Grand Junction Allowing Pigeons As Pets ? CBS Denver

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) ? These pigeons are not the ones dragged in by the cat or picking at the garden. These pigeons are trained athletes on high-protein diets that fly up to 500 miles in a day to find their way home.

?People don?t realize how important they still are,? local pigeon racer and farmer Jerry Donaldson recently told the Grand Junction City Council while explaining the history of carrier pigeons used in the military and noting that some have even received medals of honor. ?They are hero pigeons.?

Donaldson is part of a passionate local club that participates in the longtime, worldwide sport of pigeon racing ? a group city officials only discovered after an update of the city?s land-use code in 2010.

At the time, council members did away with allowing pigeon racing, thinking it was obsolete.

But at the request of the community, the ordinance was researched and brought back before the council. Councilors voted 6-1 to allow racing pigeons within the city under certain conditions.

Councilor Bennett Boeschenstein cast the dissenting vote, saying he believes the birds should be allowed only in rural areas.

City officials said the ordinance provides clear standards so the animals will not become a nuisance to neighbors or the community. It allows for up to 50 performing birds on a half-acre of property or less and a maximum of 100 birds on larger properties.

Before voting, council members, who had received thousands of emails in opposition of the ordinance believed to be from addresses around the country in a campaign sponsored by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, asked about the birds? homes, humane treatment, feces and noise.

Steven Bowen, show chairman with the Grand Junction Racing Pigeon Club, tried to address those concerns.

?The noise level, you can sit in your backyard and have a normal conversation,? said Bowen. He also said the birds eat well and exercise in the morning and evening, and their feces are properly disposed.

?They don?t do us any good if they?re not coming home,? he said.

A racing pigeon is banded before it?s seven days old with a number it will be known by for the rest of its life. Then, when it is ready to race, it is clocked into the club Friday night before being driven up to hundreds of miles from Grand Junction, sometimes starting as far away as Montana.

?It?s just like scanning in the grocery store,? explained Bowen, who has been working with pigeons since he was 8 and is now teaching his granddaughter about them.

The performers are turned loose together, he said. They often fly overnight, and their times are calculated when they return.

?Then we go out and see who gets braggin? rights for the weekend,? he told the council.

Councilman Jim Doody, who said he hunts, eats fowl and shoots pigeons, voiced his support and said he is impressed with the microchip technology.

?This is western Colorado. This is what we do,? he said. ?It?s a sport, and it?s a great sport you can raise your kids on.?

Jason Carey, 10, and Colton Carey, 8, are two of those children enjoying it. They came to the meeting to show their support for Thrill Patch, Jet Li and other colorfully named ?ninja? pigeons they help care for.

?I like being able to feed them out of my hand,? Jason said.

Colton added that he likes ?getting them to come home.?

Is The Money-Laundering Driven Real Estate "Boom" Ending ...

One by one all the money-laundering loopholes in a broke world are coming to an end.

First it was Swiss bank accounts, which for centuries guaranteed the depositors absolute secrecy, and as a result saw money inflows from all the wealthiest savers in the world, who felt truly safe their wealth (obtained by legal means or otherwise) would not be redistributed forcefully. In the ecosystem of finance, Switzerland was the depositor bank. Then 2008 happened, and starting with the US, shortly to be followed by every other insolvent country, demands were issued for a full list of people who had used Zurich and Geneva bank vaults to avoid the risk of asset taxation, capital controls and confiscation on their own native soil. The result was the end of the Swiss banking sector as the ultimate target of all global money laundering. In the ensuing power vacuum, others have sprung up to take its place, most notably Singapore, but its days as a tax-haven are numbered by how long it takes China to fall face first into a hard landing at which point no saving on the Pacific seaboard will be safe.

Now, it is the turn of real estate.

While hardly a secret, for decades the ultra-luxury housing segment in any country was the target not so much of local wealthy individuals and business, but foreigners, for whom the grass was always greener, and sought to put their money into "hard assets" abroad to save it from local confiscation. After all, it is far easier to be sued and prosecuted by your own government than a foreign one. Two very vivid examples are the most expensive house in Miami ever sold, which two months ago fetched a price of $47 million, which was purchased by "a Russian who bought the home in the name of a U.S.-based limited-liability company" and in the until recently a record $88 million paid for a 15 CPW penthouse for the daughter of Russian billionaire, Dmitry Rybolovlev (bought from Citi's Sandy "End TBTF" Weill). The record was topped at $90 million paid for a One57 duplex apartment paid by an unknown individual, almost certainly a foreigner.

