Column: Balotelli challenging minds with his feet

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) ? The ignoramus who scrawled "non sei un vero italiano, sei un africano nero" ? "You are not a true Italian, you are a black African" ? on a wall near the San Siro stadium in Milan. Did he, despite himself, leap off his sofa in delight when Mario Balotelli thumped home his goal for Italy with a powerful nod of his shaven black head and put their country into the final of Europe's top soccer tournament?

One hopes so.

And the hooligans in Rome who hurled a bunch of bananas into a bar where Balotelli and other young Italy players were relaxing a few summers back, prompting the owner to call the police. Did they, despite themselves, yell with joy as Balotelli celebrated his second goal against Germany in the semifinal, tearing off his blue Italy jersey to proudly show off his black torso of muscles and sinews ridged like thick rope?

Again, one hopes so.

And the idiots ? here at the Euros and back in Italy ? who have booed and howled like apes at Balotelli because he is black. Did they, despite themselves, feel twinges of shame, and were they moved when his adoptive mother cradled her boy in a long, tight hug after the game of his life, her white hand lovingly stroking the back of his neck and his Mohican-style strip of dyed-blonde hair?

Please, yes, one truly hopes so.

One of the great virtues of sport has always been that it creates heroes who change the way people think or expose those who refuse to. With their exploits, their activism or both, Muhammad Ali, Billie Jean King, amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius, Aborigine Olympic champion Cathy Freeman and other sports pioneers too numerous to name have rubbed the noses of bigots, sexists, homophobes and the otherwise small-minded in the dirt of their own ugliness, silencing some of them and enlightening others.

Balotelli, with his brilliance on the field and his dignity and good humor off it, is now doing that, too, by shining like no one else at the European Championship that has focused attention on the racism that still blights the continent's favorite sport, and which climaxes Sunday with the final between Italy and Spain.

The role is not one Balotelli has lobbied for, wholeheartedly embraced or even is naturally suited for. For starters, he's young, just 21. Before this tournament, where he has impressed with his cool and earnestness, he often made news more for his immaturity than with his play. Notable examples were when he tossed a dart in the direction of another player at Manchester City, his club in England, or when two fire trucks were called last October to his home south of Manchester to douse a blaze he said was caused by friends setting off fireworks in his bathroom.

Before these Euros, France Football magazine asked Balotelli about the thrown bananas in Rome in 2009. His response showed how deeply he's been hurt by the abuse he's endured since he first made his mark on soccer at Inter Milan but also perhaps suggested he remains vulnerable to hot-tempered excesses and still has some growing up to do.

"I hope it doesn't happen again," he said. "If someone throws bananas at me in the street, I will go to prison because I will kill them."

Balotelli's life story is complicated, through no fault of his own. He was born in Sicily, to parents who emigrated there from Ghana. He was gravely ill as a baby, with a malformation of the intestine that required repeated surgeries, and spent months in the hospital.

"I've had a lot of luck," he told France Football of that period of his life. "We are all destructible. But me, I'm difficult to destroy."

When he was 2? years old, a court ? acting upon a petition from social services ? assigned Mario to a foster family. Silvia and Franco Balotelli and their children ? Corrado, Giovanni and sister Cristina, all much older than him ? "looked after little Mario with all the love of a parent, brother or sister," his website says. When he turned 18, Mario formally applied to become the Balotellis' adopted son, according to his sister.

He told France Football he does sometimes speak to his birth parents. Tournament organizers UEFA said before Euro 2012 he would have their name, Barwuah, on his Italy shirt, along with Balotelli. But, for reasons unclear, that hasn't happened.

Immigration is a relatively new phenomenon in Italy, which has struggled to accept and adapt to some of the changes brought by people from Africa, South America, Asia and Eastern Europe who came to do jobs that affluent Italians now reject ? like picking crops, laying bricks or caring for the elderly. Tens of thousands of kids, like Balotelli, who were born there of non-Italian parents must wait until they are 18 before they can claim citizenship. That, essentially, gives the impression they are second-class Italians, and it riled Balotelli.

