sure that your property is in good hands.

If you want to make your property available as a private rental, there are a lot of things that you need to consider in order to make it a success. Just one of these things is whether or not your property is furnished. If you intend to make your property available for holiday rentals or short-term stays, your property should be furnished. But if you intend to make the property available for longer-term contracts, it is advisable that you leave the property unfurnished because tenants will most likely prefer to use their own furniture.

If you want to be a good landlord and find success as the owner of a private rental property, there are a lot of things you need to consider. One of the most important skills you can have is that skill of communicating with your tenants. This is an important factor in getting tenants who are willing to stay for the long-term, will not damage your property and who are able to pay regular rent.

CV dos and don?ts ? how to write a CV that will grab employers? attention

In the current competitive job market a well written curriculum vitae will make the difference between whether or not you?re considered for a job. As someone who?s written hundreds of drafts and spent countless hours tweaking mine over the last few months, I?m sharing what I think are the main points to remember when writing an attention-grabbing CV:

1) Make it look good!

A surprisingly high number of CVs are submitted without the format and look of the document being properly considered. Your CV is likely to be one of many and any that aren?t well presented will be instantly discarded ? you need to show employers you?ve made an effort and are interested in the job.

If you?re a student you can go to your university or college career?s centre for advice on this, or if you are a Microsoft Word user there are templates to download to use as a guide. And it should go without saying, but check the spelling ? mistakes like this will be a big deterrent to prospective employers, even if you have the right experience for the role.

2) Think about the structure

There is no perfect structure for a CV, it will differ according to the role and industry, but there are several areas that should always be included:

  • Contact details ? your name, address, email and if relevant to the role any social media pages (i.e. Twitter) you?re happy to share details of.

  • Career history ? ordered from most recent first and for each role include a short synopsis on your role, responsibilities skills and any promotions.

  • Reasons for a career change or a gap in your career history, and what you perceived the benefit of this time to be, i.e. voluntary work or retraining could make you stand out from other candidates and highlight your passion for a sector.

  • Make it concise, preferably no more than two sides of A4. This shows a prospective employer you are able to determine what is relevant information and it makes it digestible ? you want this to be an interesting document which highlights your strengths and achievements, not something that is long-winded as you can go into more detail at your interview.

3) Tailor it

Your CV should be tweaked for every role you apply for ? this might be a time consuming process but it is important to show you?ve responded to the job description. Do you need to highlight your team work skills, ability to multitask or management skills? Research the company, who are the clients you could be working with and what is your experience in these sectors? And do you have any relevant hobbies or interests that could be referenced?

4) Tell the truth!

If you falsify anything on your CV you could run the risk of being unable to evidence your claims in an interview, or, being unable to adequately deliver the job. If you?re struggling to match your experience to a job description this probably means it isn?t right role, it is much better to be positive and confident about your experience and skills, and you can always send your CV to an HR department asking to be considered for a future position at your level.

5) Send a cover letter

A cover letter should be included with every job application and should summarise your experience, why you think you?re right for the job and why you?d like to work for the company. Again, this should be tailored for each application and do a triple check before you hit send, is it correctly formatted throughout, have you properly addressed the employer, and is it spelt right?

Chocolate: A sweet method for stroke prevention in men?

Thursday, August 30, 2012

Eating a moderate amount of chocolate each week may be associated with a lower risk of stroke in men, according to a new study published in the August 29, 2012, online issue of Neurology?, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

"While other studies have looked at how chocolate may help cardiovascular health, this is the first of its kind study to find that chocolate, may be beneficial for reducing stroke in men," said study author Susanna C. Larsson, PhD, with the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.

For the study, 37,103 Swedish men ages 49 to 75 were given a food questionnaire that assessed how often they consumed various foods and drinks and were asked how often they had chocolate. Researchers then identified stroke cases through a hospital discharge registry. Over 10 years, there were 1,995 cases of first stroke.

Men in the study who ate the largest amount of chocolate, about one-third of a cup of chocolate chips (63 grams), had a lower risk of stroke compared to those who did not consume any chocolate. Those eating the highest amount of chocolate had a 17-percent lower risk of stroke, or 12 fewer strokes per 100,000 person-years compared to those who ate no chocolate. Person-years is the total number of years that each participant was under observation.