The common theme here of course is that foreigners come to the US (or London, or Geneva, or Hong Kong) or any other wealthy megapolis with their almost always ill-gotten, and untaxed gains, spend the money indiscriminately on local real estate even as the local authorities look the other way because by lifting any offer, these foreigners, while laundering illegal money, are also keeping the all important housing market afloat thus perpetuing the illusion that the domestic economic is rising. Instead all that is happening is it is attracting illegal foreign capital flows.

The biggest beneficiary so fas has been the US, which in the past 2 years has seen not one but four housing markets develop, as we have showed before.

And while the lower-end segment has continued to implode (see Foreclosure Stuffing), it is the ultra-luxury part of US housing that has bootstrapped the housing market.

For now. Because if London is any indication, global ultra-luxury real estate market is the next "Swiss bank account."

What happened in London? The NYT explains:

At the request of the Athens government, the British financial authorities recently handed over a detailed list of about 400 Greek individuals who have bought and sold London properties since 2009.

?

The list, closely guarded, has not been publicly disclosed. But Greek officials are examining it to determine whether the people named ? who they say include prominent businessmen, bankers, shipping tycoons and professional athletes ? have deceived the tax authorities by understating their wealth.

?

?These people have money and they are known ? but it is not clear yet if they have violated any laws,? said Haris Theoharis, an official in the Greek Finance Ministry. Tax investigators have been examining the list to see whether there is any overlap between those who bought London properties and those already identified as being tax cheats.

What a broke Greece will find without a doubt, is that of the 400 Greeks who spent millions on London real estate, virtually none paid any taxes in previous years. Also, they most certainly declared zero offshore real estate. After all why should they: until this moment foreign real estate was the default mode of funneling capital into safe destinations.

Alas, as the Swiss banking SNAFU showed, in the New Normal, nothing can be taken for granted any more. First it is Greek demands for London real estate transparency. Next it will be Putin asking Geneva and Vienna to point out which Russian oligarchs bought real estate there, then Mariano Rajoy, as broke as Greece, will ask for a list of all Spaniards buying real estate in London and Geneva. Until finally, someone returns the favor to Uncle Sam, who was the first to blow up the myth of Swiss bank secrecy, and requests a list of all broke European buying real estate anywhere between New York to Los Angeles.

What happens then? Well, as we have been writing for months, for now the NAR, best known for misrepresenting the real state of the existing US housing market for years, has an open waiver for anti-money laundering regulation from none other than Uncle Sam. Because while it is one thing to blow up the biggest breadwinning industry in Switzerland to pad the tax bill and to spread class warfare, it is something totally different to represent to the world that ultra-luxury segment aside, which is merely an artifact of global money laundering, the US real estate housing emperor is as naked as he was 4 years ago.

As a reminder, here is where the NAR stands on the issue of its most generous clients possibly being some of the worst criminals known to man, courtesy of Elanus Capital:

Many of you reading this will undoubtedly have spent time in an international bank and been forced to sit through countless hours of ?know your client? and AML training. Fascinating to note that the National Association of Realtors lobbied for and received a waiver from such regulation. That?s right, realtors actually went to the U.S. government and said: we want to be able to help foreign business oligarchs and other nefarious business people launder money through the real estate markets of the United States ? and prevailed.

?

Here's their official position:

?

"NAR supports continued efforts to combat money laundering and the financing of terrorism through the regulation of entities using a risk-based analysis. Any risk-based assessment would likely find very little risk of money laundering involving real estate agents or brokers. Regulations that would require real estate agents and brokers to adopt anti-money laundering programs may prove to be burdensome and unnecessary given the existing ML/TF regulations that already apply to United States financial institutions."

?

Hat?s off to the NAR ? that is some serious doublespeak. My translation: We?ll support you as long as we don?t have to support you.

Indeed it is. What the NAR is saying is that for now go ahead and lift every offer on every duplex and triplex off Central Park. Your money is absolutely safe with us... this instant. But the second a broke Europe comes demanding reparations for endorsing 4 more years of Obama (something that was already documented), for destroying the Swiss banking industry, and for keeping the EUR much higher than it would have been had it not been the Chairman's 5 easing episodes, all bets are off.