"I'm very attached to my Italian passport. I should have gotten it straight away and not waited for my 18th birthday," he told France Football.

But Balotelli's exploits in soccer, a sport that ignites passions and admiration like no other in Italy, have fueled appeals for change, including from Giorgio Napolitano, the country's president. Receiving the Italy squad last November, he called immigrants "the lifeblood for our country" and said their Italy-born children "feel completely Italian and they should be given citizenship as soon as possible."

That moved Balotelli to tears. "It touched me. That's my story," he said.

Again on Saturday, the eve of the final, the speaker of Parliament's lower Chamber of Deputies, center-right leader Gianfranco Fini, appealed for reform, invoking Balotelli's example in calling the children of immigrants "not a problem but a resource."

But Premier Mario Monti is entirely focused on salvaging Italy's stricken economy and says the citizenship question is a political issue that is not in the remit of his government to solve. Previous calls also got nowhere, hitting a wall of opposition from the anti-immigrant Northern League party that helped keep Monti's predecessor, Silvio Berlusconi, in power.

Still, Balotelli's performances are focusing minds against racial intolerance. UEFA has fined Spain and Croatia a total of $125,000 after their fans chanted abuse and monkey noises at him at these Euros.

Italy's leading sports newspaper, La Gazzetta dello Sport, also apologized after some readers protested about a cartoon that depicted Balotelli as King Kong. Even a Northern League lawmaker, Mario Borghezio, on Saturday hailed Balotelli as a northern Italian "with dark skin. And that's absolutely fine with me."

"Whether the racists like it or not, the joy that exploded the other night in the piazzas for the fantastic goals of our black son swept away, for a magic moment, decades of stereotypes," Gian Antonio Stella, who chronicles Italian society, wrote in the daily Corriere della Sera, under the front-page headline, "Mario and the pride of the new Italians."

Balotelli has not spoken at these Euros about the racism he has faced. But the image of him clenching his muscles like a bodybuilder, black and beautiful for all to see, after his second goal sank Germany seemed to speak volumes. The referee, as soccer's rules demand, showed Balotelli a yellow card for going shirtless, but he was unapologetic.

"If anyone is angry for my celebration, it's because they saw my physique and they're jealous," he said.

With another goal Sunday, Balotelli would become the top scorer of Euro 2012. His sister is flying to Kiev to join the rest of the Balotelli family. The eyes of the world will be on him ? challenging and hopefully sweeping away ignorance with his feats and feet.

Rare mussels almost 'wiped out'

The largest population in English waters of an endangered species of mollusc has almost been destroyed.

Insect charity Buglife has called for an inquiry after the death of up to 90% of the freshwater pearl mussels at the Ennerdale Water Reservoir in Cumbria.

It is thought that water levels in the outflow of the reservoir fell, causing the temperature to go up and oxygen levels to go down.

"This is devastating news," said Buglife chief executive Matt Shardlow.

Meet the mussel:

  • The freshwater pearl mussel is a type of mollusc, of which there are around 85,000 recognised extant species
  • The freshwater pearl mussel can grow up to 15cm long
  • Their larvae resemble tiny mussels with hinged shells that snap shut when they find a suitable juvenile fish to attach themselves to
  • It is thought that the freshwater pearl mussel may once have been the most numerous bivalve mollusc in the world
  • In bivalve molluscs, the gills both "breathe" and produce a water flow through the animal, which is used for both reproduction and excretion

About 80,000 freshwater mussels were lost in this single instance, out of an estimated total population in England and Scotland of about 12m, according to Buglife.

Mr Shardlow compared the loss to wiping out a medium-sized city in the UK, in human terms.

The species is protected under UK and international legislation.

"The UK supports a large proportion of the world population for this species and we have an international responsibility to protect these animals," said Matt Shardlow.

The freshwater pearl mussel recently joined giant pandas and Javan rhinos in a list of the world's 365 "most endangered species", assembled by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) last year.

The species is thought to be one of the longest-living invertebrates in existence ,with individuals surviving for up to 150 years.

"The bloated corpses of animals born when Charles Darwin was alive have been floating out of their beds and (are) being swept into the Irish Sea," said Matt Shardlow.