In a larger analysis of five studies that included 4,260 stroke cases, the risk of stroke for individuals in the highest category of chocolate consumption was 19 percent lower compared to non-chocolate consumers. For every increase in chocolate consumption of 50 grams per week, or about a quarter cup of chocolate chips, the risk of stroke decreased by about 14 percent.

"The beneficial effect of chocolate consumption on stroke may be related to the flavonoids in chocolate. Flavonoids appear to be protective against cardiovascular disease through antioxidant, anti-clotting and anti-inflammatory properties. It's also possible that flavonoids in chocolate may decrease blood concentrations of bad cholesterol and reduce blood pressure," said Larsson.

"Interestingly, dark chocolate has previously been associated with heart health benefits, but about 90 percent of the chocolate intake in Sweden, including what was consumed during our study, is milk chocolate," Larsson added.

IDC: Android-Crazy China Passes U.S. As Smartphone Leader, But India?s Growing The Fastest

android-china-248The latest figures out from IDC confirm that this is the year that China will overtake the U.S. as the world's biggest smartphone market, with its 25.5% share a significant lead over the U.S.'s 17.8%. The tipping point has been a long time coming: China is the world's most-populated country, so it was only a matter of time before it would overtake the U.S. But the trend has been accelerated in the last couple of years with the rise of cheap sub-$200 devices built on Android. But when it comes to growth, it's another booming Eastern economy that is leading the pack: India, which this year will only account for 2.5% of all smartphones shipped and sold, is growing at a rate of over 57% in the next several years: but that still will only give it an 8.5% share by 2016. IDC notes that India has one of the lowest smartphone penetration rates in the region.

Sandusky, 68, was convicted in June of sexually abusing 10 boys over a 15-year period. He is jailed awaiting sentencing and maintains his innocence.

Sandusky, given his age and the serious nature of the crimes of which he was convicted, is likely to receive a sentence that will keep him in prison for life. No sentencing date has been announced.

Pennsylvania law designates certain offenders as sexually violent predators if they are considered to have mental abnormalities or personality disorders that make them likely to engage in predatory sexually violent offenses.

If prosecutors pursue the sexually violent predator status and Sandusky opposes it, Judge John Cleland will decide whether it is merited.

A spokesman for the attorney general's office declined to comment on Thursday, and Sandusky defense attorney Joe Amendola did not return phone and email messages seeking comment.

Sexual Offenders Assessment Board spokesman Leo Dunn said the board does not comment on any case, but he noted it has never failed to complete an assessment within 90 days, as required. The judge ordered Sandusky's evaluation by the board on June 22, shortly after the jury verdict.

Dunn said such evaluations are assigned to an investigator, who then reports his or her findings to a board member. The board member produces an evaluation, which includes a recommendation.

Some sex offenders must register under the Pennsylvania Megan's Law for 10 years, but that requirement is lifelong for sexually violent predators, who must update their residences to the state police on a quarterly basis and prove they are participating in approved counseling.

Also, the chief law enforcement official in the community where a sexually violent predator lives is required to notify the public by producing a flier that bears the offender's name, address, photograph and offense.

Eight young men testified against Sandusky, describing a range of abuse that went from grooming and manipulation to fondling, oral sex and anal rape when they were boys and included acts that occurred inside Penn State team showers.

One young man testified his muffled screams from the basement of the Sandusky home in State College, where Penn State is based, went unanswered as Sandusky attacked him.

"He got real aggressive and just forced me into it," the 18-year-old testified. "And I just went with it ? there was no fighting against it."

Prosecutors said Sandusky used his status as a Penn State football icon and the charity for youth he founded, The Second Mile, to attract victims. He was arrested in November after a grand jury investigation that also led to charges of perjury and failure to report suspected abuse against university administrators Tim Curley and Gary Schultz. Those charges, which the men deny, have not gone to trial.

Hall of Fame football coach Joe Paterno was fired by the university's board of trustees days after Sandusky's arrest, and the scandal also cost university president Graham Spanier his job. Paterno died of lung cancer in January, while Spanier, who has not been charged with any crime, remains a tenured faculty member.