This means all European, Asian, and even local oligarchs may be sweating just a little bit, now that the winds have shifted, and suddenly what was considered safe and untouchable, has become fair game in the great "fairness" redistribution scheme that is the only game left in a broke and insolvent global town.

NFL refs approve deal, ready for Sunday games

IRVING, Texas (AP) ? NFL officials ended their labor dispute with the league by approving a new eight-year contract with a 112-5 vote Saturday, then hustled off to the airport to get to work.

Next stop, stadiums around the country.

And, the officials hope, anonymity.

"The last Super Bowl that I worked, when we got in the locker room, I said, 'You know, the best thing about this game, nobody will remember who refereed this game,'" said Scott Green, president of the referees' association. "That's how we like to work."

The vote ended a labor spat that created three weeks of increasingly chaotic games run by replacement officials who drew criticism of everyone from the average fan to President Barack Obama.

"It was pretty much 'Come on in and vote,'" Green said. "We're going to talk football now. We're going to stop talking about CBAs and lockouts and now we're going to talk about rules and video and getting ourselves ready to work football games."

They may get ovations similar to the one bestowed on the crew that worked Thursday's Cleveland-Baltimore game with the tentative deal in place.

The referees met for about an hour and a half Friday night to go over the contract, then gathered for another 30 minutes Saturday morning before approving the contract.

"We are obviously pleased to hear it," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in an email to The Associated Press on Saturday.

Because they were aware of the financial parameters, most of the discussion by the referees involved non-economic issues such as year-round work and developmental squads, said Tim Millis, the association's executive director.

The deal came together quickly this week after an increasing chorus of complaints became impossible to ignore when a disputed touchdown call on the final play gave the Seattle Seahawks a victory over the Green Bay Packers on national television Monday night.

Many thought the ruling of a Seattle touchdown instead of a Green Bay interception was botched, and the labor dispute drew public comments from Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

By late Wednesday, the sides had a contract calling for refs' salaries to increase from an average of $149,000 a year in 2011 to $173,000 in 2013, rising to $205,000 by 2019. The current defined benefit pension plan will remain in place for current officials through the 2016 season or until the official earns 20 years' service.

The defined benefit plan will then be frozen. Retirement benefits will be provided for new hires, and for all officials beginning in 2017, through a defined contribution.

Beginning with the 2013 season, the NFL will have the option to hire a number of officials to work year-round. The NFL also can retain additional officials for training and development and assign those officials to work games. The number of additional officials will be determined by the league.

The officials that worked Thursday's Ravens-Browns game were cheered from the moment they walked onto the field. The difference between the regular crew and replacements was clear. The officials kept the game in control, curtailing the chippy play and choppy pace that had marred the first three weeks of the regular season.

"I think the thing we're most proud of is the lesson that we all learned," Green said. "If you're going to be in a professional league, you've got top-notch coaches, you need professional officials as well."

Guantanamo detainee sent to Canada

Terrorism suspect Omar Khadr will finish his sentence in a maximum security prison in Canada.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Guantanamo detainee Omar Khadr is transported back to Canada
  • He pleaded guilty to murder and other charges under a plea deal in 2010
  • He admitted throwing a grenade that killed a U.S. soldier in 2002

Ottawa, Canada (CNN) -- Guantanamo detainee Omar Khadr has been transferred to his homeland of Canada to serve the remainder of his sentence, Canada's Public Safety Minister Vic Toews said Saturday.

Khadr boarded a military plane at the Guantanamo Naval base in Cuba and arrived at a military airbase in Trenton, Ontario. He will serve the rest of his sentence at Millhaven Prison in Bath, Ontario, about 130 miles east of Toronto.

The case and the prisoner's legal fate have sparked controversy among Canadians. Many think his sentence has been too lenient. Others, noting his capture at age 15, think he should have been treated as a child soldier and point to alleged mistreatment while in custody.

Under a plea deal with military prosecutors in October 2010, Khadr admitted to throwing a grenade during a 2002 firefight in Afghanistan that killed Sgt. First Class Christopher Speer, a member a U.S. Army Special Forces Unit.

Youngest Gitmo detainee pleads guilty

He pleaded guilty to murder, attempted murder, providing material support for terrorism, spying and conspiracy.

"This transfer occurs following a process initiated by the United States government and determined in accordance with Canadian law," Toews said.