The mussels take 10-12 years to reach sexual maturity, meaning that it takes time to build up numbers.

"If you get to the point where the river is just uninhabitable, you cause 150 years' worth of damage, and that's what's happened in this instance," said Matt Shardlow.

Matt Shardlow said the pearl mussel had been in "relatively steep decline", in recent years, partly because of poaching and illegal pearl fishing.

But he said it was exacerbated by the mussel's complicated life cycle.

"The larvae come out and they attach to the gills of salmon and trout and live there for a while," said Matt Shardlow.

"They then drop off and they live in gravel in the riverbed and then gradually grow into the big mussels that one recognises as pearl mussels."

It means that changes to fish populations or silt and soil being washed into the river system have negative effects on the species.

Pollutants from agriculture have also affected the species.

"On top of that they've got issues to do with water flow and oxygen availability, which is obviously the problem that they've had here," said Matt Shardlow.

"We must understand the cause of this disaster so that it never happens again," he said.

(AP) ? Brazil is making progress in its preparations for the 2014 World Cup, FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke said Thursday at the end of a three-day visit.

Valcke visited the host cities of Recife, Natal and Brasilia and met with local organizers to get updates on progress for the World Cup and next year's Confederations Cup.

"Most of the projects are going well," Valcke said. "Everybody is working harder and we are becoming better prepared to host the Confederations Cup and the World Cup."

FIFA also announced that the World Cup draw will take place in the northeastern resort city of Costa do Sauipe in December 2013. The Confederations Cup draw will be in Sao Paulo this December.

Valcke noted improvements in the northeastern cities of Natal and Recife and praised the work being done in the capital Brasilia, which will host the Confederations Cup opener in 2013.

Valcke said Natal was an example of Brazil's progress. The city that will host four World Cup matches had been one of the slowest in its preparations so far.

"There's no time to lose and the work really needs to be done fast. That said, I was very impressed with what's being done," he said. "The good thing about the project is that it's moving on. We had the red light before, but now we've got the right color again and the projects are on schedule. So there are no concerns on our part, though we will continue to monitor the situation."

Valcke said it was still too early to tell if the northeastern city of Recife will be able to host the Confederations Cup next year but was confident that it will be ready. He said he got guarantees from the local government that all the work will be completed in time for the World Cup warm up tournament.

Recife and Salvador will have until November to show FIFA that they will be in position to host the Confederations Cup.

The four cities already guaranteed to host the tournament are Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro, Fortaleza and Belo Horizonte. The final will be at Maracana in Rio.

Valcke praised the stadium being built in Brasilia for the competition's opener.

"It will be a worthy arena to represent the nation's capital," he said.

Valcke acknowledged that the World Cup law approved by the Brazilian congress and sanctioned by President Dilma Rousseff was not exactly what FIFA wanted because it left the governing body having to negotiate some of its needed guarantees with the local governments, but said that it "was not the end of the world."

Soccer's governing body also said it reached a deal with official broadcaster TV Globo to allow the World Cup matches to be shown on big screens across the country without the need for a licensing agreement as long as the exhibitions are for less than 5,000 people and in a non-commercial environment.

"It is nice to think that thousands of kids will experience the same feeling that I had when I was a kid during the celebrations that will take place at public viewing events across Brazil," said former Brazil striker Ronaldo, a member of the local organizing committee.

Brazil will be hosting the World Cup for the first time since 1950.

Healthcare Reform effects on Washington residents

KENNEWICK, Wash. -- Starting January 1, 2014, The Affordable Healthcare Act will require everyone in the country to have health insurance. Since not everyone can afford to do that, each state has to work out a plan to make it happen.

Washington, unlike many states in the country, has been preparing for several years, and is actually ahead of the curve. "It's not an easy undertaking, but we're well on our way. we're number two in the country, in terms of being give the grant to move forward. so we'll be open for business when we need to be. To the other states I think they're going to struggle," says Governor Chris Gregoire in Thursday conference.

Gregoire laid some major changes coming to the state. "We expect about 500,000 people living in poverty today will be eligible for the medicaid program."