Syrian refugees support in-country "safe zone" Reuters Videos - 19 hrs ago

Syrian refugees at this Turkish camp are hopeful nations like Turkey will step in to help end Bashar al-Assad's rule. They support Turkey's proposal to create a so called "safe zone" in Syria, where citizens and rebels would be protected by foreign troops. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) SYRIAN REFUGEE, WALID, SAYING: "We are with Turkey, we support Turkey. All Syrian people are with Turkey and support their move for a safe zone. We ask the international community to set up a safe zone and a no fly zone." Turkey is already struggling to clothe and feed 80,000 refugees fleeing the violence, with thousands more arriving every day. On Tuesday, foreign minister Ahmet Davutoglu asked the United Nations to lay the foundations of a safe zone by building camps inside Syrian territory where people would be protected and provided for. However, in a rare tv interview, president Assad said such zones would be impractical and that the situation in Syria was, improving. More??

cat on a train 300x214 This Has to be the Most Trusting Cat Ever. Or Just Really Lazy [Video]I have grown up with cats all my life and one thing I have learned over the years is they can be very weary of people. Even if you?ve been with them forever and they should trust you, they may not fully.

Another thing I have learned is that they love to sit on everything. You know the phrase ?if I fitz, I sitz? ? I have found that to be very true for our cat friends and even after having my cats for 16 years, I am surprised by the weird places they will perch their butts.

Then, sometimes you get a perfect combination for a hilarious could-be viral video. You get a cat with an obvious case of ?cat-itude? and a big complex of the ?if I fitz, I sitz?. Not only that, but this cat has nerves that I know my cats would not have ? perhaps they trust their human friends more than my cats do me. One thing I know, my cats ? would never do this!

Scaled-Down: New Nano Device Can Weigh Single Molecules

A tiny resonating beam, just 10 millionths of a meter in length, can measure the mass of a molecule or nanoparticle in real time

Nanoscale device for weighing single moleculesWEIGHTY MATTERS: The diagonal beam in this image can detect the presence of single molecules and determine their mass. Image: Caltech/Scott Kelber and Michael Roukes

Dieters and exercise buffs might feel better about their progress if they tracked their weight loss in daltons. Even a short jog can help you shed a few septillion daltons, a unit of mass often used in biochemistry that is equivalent to the atomic mass unit. (Of course, no weight-conscious individual would want to know their full weight in this unit?the average American male weighs approximately 5 X 1028 daltons.)

Even the megadalton, or one million daltons, is a tiny unit of measure?a gold particle five nanometers across weighs in at just a few megadaltons. (One nanometer is a billionth of a meter.) But researchers at the California Institute of Technology and CEA?Leti, a government-funded research organization in Grenoble, France, have built a scale that weighs single objects even lighter than a megadalton, including nanoparticles and human antibody molecules. The device is the first of its kind to determine the masses of individual molecules and nanoparticles in real time, the researchers reported in a study published online August 26 in Nature Nanotechnology. (Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group.)

The heart of the device is a nanoelectromechanical resonator?a tiny beam of silicon vibrating at two tones simultaneously. "It's like vibrating a guitar string at the fundamental and a harmonic," says study co-author Michael Roukes, a Caltech physicist. "We're continuously strumming it with an electrostatic excitation." The beam runs diagonally across the photo (above); it measures 10 microns long and 300 nanometers wide. (A micron is one millionth of a meter.)

Tiny arms connecting the ends of the beam to the rest of the device convert the resonator's vibrations into an electrical signal via a phenomenon known as the piezoresistive effect. "The smallest pieces there are flexed slightly, and when they're flexed their resistance changes," Roukes says. "And so we can read out the motion as a change in resistance." A single molecule landing on the beam shifts the frequency of the two tones downward, and from the accompanying change in resistance the researchers can deduce both the mass of the particle and where it landed along the beam.

The device's sensitivity to single molecules allowed the researchers to perform mass spectroscopy?identifying the various particles in a mixture by their masses?on collections of gold nanoparticles five and 10 nanometers in diameter, as well as on the antibody molecule immunoglobulin M, which weighs just under one megadalton. (The natural molecules proved much more consistent in their construction than did the man-made nanoparticles, whose masses fluctuated by a factor of five or so from particle to particle.)

Roukes notes that past resonators were capable of measuring molecular masses, but only after hundreds of identical molecules had been deposited onto the beam. "We couldn't actually know molecule by molecule what their mass was," he says. The new, more sensitive version should allow researchers to perform mass spectroscopy to identify the various particles within a mixed sample. For instance, researchers could analyze a biological specimen to look for a telltale biomarker with a known mass. "If we can do it one by one, now we can start looking at arbitrarily complex mixtures of different things,? he says.

