Google Chrome Will Integrate Voice And Video Chat Software WebRTC

By Jayce

June 22, Google recently launched open source voice and video chat software WebRTC. Google will integrate this software, which is similar to Skype, into Chrome browser.

WebRTC originated from Google?s acquisition of Internet telephony and video conferencing company Global IP Solutions (hereinafter referred to as ?GIPS?) in 2010. When after the WebRTC been integrated in Chrome browser, Gmail?s benefit is most obvious. Currently, Gmail has a voice and video chat feature, but users need to install the Google proprietary plug-ins. With Google?s VoIP business maturity, and the Gmail?s integration of Google voice, Gmail chat has become increasingly important.

However, Google has higher expectations of WebRTC. Google hopes WebRTC can become the standard of the Internet video conferencing and P2P communication, and develops the network communication protocols on this basis. Google said in the official blog, WebRTC will be open source, royalty-free, Google will also cooperate with Mozilla, Opera and other browser vendors about the WebRTC.

Google is an active supporter of web applications and cloud computing. Web applications can easily cross-operating system, not only for Windows and Mac OS X, can also be used by smart phones. Expected WebRTC will soon enter the Chrome browser.

A programmer of Google GIPS, Henrik Andreasson, said: ?Our goal is through simple Javascript Application Program Interface to make Chrome has a Real-Time Communication (RTC) capability. We are trying to make Chrome the full support of RTC from WebKit to voice and video communications. ?

WebRTC used GIPS? two voice codecs, including those for broadband connections iSAC and for narrowband connections iLBC. In video part, WebRTC used Google?s VP8 codec, which is also an open source, royalty-free technology.