There are currently 1.2 million people in Washington covered by Medicaid. But that number is going to grow, Jim Stevenson with the Department of Health and Human Services says he anticipates 350,000 new people will be eligible to qualify for Medicaid, and 150,000 people already eligible will sign up. Rules have changed so that Medicaid will cover those without dependents or disabilities whose incomes are up to 138% of the federal poverty level, currently $23,050 for a family of four.

"The Federal government is stepping up in a way they've never done before, providing 100% coverage for the Medicaid eligible for the first few years. 95 percent shortly there after, and 90 percent forever," said Gregoire.

For the other estimated 300,000 uninsured people who make too much money for Medicaid, they'll use the Insurance Benefit Exchange. It's for people whose incomes fall between 139-400% above the poverty line. A family of four earning up to $92,200 would be eligible to get private insurance with the help of federal subsidies on a sliding scale.

33,000 Washington residents currently on the state's Basic Health Program will be rolled into the Medicaid plan.

The Director of Communication, for the Washington State Health Benefit Exchange, Dave Marchand says we are ahead of the curve, because we were the second state in the union to implement the Exchange and a boar, by passing this legislation back in May 2011.

Since then, we have already received $150 million dollars to implement the Exchange and put it to work.

"Health Benefit Exchange is a market place online that provides affordable, accessible, health insurance options, for the hundreds of thousands of individuals and small businesses in our state looking for insurance. Its really what one would term as the Expedia or Travelocity of insurance," explained Marchand in simple terms.

Frisco Mayor Helps Douse House Fire

The mayor of Frisco has one sure vote if he chooses to run for re-election.

Mayor Maher Maso was driving home from a charity event when he spotted smoke.

"As I'm driving up Custer Road, I saw a little smoke, which quickly turned into a lot of smoke and caught my attention," he said.

As he got closer to the home along Custer Trail, he saw flames shooting from the back of the house.

Maso called 911 and walked up to the home, where he saw an older couple and their granddaughter watching television.

"When I saw through the glass of the front door, there was people in there," he said. "I knocked pretty hard -- probably scared the living daylights out of the couple."

Maso convinced the couple to get out of the house, even though they didn't recognize the Frisco mayor.

And Maso -- still in his coat and tie -- didn't wait for firefighters.

"I wanted to see if they had a hose, and there was a hose there," he said. "I just connected it up and poured some water on the fire. It was really that simple."

The fire was out by the time firefighters arrived, and damage was contained to the outside of the house.

Maso is reluctant to say he saved three lives, but he's pretty confident he earned at least two votes in the next election.

"After, we were talking, and then he says, 'You know, I'm glad I voted for you.' He goes, 'Next time, I'll vote twice for you,'" Maso said with a laugh.

According to a report in the Dallas Morning News, pool equipment had caught fire near Bob Pollock's garage. Later, investigators said squirrels may have chewed through insulation, exposing wires, the paper reported.

NBC 5's Ellen Goldberg contributed to this report.

India s Oil exploration spends under NELP rises 96% in 2006 11

Last Updated : 28 June 2012 at 16:50 IST Source :Commodity Online

NEW DELHI (Commodity Online): India?s Oil exploration spending under New Exploration and Licensing Policy (NELP) I-VIII has risen 96% from 2006-2011, according to Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

According to Oil Ministry data, US 1168.53 mn was spent in 2006-07 while in 2010-11, it has risen to US$ 2293.93 mn.

The Ministry termed as ?factually inaccurate? reports in the media that there has been a drastic drop in exploration spending in NELP blocks from US $ bn in 2007 to US$4.7 mn in 2011.

NELP-IX has been awarded recently and committed investment in the awarded blocks is about US$582.29 million. Investment level will increase with further development of discoveries.

The Ministry clarified that: The timelines are specified in the respective Production Sharing Contracts (PSCs) for various stages from exploration, discovery to development under New Exploration Licensing Policy (NELP). As per PSC, Contractor takes about 7 years for exploration. The development of offshore discoveries in shallow water takes about 4 to 5 years, while in deepwater the average time taken for development of discoveries may be about 9 to 10 years. The Contractor is required to adhere to the timelines specified in PSC and hence there exists a certain time gap, especially in case of development of offshore and deepwater discoveries, from discovery to development.