"I am satisfied the Correctional Service of Canada can administer Omar Khadr's sentence in a manner which recognizes the serious nature of the crimes that he has committed and ensure the safety of Canadians is protected during incarceration," he said, adding that the Canadian government would have no say in parole proceedings.

Khadr statement says he was happy U.S. soldier died in attack

As part the plea deal, Khadr received an eight-year sentence with no credit for time served. Khadr's lawyers say Khadr agreed to the plea deal under the condition that he would serve most of the sentence in Canada.

Khadr's lawyers say the transfer was delayed for months as the Canadian government seemed to drag its feet.

Earlier this year, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told CNN that Khadr's repatriation would mark a significant step forward in eventually closing Guantanamo.

Two senior Obama administration officials said it took about a year to work out arrangements with Canadians for the transfer.

Negotiations were a very long and complicated process, and there were extensive conversations with Canadians, one of the officials said.

There were a lot of legal hurdles on the U.S. side and clearly hesitation on the part of Canadian government to do this because the public is polarized about Khadr, the official said.

Khadr was the only remaining Western detainee at Guantanamo.

His repatriation in Canada is highly controversial, due in large part to the views held by his family members. His father, Ahmed Khadr was a close associate of Osama Bin Laden and openly said he believed it was his Islamic duty to train his children in jihad.

Human rights groups around the world have denounced Khadr's capture at the age of 15 and his 10-year detention at Guantanamo.

"Given the Obama administration's glacial pace towards closing the U.S.-controlled detention center, little and late though it is, today's news represents progress," Amnesty International USA's Executive Director Suzanne Nossel said in a statement.

Canada should conduct a full investigation into Khadr's allegations of torture and "remedy for the human rights violations he suffered," she said.

The Pentagon said that currently 166 detainees remain in detention at Guantanamo Bay.

Guantanamo still a blight on U.S. record?

Flyy Friday: Lotus Love Beauty Product Line | For Colored Gurls

Nikia Pope, one of our fabulous guest bloggers, has decided to get on the path to making her dreams a reality: She is starting her own business.

She transitioned from permed to natural hair in June 2011, and with that transition, Nikia?s interest in natural hair care and natural skincare products peeked in a major way. Because she was so intrigued by this transition, Nikia began to make all her own hair and skincare products. So, her passion project,?Lotus Love, was born! Check out FCG?s interview with her below to learn about this up-and-coming line:

Why did you create Lotus Love Beauty Product Line?
I have been a part of the post-college time for a year+, and like most of my fellow graduates, I am feeling the brunt of not being able to find employment, which can be so discouraging and can also take a toll on you. But instead of choosing defeat, I chose faith, faith that God was continuously working behind the scenes on my behalf, lining up things for me. I had applied to several jobs, some of which I knew I was supposed to have, yet I didn?t get them. I took that as a sign from God that He had something better for me, He revealed to me that I was supposed to be a business owner; you know, taking my destiny into my own hands. I shuddered at the thought first, but over this last year, God has constantly been building me up, equipping me with the necessary tools that I need to succeed. Most importantly, He has been working on me internally, for I believe that that is where most of the work is needed in any person, versus the external, which so many people focus on. Your external is a reflection of your internal. So you have to get your inside right, first. Helping me to narrow and focus my priorities, working on my self-esteem and my self-worth, building my confidence and helping me to eliminate FEAR, once I had addressed all those defeating thoughts, habits and issues, I had a peace inside about me that simply said, ?It?s time, GO,? and I have proceeded to move forward. I won?t look back.

Originally,?Lotus Love?was going to be called something else. I had to come up with a name that I was totally in love with, and after filing paperwork with the Secretary of State office, I was informed that the name had already been registered in the state of Georgia. I was crushed. Devastation set in. I was discouraged. This was what I wanted. But God, He had something better in mind for me. I went into prayer about it and asked God to direct me to what was for me. One day, while reading Queen Afua?s?Sacred Woman book, it was a paragraph that described the original Lotus People, which are black people. It read: ?We are the original Lotus People, sweet, beautiful, illuminating, spiritual, and compassionate. A being a pure light who evolves out of the mud of challenge, where the lotus seed is fertilized, and grows upward to blossom into a wondrously beautiful soul of light.??I paused. This was me, this is who I am. How could a person who doesn?t know me personally speak to the core of who I am, in just a few words? It was powerful. I had peace about it. I knew that this was the answer to my prayer. I knew that anything I created was going to be a labor of love for me, and ultimately, I want to spread and share more love, that?s what fuels me. There you have, LotusLove.