Syrian opposition group not up to job, says ex-member

UNITED NATIONS/ANKARA (Reuters) - The opposition Syrian National Council has failed to overcome internal divisions and is not up to the challenge of overthrowing President Bashar al-Assad, a prominent former member of the group has said.

Assad, in a rare television interview, said he would need more time to defeat the rebels and dismissed talk of a Western-imposed buffer zone on Syrian territory as unrealistic.

Basma Kodmani, who resigned from the Syrian National Council this week, said the group was not doing enough to back the increasingly violent 17-month-old revolt against the government in Damascus and needed to be replaced by a new political authority.

"My sense was that the SNC was not up to facing the increasing challenges on the ground and was not up to the performance I would have liked it to be," she told Reuters in a telephone interview from Paris on Wednesday.

Kodmani, one of the few women in the SNC, headed its foreign affairs bureau. The SNC was formed in Istanbul last year to guide a democratic transition if Assad fell but has been accused by some of being dominated by Islamists.

"The groups inside the council did not all behave as one in promoting one national project," Kodmani said. "Some have given too much attention to their own partisan agendas, some to their personal agendas sometimes. That resulted in a major weakness in connecting closely with the groups on the ground and providing the needed support in all forms."

In Syria, opposition activists reported air and ground bombardment by government forces in eastern neighborhoods of Damascus, which prompted thousands to flee the area.

The opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said around 100 people were killed on Wednesday, 29 of them government soldiers. So far the war has claimed more than 18,000 lives, according to the United Nations.

Turkey, already host to tens of thousands of refugees fleeing the fighting, urged the United Nations to protect displaced Syrians inside their country.

Ankara fears a mass influx such as the flight of half a million Iraqi Kurds into Turkey after the 1991 Gulf War, and has floated the idea of a "safe zone" under foreign protection within Syria for civilians fleeing intensifying violence.

"We expect the United Nations to engage on the topic of protecting refugees inside Syria and if possible sheltering them in camps there," Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said.

France supports Turkey's call for a safe zone in Syria, and pressure for action increased after the U.N. refugee agency said that Syria's exodus was accelerating. Up to 200,000 people could settle in Turkey if the conflict worsens, the UNHCR said.

INTERNATIONAL PROBLEM

Davutoglu said refugee flows in the hundreds of thousands constituted a dangerous international problem.

But the United States and its allies have shown little enthusiasm for providing the military and aerial support to police a no-fly zone which Turkey's proposal would require.

Assad, in his first television interview since a bomb attack killed four of his top security officials on July 18, brushed off the idea of international intervention.

"I believe that talk about a buffer zone is not practical, even for those countries which are playing a hostile role (against Syria)," he said, according to an interview with Syria's Addounia TV broadcast on Wednesday.

He also ridiculed Turkey, which once cultivated good relations with Assad but turned against him over his violent response to the uprising.

"Will we go backwards because of the ignorance of some Turkish officials?" Assad said.

"Turkey bears direct responsibility for the blood being shed in Syria," the Syrian leader said.

Turkey already hosts more than 80,000 refugees and the UNHCR said up to 5,000 people a day had arrived there in the last two weeks. The refugee flow to Jordan has also doubled, it said.

Davutoglu spoke ahead of a U.N. Security Council meeting of foreign ministers expected to focus on Ankara's proposal.

"We are studying the issue of buffer zones," said French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, who will chair Thursday's meeting in New York, acknowledging the issue was "complicated".

A French diplomatic source said establishing a buffer zone would be difficult because a U.N. resolution would be needed to set up a no-fly zone - impossible given Russian and Chinese reluctance to move against Assad.

Iran said it would form a team with other non-aligned countries to explore solutions to the crisis in Syria.

Tehran says the 120-nation Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit, which it is currently hosting, proves U.S. efforts to isolate it over its nuclear program and support for Assad have failed.

"At a time when many other international organizations have gotten involved in the Syria issue, it's not right that the Non-Aligned Movement take a back seat," Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi told a news conference on Wednesday.

Work From Home Jobs In NJ - Small Business Market

While unemployment rates are beginning to improve in the U.S., turning around the economy from the recession has been challenging to say the least. There are still many that cannot find work in their chosen profession and as a result they can become desperate for work. This often leads to checking online for Work From Home Jobs In NJ, but out of this desperation people can get sucked into scams and this is where research helps.

What does working from home involve?