Several other factors, such as geographical location, geological and reservoir parameters, Contractor?s development strategy and business model, availability of infrastructure, prevailing prices of oil and gas etc. influence the timeline for development of oil/gas discoveries. Consequently, expenditure is incurred by the Contractor, keeping in view the various stages as outlined above, the clarification added.

Asian markets, euro jump on eurozone deal

Asian markets and the euro surged Friday after eurozone leaders struck a surprise deal to allow the bloc's bailout fund to directly support struggling banks and pledged $150 billion to boost growth.

The euro was up almost 1.2 percent after the agreement, which will allow emergency aid to crisis-hit Italy and Spain, was announced following marathon talks at an EU summit to save the ailing single currency.

Regional bourses, which had expected little from the summit, surged on the news, with Tokyo ending 1.50 percent, or 132.67 points, higher at 9,006.78, and Hong Kong closing 2.19 percent, or 416.19 points, up at 19,441.46.

Seoul finished up 1.91 percent, or 34.83 points, at 1,854.01, while Sydney ended up 1.23 percent, or 49.8 points, at 4,094.6. Shanghai closed 1.35 percent, or 29.59 points, higher at 2,225.43.

The accord struck in Brussels paves the way for the eurozone's 500-billion-euro ($630 billion) bailout fund to recapitalise ailing banks directly, without passing through national budgets and adding to struggling countries' debt mountains.

But this would occur only after a Europe-wide banking supervisory body is set up, with leaders aiming for that to happen at the end of the year.

It was also agreed the bailout funds would be used "in a flexible and efficient manner in order to stabilise markets", a reference to buying countries' bonds to drive down high borrowing costs that have crippled Spain and Italy.

EU president Herman Van Rompuy hailed the deal as a "real breakthrough" that would calm financial markets and reshape the eurozone to prevent a recurrence of the debt crisis.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel appeared to have dropped her insistence on recapitalisation funds to banks being channelled through governments.

EU leaders also agreed a package of measures worth some 120 billion euros they hope will bolster growth in the recession-hit bloc.

In a shock move, Italy and Spain had earlier threatened to block the "growth pact" unless they won concessions on short-term moves to help their economies.

But the head of the eurogroup finance ministers, Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker, said early Friday that the two countries had dropped their resistance in return for measures to stabilise their economies.

Investors had low expectations from the summit, just one of many attempts to resolve the long-running euro debt crisis, and the deal took Asian markets by surprise.

But analysts warned against overoptimism.

"It is a bit of relief, but it is not a game changer," Wee-Khoon Chong, Asia rates strategist at Societe Generale in Hong Kong, told Dow Jones Newswires. "The market is quite thin and it might have overreacted."

Markets had earlier edged higher after a decline on Wall Street.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 0.20 percent, or 24.75 points, at 12,602.26 on Thursday, after having been off by more than 170 points during the session.

The recovery from early losses in the last hour of New York trade came amid short covering and hopes that EU leaders would agree measures to stem the crisis.

On currency markets in early European trade, the euro was at $1.2583 from $1.2449 in morning Tokyo trade, while it also rose against the Japanese currency to 99.92 yen from 98.60 earlier Friday.

Oil surged on the eurozone deal. New York's main contract, light sweet crude for delivery in August rose $1.66 to $79.35 a barrel and Brent North Sea crude for August delivery gained $1.28 cents to $92.64.

Gold was at $1,579.62 an ounce at 1110 GMT, compared with $1,569.79 an ounce late Thursday.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean faster, better voice search

11 hrs.

Google has announced Jelly Bean, the next version of the Android operating system, at its?I/O conference in San Francisco.?The software, also known as Android 4.1,?is faster and introduces a number of useful new functions: offline voice, more powerful notifications, and a predictive search that gives you answers before you ask.

