Nancy Cartwrights Philosophy of Science | Amazon Kindle Book Reviews

2 of 4 people found the following review helpful:

Excellent introductory chapter with overview of Cartwright?s works in philosophy of science and economics. A collection of papers from a workshop in Germany, the philosophy professors presenting the papers are from continental Europe, UK, Canada, and USA so there is a wider range of views than has been usual in philosophy. Cartwright gives a written response to each paper, which begins with a few sentence summary of the paper before presenting her views. Some papers disagree with her. One can learn a lot by reading only the introduction chapter plus her responses if you lack time to read the entire book. For me this book is well worth its high price.
Added note on April 7, 2011: The above review was written for the hardcover price of $136. I?m delighted a paperback version is now available at $39.95. Also I should have mentioned that the workshop in Germany was built in part on Nancy Cartwright?s 1999 book The Dappled World: A Study of the Boundaries of Science. From Cambridge University Press, her 1999 book argues that the nature of reality is such that science cannot pin down all of it into mathematical models and such. In 2008 Cartwright was elected president of the Philosophy of Science Association, founded in 1934.