How did you become interested in beauty and beauty products?
My interest in creating beauty products developed out of a desire for affordability. Since I was a newly natural, I wanted to experiment with products, and trust me when I tell you that natural hair care is NOT cheap. I started watching videos and reading the ingredients on the back of the products I was using, and I noticed a lot of common ingredients in the products. I researched each ingredient and proceeded to buy all the common ingredients, and I headed for the kitchen; the love affair had begun. I also wanted to be in control of what I was putting on my body. I started discovering that a lot of things I was using had a lot of harmful chemicals in them, so I threw them all out and got to mixing.

What kind of products will your provide?
Lotus Love will provide products for hair, skin, bath and even babies, something for everybody.

I have been creating products for one year now, testing everything out on myself and my family and friends. They are happy guinea pigs (can you say free products?). My favorite to make is my shea butter whip and my lavender liquid black soap; they are simply divine.

What do you think makes your product line unique?
I think that my uniqueness comes from the fact that I grow a lot of the herbs I use in my own garden. I only create products that I would actually use, testing all the products on my own body.

How is your beauty regimen reflected in LotusLove?
I only use products that I create on my own skin. I wanted products that were going to aid in the overall health of my body, as well as treat any issues I was having with either my face, skin or health. I wanted to feel good about the products I was using, and after much research, I came to the conclusion that many popular products out did not do that; they had all these ingredients inside them that I couldn?t even pronounce. (I am sure that a lot of women have had that moment, when you are trying to sound out those big, obnoxious words listed under ingredients. Lol if you haven?t, go and look at the back of any products that you use regularly). Then, I had an A-ha moment, ?Why am I using products with ingredients that I can?t even pronounce?? Doesn?t make much sense, so I stopped. A lot of the products I previously used left my skin feeling so dry, tight and un-moisturized, I actually felt like my skin was stressed. I was spending all this money on these products, and I was not satisfied with the results. It was a no-brainer: Stop using them. Now, in the absence of these products, I had to use something, but what? And this is how I started creating my own products. Who knew better than me what I was looking for in a product? A year later, my skin is the BEST it has ever been; I get compliments on my skin every single day, confirmation that I made the right choice.

Who and what inspires you?
Life inspires me.

There is no golden answer to the question, ?What inspires you?? I find inspiration in more things than I can count. Inspiration comes to me in so many different ways from people to nature. I am in a constant state of inspiration. Life inspires me; the mere fact that I woke up today inspires me and fuels me to be better, create better, think better, live better. Even if today isn?t perfect, I know that today has purpose. I am inspired by people who live life on their own terms, and go get the very things they pray for. I am the most inspired by strong, black women who are defying the odds and stereotypes every day, including you, Jamie.

Why do you think people should contribute to your business project?
I am following my intuition and my dreams. It takes guts and bravery to go after what you want. Sacrificing who I am for what I shall be. My ultimate goal is to be able to provide employment for others; I believe in giving more than receiving. This business project is an extension of who I am?come share with me.

What advice do you have for young women who may need courage in pursuing their dreams?
Get alone with God and see His purpose for your life; your dreams should always align with your purpose, morals and values. Be careful who you share your dreams with because there are a lot of undercover dream killers out there, not wanting you to achieve your dreams because they were too chicken shxt to pursue their own; they let fear consume them. It would be easy because you have stretched in ways you have never imagined, you will be tested to see if you want it as bad as you say you do.

Always remember that your actions should align with what you speak. Each day, dedicate some time, even if it?s 30 minutes, to pursuing your dreams, [and] before you know it, it will be tangible. Know that anything worth having requires hard work. Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life that you have imagined for so long; it is very possible if you believe. You must FIRST see it to believe it. A goal is an intellectual concept ? can you see it? Cause if you can?t see it within, then you?re never going to accomplish it. What?s your vision? The vision will pull you forward. The goal will keep you busy.

Your donations to Nikia?s Lotus Love campaign will go toward business registration, jars, bottles, branding and marketing and more! Learn more about the campaign and contribute here.?

Maldives

Talk about spoiling the mood: If you?re going to the Maldives for a romantic getaway, the islands? deposed president has a great suggestion for you: Settle into your hotel room, then watch his trial on TV.