After a short preamble in which Google's?Hugo Barra announced that the company was activating a million devices a day, they began going over the major features being added to the OS. Here they are in convenient bullet form:

  • "Project Butter" is the internal name for the effort to make Android more responsive. Laggy controls and delay in apps launching have been common complaints. The team did all kinds of optimizations and made a new tool that ramps up the CPU when it detects you're doing something on-screen. Using a high-speed camera, they recorded the difference between the old and new systems, and it's striking.
  • The camera has a new interface, and lets you get over to your latest shots super-easily. And deleting photos is quick ? you just slide them up and off the screen. Looks really easy to do.
  • The homescreen is more elastic, allowing for nice resizable widgets that automatically reorganize the screen around them. A custom home screen is something Android and Windows Phone have been pushing hard?and which iOS conspicuously lacks.
  • NFC, the short-range wireless Google has been hyping (and which is rumored to be on the next iPhone as well), can now be used to share media or to sync up accessories quickly and easily.
  • Notifications have become very rich: icons, contact photos, more content, and some now actually can expand to show more info. If you miss a call, you can call back or send a text right from the notification, or if a new song comes on, you can favorite or skip it.
  • Voice recognition has been moved offline, which is a very significant development. With or without a connection, you can dictate your emails or search terms. Right now it's only available in English, but they're rolling out more languages soon.
  • A new Siri-like voice search gives rich search results quickly, with map snippets, media, and Knowledge graph data. "Show me pictures of pygmy marmosets," for example:
  • Google Now, a predictive search engine, that (if you let it, they were careful to point out) uses your search history and location to determine what you might search for, and provides that preemptively. Drive to work every day around 8:30? Google automatically gives you traffic and route data. Take the train? It pre-loads train arrival times and other stuff. Getting on a plane? If you've searched for that flight, it'll track the flight in real time and advise you of gate changes and so on.
  • It'll also tell you about games and teams you're watching. On a slightly creepy note, the presenter explained: "You don't need to set up your favorite teams. You've already done that." By searching, naturally.
  • Maps has gotten a medium-size update, with a cool new "Compass mode" that lets you navigate street view by looking around with your phone in hand. And you can now download maps for offline use by city and neighborhood instead of just in square chunks.
  • A few more minor features: App updates are more efficient, only delivering the part that needs updating. The OS is now more friendly to blind users, who can use voice and braille to navigate. Media format input and output has been improved (multichannel audio, better codec detection).

Overall it's quite a significant update, and should be arriving to the Nexus series of phones starting in mid-July. When will other phones get it? Hard to say, but Google noted that they've started a new program with hardware manufacturers that should let them make the latest version of Android available more quickly on their devices. So it may not be for a little while yet, especially?considering how?many devices have yet to upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich, the last version.?Hopefully the wait will be shorter than it has been before.

You can see a few of the features in action in this video showing off the new Nexus 7 tablet.

More?information and further discussion of the new features can be found at Google's Jelly Bean key features page.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama told lawmakers at an annual White House congressional picnic Wednesday that despite their differences they should keep in mind that they are first Americans working toward a better future for the country.

Lawmakers of both parties gathered at the White House's South Lawn one day before two partisan conflicts came to a head ? a Supreme Court decision on Obama's signature health care law and a contempt of Congress vote in the House against Attorney General Eric Holder.

"We're thrilled that you have at least one day where you got a chance to be together in Washington and nobody is arguing," Obama said.

Under sunny skies, legislators, their spouses and children mingled with White House aides among tents and scores of picnic tables. A Marine Corp band played country and western tunes.

Holder was in the crowd, pausing to chat briefly with Republican Rep. Peter King of New York. House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, was scheduled to attend, his office said.

Obama, dressed in casual slacks and shirt, joined the crowd with first lady Michelle Obama at his side to a few cries of "Four more years."

"For all the political differences that are sometimes expressed in this town, we are first and foremost Americans -- not Democrats or Republicans," Obama said. "And I think all of us want to make sure that during extraordinarily challenging times for this country that we constantly keep that in mind. That's what the people who sent us here are expecting.

"And I know that each of us in our own way are hopeful that because of the work that we do here we pass on something a little better and a little brighter to our kids and our grandkids."

