Man charged with baseball bat assault

CHINA GROVE ? A man who lives at the Miller Hotel on Main Street was arrested early Saturday after police say he hit another man in the head with a metal baseball bat.

Hank Matthew Harley, 42, of 119 N. Main St. Room 8, is charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

The man police say Harley assaulted, John Edward Coates of 4450 Miller Road in Salisbury, needed staples put in his head at Rowan Regional Medical Center, according to an arrest warrant.

China Grove police officers went to the hotel around 1:40 a.m. Saturday to investigate a disturbance. They found Coates there injured. He?d been struck in the left side of the head with a bat.

Rowan EMS workers treated Coates on the scene then took him to Rowan Regional for further treatment.

Officers found Harley walking nearby, a police report said. In addition to the assault charge, they found he was wanted on outstanding warrants for communicating threats, second-degree trespass and two counts of assault on a female.

Harley was in the Rowan County jail this morning under $10,000 bond.

Other arrests made recently the China Grove Police Department:

? Charles Lanny Graham Jr., of 1017 Lauren Glen Drive, was arrested June 7 in connection with a fight that happened May 14 at the China Grove Youth Baseball Field.

A police statement said Graham ?a youth coach, used abusive language that provoked retaliation and was directed toward children on the baseball fields and parents who were present. Graham and another individual present were involved in a disturbance and fight.?

Graham has been terminated as a coach with the league, police said.

? Ronald Crayton Stallings, of 10 Walnut Street, was arrested Saturday for failing to appear in court in May to face a drug charge, police said. During the arrest, officers discovered Stallings was listed as a fugitive by the N.C. Department of Correction.

He was charged with probation violation. Stallings was in the Rowan County jail this morning under $11,000 bond.