Depending on whom you ask, Mohamed Nasheed either stepped down, or was ousted, from office earlier this year. Either way, he is now facing charges of abusing his power and will be tried by what he calls a ?kangaroo court.?

The former prez says that tourists should know that some luxury resorts may have backed his coup after he had hoped to market the islands?which has long attracted both honeymooners and A-list guests such as Tom Cruise, Jennifer Aniston and Mick Jagger?to more middle-income travelers.

While normally we wouldn't advise holing up with the telly during an island getaway, this trial could have compelling entertainment value, kangaroos notwithstanding, thanks to the colorful Nasheed. While still in power, for instance, Nasheed once held a cabinet meeting underwater, to call attention to climate change.? Today, he?s also concerned that the current administration wants to do away with kissing on beaches. "We grew up kissing each other on the beach," he told reporters, "so it seems strange that our children won't be allowed to do it." Strange indeed.

Future French President: ?Anti-White Racism Spreading Through France?

Here we go.

Jean-Fran?ois Cop?, the man who wants to succeed ex-president Nicolas Sarkozy at the head of France?s main right-wing party has caused a furore with a claim that ?anti-white racism? is spreading through the country?s towns and cities.

?An ?anti-white racism? is developing in neighbourhoods of our towns where individuals ? some of whom have French nationality ? express contempt for French people, calling them ?Gaulois?, on the basis that they are not of the same religion, the same skin colour or the same origins as them,? he writes.

Claiming that he is ?breaking a taboo?, Cop? adds that ?this racism is as unacceptable as every other form of racism ? we must denounce it as we condemn all other forms of discrimination?.

?Cop? can?t make his mind up whether to be the spitting image of Sarkozy or the parrot of Marine Le Pen,? tweeted the newly appointed leader of the Socialist Party, Harlem D?sir, who started his political career at the head of the anti-racism campaign SOS-racisme.

Who?s Harlem D?sir? Well he?s as French as burning cars and hip-hop. Also he served 18 months in prison for fraud related to an immigrants rights group he was with.

?The ?anti-white racism? is manifested according to Cop? ?by the fact that there are areas where it is not good to be a woman, be white? some of our countrymen to flee the area where they live because they understand that they are not at home, it is unbearable,? he said.

Here is a more complete quote from the book.

Since this woman that feels like a stranger in this neighborhood where she lived for many years. An ?anti-White? attitude develops in the neighborhoods of our cities where individuals ? some of whom have French nationality ? despise the French called ?Gauls?, on the pretext that they do not have the same religion, the same skin color or the same origins as themselves.

I hear more and more people complain of Meaux and this racism is as unacceptable as any other form of racism and we must denounce it as we condemn all other discrimination. I know I broke a taboo by using the term ?anti-white? but I do deliberately, because it is the truth that some of our citizens live this way and silence exacerbates the trauma.

These phenomena are impossible to see from Paris, in the media and political spheres where the vast majority of officers are French of white skin born of French parents. In these microcosms, the lack of diversity limits the presence of people of color or of foreign origin. But let?s face it: the situation is reversed in many parts of our suburbs.

The Morning Orange: Baseball wafts (a bit) in the heart (Henderson's) of the Syracuse football season

Syracuse, N.Y. -- The Syracuse University football team is fully one-third of its way through the regular season. With Pittsburgh due in the Carrier Dome in six days, the start of the Orange?s Big East Conference campaign looms. There is much work to be done between now and the earning of any bowl-game berth.

But still . . .

Have you seen what?s going on in the American League? There are five playoff berths available in that thing, and there are just five games left for each of the contenders . . . and nothing has been decided.

Texas (92-65) . . . New York (91-66) . . . Baltimore (90-67) . . . Oakland (88-68) . . . Los Angeles (87-70) . . . Tampa Bay (86-71) . . . Detroit (84-73) . . . Chicago (83-74). On this last weekend of September, all eight of those towns -- and the AL clubs that play in them -- are still very much alive. Which means, if you recall what the St. Louis Cardinals did a year ago, that each is still in position to land in the World Series.

? MLB scoreboard, schedule | ? MLB standings

So, what does any of this have to do with Syracuse football? Perhaps only this: One of Doug Marrone?s assistants who has actually allowed himself an interest in something beyond Xs and Os is keeping tabs.