Will I Have To Pay A Consultation Fee? | REALTOR.com? Blogs

questions

Q: Is there a fee to put a my house on the market through a Realtor?
?Sissy, Odessa, TX

A: It depends each office is different. A lot of bigger companies will offer a start up fee. Just interview a bunch of different companies and see which ones do it for free for you.
Matt Laricy is a Realtor? with Americorp Real Estate in Chicago, IL.

A: Usually not, the Realtors are paid at closing from the seller?s proceeds per the terms of the listing agreement. In California, real estate agents cannot charge up front fees except in very limited circumstances.
Teri Andrews Murch is a Realtor? with Lyon Real Estate in Auburn, CA.

A: No. You should be able to hear all the services an agent can offer you, including a valuation of your home, without paying. If an agent tries to charge you for that, call someone else. Once you sign a listing agreement with the realtor, the agent?s broker and agent will not receive compensation until your home is sold. Unless the agent has retained a fee of some sort (i.e., for marketing purposes). if your house does not sell, the agent and her broker will not be paid. It is possible for a Realtor to lose money trying to sell a house that does not sell.
Vilma Colon-Oliver is a Realtor? with Meybohm Realtors ? Augusta in Evans, GA.

A: Be prepared to pay a Realtor 6% of the selling price to market and sell your home. Your Realtor will usually split this 50/50 with the Buyers agent (The agent that brings the buyer for your home). Your Agent will also have to split a part of his share with his Broker for office overhead and other expenses.

So for instance if you sold your home for $100K the real estate commission would be $6000. Seller?s closing costs can run as high as 3% of the sale price so deduct another $3000. and your total cost would be approximately $900.
Lee Dworshak is a Realtor? with Keller Williams LA Harbor Realty in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA.

A: While not unheard of, it is not typical for Realtors to charge fees up front for marketing a house. Most Realtors are paid a commission based on a percentage of the selling price and are paid at closing. Keep in mind, though, that fees paid for selling your home are always negotiable, both in the amount you pay and when you pay it.
Phil Lunnon is a Realtor? with Lunnon Realty in Lakewood, CO.

On the Road Again?Pet Safety Tips ? Dr. Patrick Mahaney

Photo of The Improper and Unsafe Way of Transporting One's PetNow that you?ve read The Summertime Pet Safety Series parts I (The Dog Days of Summer) and II (Summertime Festive Food Safety), let?s move onto the final topic of pet-safe car travel.

Summertime presents abundant opportunities to get outside; far more than permitted during winter?s chilly months. Sunny skies and balmy weather motivate plans for adventurous road trips, oftentimes with our pets. When planning your trip, pet-safe transport should be a top priority if you?re taking Fido or Fluffy along for the ride! Needless to say, I don?t advocate the means of transport as exemplified in this article?s photo.

Clinical Signs of Travel Stress

Whether it?s obvious or subtle, any type of travel (plane, train, or automobile) puts stress on your pet. Obvious signs of travel related stress include:

Vocalizing
Pacing and restlessness
Panting
Salivating (ptyalism)
Inappropriate urination or defecation
Vomiting (emesis)
Diarrhea
Food refusal

Subtle signs of travel associated stress are:

Withdrawal from interaction with other pets and people (hiding)
Body position changes (crouching, dropped tail, etc)

If your pet reacts negatively to car travel then a road trip is probably not the best option. Stress negatively impacts multiple body systems due to the release of steroid hormones (cortisol, etc) and other stimulating substances (epinephrine, etc). Excess steroid hormones hinder the immune system?s ability to fight infection and manage inflammation (arthritis, etc), while epinephrine (adrenaline) elevates heart rate and blood pressure. In this scenario, leaving your dog or cat with a trusted caretaker is healthier than subjecting them to the potential negative health implications associated with travel.

Should You Sedate Your Pet?