If you want to work from home, realize that a legitimate telecommuting job requires the same amount of work as if you were working in an office building. In other words, you cannot sit around all day and work an hour a day and expect that to ear a full time income. You must work hard and be disciplined with your time because if you do not manage your time well, you will not make much money. The basic tools you?ll need include a phone, Internet access, and and a fast computer.

Spotting an online scam

There are plenty of real Work From Home Jobs In NJ, but there are still online scams and there are quick ways to identify these. Look for signs such as:

  • Sounds too good to be true ? if the company is promising that you can make a lot of money but working very little, it is most likely a scam
  • If the company or website asks you to send money to them to ?cover? administrative fees, it is a scam. A real work at home job is going to pay you ? not the other way around. Never send money to a supposed ?job? asking for money.
  • Avoid answering ads that pertain to a company sending checks to you to deposit in your bank account and immediately send funds to someone else. The checks they send are not real and you?ll end up owing your bank for the funds you withdrew. These scams often have ?fancy job titles?

Using online forums for guidance

Philippines business process outsourcing activities | Tempo - News ...

Manila, Philippines ? THE report that the United States has rejected an anti-outsourcing bill comes as a welcome development for the Philippine business process outsourcing (BPO) industry. It is a win-win proposition for both Philippine and American companies. Outsourcing business services to the Philippines helps make American companies more competitive and profitable, says the Business Process Association of the Philippines (BPAP), the umbrella association for the information technology (IT)-BPO, serving as one-stop information and advocacy gateway for the industry.

Citing studies, BPAP said ?outsourcing has little impact on job losses; instead, outsourcing can free up resources to create more jobs at home.? A study of the hiring practices of 2,500 US multinationals showed that for every job outsourced, nearly two new jobs are created in the US.

The IT-BPO industry in the Philippines has had robust growth; it recorded $11 billion investments and increased 638,000 jobs in 2011, on track to meet its fiveyear target of generating $25 billion revenues by 2016. This year, the goal is to produce 126,000 new jobs and generate $2 billion in extra revenue.

The Philippines holds a major portion of global outsourcing market, due to the English proficiency of Filipinos. Call centers in the Philippines count among its clients several giant multinationals. Pharmaceutical firms outsource their medical transcriptions in the country. The government offers tax incentives to BPO firms, including value-added tax and income tax exemption.

We wish the Officials of the Philippines Government, headed by President Benigno S. Aquino III and Vice President Jejomar C. Binay, Department of Science and Technology Secretary Mario D. Montejo, Department of Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda D. Baldoz, and Business Processing Association of the Philippines Chief Executive Officer Benedict C. Hernandez, all the best and success in all their endeavors. CONGRATULATIONS AND MABUHAY!

Stocks edge up after US growth revised higher

NEW YORK (AP) ? Slightly better economic growth and stronger housing sales nudged the stock market higher Wednesday.

The Dow Jones industrial average edged up six points to 13,110 shortly after noon EDT.

Major indexes opened slightly higher after the government said the economy grew at a quicker pace in the spring than first thought.

The U.S. economy expanded at a 1.7 percent annual rate from April through June thanks to rising consumer spending and exports. That's an improvement from the initial estimate of 1.5 percent, but not enough to put a dent in the unemployment rate.

The National Association of Realtors said its index of sales for previously owned homes increased 2.4 percent in July, reaching its highest level since April 2010, the last month buyers could qualify for a federal tax credit.

"It's a mixed message overall," said JJ Kinahan, chief derivatives strategist at TD Ameritrade. "We all know we need 2 percent (economic) growth. And you can't continue to improve on housing if the unemployment picture doesn't improve. At some point, the numbers have to match."

In other trading, the Standard & Poor's 500 index added one point to 1,410, while the Nasdaq composite index inched up three points to 3,080.

Crude oil dipped 1.5 percent to $94.87. Hurricane Isaac made landfall Tuesday night, but its heavy winds and rain aren't expected to cause extensive damage to oil production and refinery operations in the Gulf of Mexico.

Markets have slipped into a late-summer lull. Indexes have barely budged amid some of thinnest trading days this year. For the week, the S&P 500 index is down one point.

Just 7.7 billion shares were traded on the New York Stock Exchange over the previous three days, the slowest three-day stretch since December 2011, according to FactSet data. One measure of stock-market volatility, the Vix, recently sank to a five-year low.

Kinahan said the market's apparent lack of direction makes sense, especially ahead of the Labor Day weekend and a highly anticipated speech by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke on Friday.