Uh huh. Donnie Henderson, SU?s defensive backs coach, is a baseball guy. And as he grew up in southern California playing the game with Ozzie Smith and Eddie Murray -- both of whom would eventually wend their way into the Baseball Hall of Fame -- perhaps he can?t be blamed.

So, he is a fan. And as he does work for a man, Marrone, who played baseball, himself, in high school and remains a devotee of the Yankees, he may be fairly well-placed in the college football universe.

?Oh, I?ll talk baseball any time,? Henderson will tell you. ?I love it.?

He?ll also confess to his admiration of that fella for whom the month we?re about to enter was so special.

?Reggie Jackson was my guy,? said Henderson. ?It was the demeanor. He always had the confidence. Reggie was a little outspoken, yeah. He walked with that swagger. He was labeled as ?Mr. October,? and he had to live with that. You?re ?Mr. October.? You go up against Billy Martin all the time. Who?s going to in? Yeah, he was my guy.?

Funny, but Jackson played for four of the teams still alive in the AL ? in order, the Athletics, Orioles, Yankees and Angels. So, his fingerprints, even if they've long since faded, might still be on this pennant race, if only poetically.

And so, who knows? Maybe that has made Henderson even more invested. Subliminally, if nothing else.

No sign of remains in new Mich. search for Hoffa

Authorities plan to take soil samples from under the driveway. (AP) ? Authorities drilled through concrete and removed two samples of wet soil and clay in a modest Detroit-area neighborhood Friday in the latest effort to find the remains of Teamsters boss Jimmy Hoffa, who disappeared in 1975.

There was no visible sign of human remains, but test results could be ready by Monday, Roseville Police Chief James Berlin said.

"We're not sure if anything is down there. That's what this is all about," Berlin said.

They drilled the concrete floor of a shed adjacent to a driveway where a recent radar test revealed a shift in the soil. The latest investigation was launched after a man told police that he saw a body being buried under the driveway 35 years ago and "thinks it may have been Jimmy."

Authorities have already said they don't think the timeline adds up and that it's unlikely Hoffa's body is there. He was last seen July 30, 1975, outside a restaurant in Oakland County, more than 30 miles to the west.

"I don't believe it's Mr. Hoffa. I don't know what it is," said Berlin, who was contacted last month by the man who said he witnessed a body being buried there. "We received credible information that a crime may have occurred. We're not doing anything we wouldn't have done on any other case.

"That shed did not exist at the time this allegedly occurred. The prior outbuilding that was there did not have a concrete floor."

The homeowner, Patricia Szpunar, 72, has lived there since 1988. She said her son uses the 12-by-12 shed to store two workbenches and his motorcycle. Police detectives appeared two weeks ago and said they may need to search her yard for a dead body.

"I laughed at them," Szpunar said Friday. "I looked at them and said, 'What? Do you think Jimmy Hoffa is buried in my backyard?' ... They just looked at me, and asked why I said Jimmy Hoffa."

Berlin said the brick, ranch-style home may have been owned in the 1970s by a gambler with ties to organized crime.

Hoffa was an acquaintance of mobsters and adversary to federal officials. He spent time in prison for jury tampering. The day he disappeared, Hoffa was supposed to meet with a New Jersey Teamsters boss and a Detroit mafia captain.

He was declared legally dead in 1982. Previous tips led police to excavate soil in 2006 at a horse farm more than 100 miles north of Detroit, rip up floorboards at a Detroit home in 2004 and search beneath a backyard pool north of the city in 2003.

There were even rumors that Hoffa's remains were ground up and tossed into a Florida swamp, entombed beneath Giants Stadium in New Jersey or obliterated in a mob-owned fat-rendering plant.

On Friday, about 150 people filled the street near Szpunar's home as state Department of Environmental Quality workers drilled for samples.

"I want to see if they are going to find something," said 25-year-old Heather Strohscherin, who lives two blocks over and doubts the site is Hoffa's final resting place.

"It is a good spot," she said. "Who would guess in the backyard in a Roseville neighborhood?"

Berlin said the site will be treated as a crime scene until at least Monday, pending results of the soil tests.

As for the homeowner's knowledge about Hoffa's disappearance?

"Sure, I read about it in the paper. I've listened to it on TV," Szpunar said. "But not because I'm that interested in it. It was just because it was current news."