Veterinary prescribed sedatives (Acepromazine, Alprazolam, etc), over the counter medications (Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride= Benadryl) and natural products (Rescue Remedy Pet, Spirit Essences, etc) can help take off the stressful edge associated with travel. Consult your veterinarian about the appropriate use of such products for your pet. Before your trip, participate in a trial run with the chosen product to gauge your pet?s response. Typically, a tired pet is more prone to sleep during travel, so try to provide vigorous exercise within the 24 hours prior to your departure.

Food or No Food?

If your canine or feline companion is prone to motion sickness, withhold food and large volumes of water before departure. Skipping a meal is less harmful on a pet?s body than the esophageal and oral irritation caused by the eruption of acidic stomach contents and the potential for aspiration (inhalation of food or liquids).

Proper Pet Restraint

If your pets are natural born adventurers or have been acclimated to traveling, then bring them along for the ride. Ensuring safe car travel for the driver and passengers (both human and animal) by using a restraining device is essential. Without the appropriate restraint, your pet is free to wander the car?s cabin causing a significant driving distraction and subjecting them to trauma from an accident. Even a minor fender bender can cause life threatening injuries when a pet is suddenly thrust forward or out of a window.

The best options for restraint are a seat belt harness or a rigid carrier. Medium to large dogs are typically more suitable candidates for a seat belt harness, which provides confinement to the seat?s boundaries. Smaller dogs and cats should travel in a carrier, which should be strapped or hooked down.

Climate Control and Human Observation

Unlike humans, dogs and cats lack the ability to efficiently expel heat through their skin. The respiratory tract is their primary means of excreting heat, which is why you may notice an increased respiratory rate or pant in warm weather.

A Stanford University Medical Center study published in Pediatrics reports that a ?car?s interior can heat up by an average of 40 degrees F within an hour, regardless of ambient temperature. Eighty percent of the temperature rise occurred within the first half-hour?. As your car?s interior temperature increases, so will your dog or cat?s body temperature. A dangerously high level (hyperthermia) can occur after only a short time and can cause your pet to suffer the severe effects of heat related illness, including collapse, abnormal blood clotting, multi-organ system failure, seizures and death.

Unforeseeable circumstances may keep you occupied longer than initially anticipated, so never leave your pet unattended in a non-climate controlled car, even on a relatively cool day. Additionally, provide continuous circulating ventilation with air conditioning during your trip.

Frequent stops can help to reduce stress by providing your pet with a change of scenery and the opportunity to hydrate, urinate and defecate. As the chosen break site will be unfamiliar and holds the potential for a variety of unknown dangers, always use a leash.

These pet-safe travel tips have year-round applications, so use them during winter, spring, summer, and fall. Happy Travels!

Sergey Brin demos Project Glass on stage at Google IO

It's hard to ignore Google's X Lab-born Project Glass. News of the slim-lined, scifi goggles' existence first surfaced this past February and it wasn't long after that Mountain View's own elite began to flaunt the heads-up display in public. While little of the device's true purpose and functionality is known, we have been privy to certain features over the past few months, like photo sharing to Google+ and even its ability to overlay Maps. Though product lead Steve Lee shrugged off rumors of a late 2012 launch, it does appear the company's itching to spill a few more (jelly) beans at today's I/O conference.

To do that, Sergey Brin rushed onstage at Google I/O wearing the glass units to give us a brief live action demo courtesy of a skydive over San Francisco. Video of the jump, performed by four divers in a blimp, was streamed live through Google Hangouts to attendees at the Moscone Center. In keeping with the extreme vibe of this demonstration, the showcase was handed off to bikers on the rooftop, also outfitted with the lenses, who jumped from building to building via ramp and then eventually cycled into the arena and right up to Sergey, himself. As a finishing touch, Brin also snapped a shot of the team using his own headset. All told, it's a pretty incredible way to once again officially tease this forward-looking tech.

Google: 400 million Android devices, one million activations a day

Google has just kicked off its I/O keynote with some big new numbers to share. It now says there are 400 million activated Android devices out there, and one million activations per day. That's up from the 100 million activated devices it announced at Google I/O last year, and 200 million it announced last fall, while the activations per day are up from the 900k it confirmed just earlier this month. As Google was quick to point out, that translates to about 12 devices activated every second, and it's happy to note that things are "definitely not slowing down."
