CV dos and don?ts ? how to write a CV that will grab employers? attention

In the current competitive job market a well written curriculum vitae will make the difference between whether or not you?re considered for a job. As someone who?s written hundreds of drafts and spent countless hours tweaking mine over the last few months, I?m sharing what I think are the main points to remember when writing an attention-grabbing CV:

1) Make it look good!

A surprisingly high number of CVs are submitted without the format and look of the document being properly considered. Your CV is likely to be one of many and any that aren?t well presented will be instantly discarded ? you need to show employers you?ve made an effort and are interested in the job.

If you?re a student you can go to your university or college career?s centre for advice on this, or if you are a Microsoft Word user there are templates to download to use as a guide. And it should go without saying, but check the spelling ? mistakes like this will be a big deterrent to prospective employers, even if you have the right experience for the role.

2) Think about the structure

There is no perfect structure for a CV, it will differ according to the role and industry, but there are several areas that should always be included:

  • Contact details ? your name, address, email and if relevant to the role any social media pages (i.e. Twitter) you?re happy to share details of.

  • Career history ? ordered from most recent first and for each role include a short synopsis on your role, responsibilities skills and any promotions.

  • Reasons for a career change or a gap in your career history, and what you perceived the benefit of this time to be, i.e. voluntary work or retraining could make you stand out from other candidates and highlight your passion for a sector.

  • Make it concise, preferably no more than two sides of A4. This shows a prospective employer you are able to determine what is relevant information and it makes it digestible ? you want this to be an interesting document which highlights your strengths and achievements, not something that is long-winded as you can go into more detail at your interview.

3) Tailor it

Your CV should be tweaked for every role you apply for ? this might be a time consuming process but it is important to show you?ve responded to the job description. Do you need to highlight your team work skills, ability to multitask or management skills? Research the company, who are the clients you could be working with and what is your experience in these sectors? And do you have any relevant hobbies or interests that could be referenced?

4) Tell the truth!

If you falsify anything on your CV you could run the risk of being unable to evidence your claims in an interview, or, being unable to adequately deliver the job. If you?re struggling to match your experience to a job description this probably means it isn?t right role, it is much better to be positive and confident about your experience and skills, and you can always send your CV to an HR department asking to be considered for a future position at your level.

5) Send a cover letter

A cover letter should be included with every job application and should summarise your experience, why you think you?re right for the job and why you?d like to work for the company. Again, this should be tailored for each application and do a triple check before you hit send, is it correctly formatted throughout, have you properly addressed the employer, and is it spelt right?