"There's no incentive to take a big trading position," he said. "Many people I know plan on taking a three-day weekend or are just coming in for the speech to see if (Bernanke) says anything interesting or market-moving. If not, they're outta there."

A handful of companies reported earnings Wednesday. H.J. Heinz posted a 14 percent jump in quarterly net income, driven by higher prices and emerging-market sales. The clothing-store chain Jos A. Bank posted stronger sales and revenue than Wall Street expected, and its stock soared $7.10 to $48.73.

Among other stocks making big moves:

? Joy Global sank 1 percent. The supplier of coal mining equipment reported results early Wednesday that missed analysts' estimates and also cut its full-year earnings outlook as demand for coal in the U.S. and China slows. The company's stock lost 35 cents to $52.75.

? Sealed Air Corp. jumped 8 percent, the S&P 500's biggest gain, after the food packaging company said a former Dow Chemical executive would take over when its current CEO retires. The former Dow executive has experience with mergers, and Sealed Air bought a cleaning and sanitation company last year. The company's stock gained $1 to an even $14.

Vitamin B3 may offer new tool in fight against 'superbugs'

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

A new study suggests that nicotinamide, more commonly known as vitamin B3, may be able to combat some of the antibiotic-resistance staph infections that are increasingly common around the world, have killed thousands and can pose a significant threat to public health.

The research found that high doses of this vitamin increased by 1,000 times the ability of immune cells to kill staph bacteria. The work was done both in laboratory animals and with human blood.

The findings were published today in the Journal of Clinical Investigation by researchers from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, UCLA, and other institutions. The research was supported by several grants from the National Institutes of Health.

The work may offer a new avenue of attack against the growing number of "superbugs."

"This is potentially very significant, although we still need to do human studies," said Adrian Gombart, an associate professor in OSU's Linus Pauling Institute. "Antibiotics are wonder drugs, but they face increasing problems with resistance by various types of bacteria, especially Staphylococcus aureus.

"This could give us a new way to treat staph infections that can be deadly, and might be used in combination with current antibiotics," Gombart said. "It's a way to tap into the power of the innate immune system and stimulate it to provide a more powerful and natural immune response."

The scientists found that clinical doses of nicotinamide increased the numbers and efficacy of "neutrophils," a specialized type of white blood cell that can kill and eat harmful bacteria.

The nicotinamide was given at megadose, or therapeutic levels, far beyond what any normal diet would provide - but nonetheless in amounts that have already been used safely in humans, as a drug, for other medical purposes.

However, there is no evidence yet that normal diets or conventional-strength supplements of vitamin B3 would have any beneficial effect in preventing or treating bacterial infection, Gombart said, and people should not start taking high doses of the vitamin.

Gombart has been studying some of these issues for more than a decade, and discovered 10 years ago a human genetic mutation that makes people more vulnerable to bacterial infections. In continued work on the genetic underpinnings of this problem, researchers found that nicotinamide had the ability to "turn on" certain antimicrobial genes that greatly increase the ability of immune cells to kill bacteria.

One of the most common and serious of the staph infections, called methicillin-resistant S. aureus, or MRSA, was part of this study. It can cause serious and life-threatening illness, and researchers say the widespread use of antibiotics has helped increase the emergence and spread of this bacterial pathogen.

Dr. George Liu, an infectious disease expert at Cedars-Sinai and co-senior author on the study, said that "this vitamin is surprisingly effective in fighting off and protecting against one of today's most concerning public health threats." Such approaches could help reduce dependence on antibiotics, he said.

Co-first authors Pierre Kyme and Nils Thoennissen found that when used in human blood, clinical doses of vitamin B3 appeared to wipe out the staph infection in only a few hours.

Serious staph infections, such as those caused by MRSA, are increasingly prevalent in hospitals and nursing homes, but are also on the rise in prisons, the military, among athletes, and in other settings where many people come into close contact.

Health Insurance Costs Skyrocket For College Students Due To ...

Can we stop calling ObamaCare the Affordable Care Act now?

A Young America?s Foundation activist forwarded an email from the Vice President for Finance at his school, Guilford College (Greensboro, NC), informing him that, ?For the 2012-13 academic year, the annual cost of the student health insurance is increasing from $668 to $1,179. This insurance premium has been charged to your student account.?

Why the increase? ?Our student health insurance policy premium has been substantially increased due to changes required by federal regulations issued on March 16, 2012 under the Affordable Care Act.?
